Lord of Deception

Chapter 68: Chapter 68 – The Empire’s Messenger

The air in the grand hall remained thick with tension as Kael's declaration settled over his gathered allies. The weight of his words had sent a silent message—he would not bow, nor would he allow the Empire to dictate the future.

Footsteps echoed through the corridors, growing louder as a group of armored guards entered, escorting a lone figure draped in imperial robes. The envoy had arrived.

The man was tall and composed, his golden robes embroidered with the sigil of the Empire—a twin-headed eagle clutching a burning sword. His dark eyes scanned the hall before finally resting on Kael, who sat upon his throne like a predator waiting for its prey.

With a bow that was just shallow enough to be respectful but not servile, the envoy spoke. "Duke Kael Noctis, I bring greetings from the Imperial Council. I am Ambassador Aldric Varion, and I have come to deliver a message from His Majesty."

Kael studied Aldric with cold amusement, taking in every detail—the way his fingers twitched ever so slightly, the slight tension in his jaw. This man was nervous, though he hid it well. The Empire did not send envoys unless they wanted something, and Kael was eager to see what game they intended to play.

"Speak," Kael commanded, his voice smooth yet carrying an undeniable authority.

Aldric nodded. "The Empire has noted your… expansion." He carefully chose his words. "Your recent acquisitions of border territories have caused unease among the nobility. His Majesty wishes to remind you of your oaths of loyalty and requests your presence in the Imperial Capital to reaffirm your allegiance."

A silence followed.

Lilian, standing at Kael's side, let out a soft laugh, her emerald eyes gleaming with amusement. "How interesting," she mused. "A reminder of loyalty wrapped in a veiled threat. The Empire must be truly desperate to send an envoy rather than an army."

Aldric stiffened, but Kael merely smirked. "Tell me, Aldric, do you truly expect me to believe the Emperor is simply inviting me for a friendly discussion?" He leaned forward, resting his chin against his fingers. "Or is this a way for the Empire to keep me under its watchful eye?"

Aldric hesitated, but only for a fraction of a second. "The Empire seeks only stability, Your Grace. You have amassed great power, and while none question your right to rule, the Emperor wishes to ensure unity among the lords."

Selene Noctis, who had been silently watching from the shadows, chose this moment to step forward. The very presence of Kael's mother sent a chill through the room, and Aldric paled slightly at the sight of her.

"How bold," Selene murmured, her voice smooth as silk yet carrying an undeniable menace. "The Empire dares to summon my son as if he were a mere vassal? Perhaps they have forgotten that the House of Noctis does not kneel."

Aldric swallowed but held his composure. "With all due respect, Lady Noctis, this is not a demand—it is an opportunity."

Kael chuckled darkly. "Opportunity? For whom? The Empire?" He exhaled softly, eyes gleaming with ruthless calculation. "Tell your masters this: I will not come to the capital like some obedient hound. If they wish for an audience, they can step into my domain and speak to me on my terms."

Aldric stiffened, his carefully constructed facade beginning to crack. "Duke Noctis, refusing the Emperor's invitation may be seen as—"

"A declaration of independence?" Kael finished for him. "Is that what you're implying?"

Aldric faltered, realizing his words had been twisted against him. Kael stood, his imposing figure casting a long shadow over the envoy.

"I suggest you choose your next words carefully, Ambassador," Kael said, his voice now edged with danger. "Because right now, you are standing in my court, in my lands. You are not in the Imperial Palace. Here, your Emperor's authority means nothing."

The room tensed. Orvas and the guards had their hands on their weapons, and even Lilian's smile had turned razor-sharp. Aldric, to his credit, remained composed despite the overwhelming pressure.

"I will deliver your response," he said finally. "But I urge you to consider your path carefully, Duke Noctis. The Empire does not take defiance lightly."

Kael smirked. "And I do not take threats lightly."

With that, Aldric bowed, knowing there was nothing more to be gained. As the guards escorted him out, the hall remained silent for a long moment.

Selene was the first to break it. "They are testing you."

Kael nodded. "And they will soon learn that I am not one to be tested."

Lilian tilted her head. "So what now? Do we prepare for war?"

Kael's smirk deepened. "No. We play the game on our terms. Let the Empire think they hold power over me." His crimson eyes gleamed. "When the time comes, I'll make them kneel."

The game had begun, and Kael would ensure he was the one holding all the pieces.

To be continued....
