Chapter 2: 3
As predicted over the next couple of days Daniel was busy reorganising his workspace. As promised, anytime that Daniel had a concern either James or Goo would offer assistance or fix up a mistake. By the number of times he had gone to the founders for help they had insisted that he take their phone numbers, Goo had even slipped in Gun's number despite the younger man not having seen the irritating man since Sunday night.
Daniel slumps in his wheelie chair, noting with satisfaction that he was done with his set-up. Standardised equipment and material were in places where he could quickly access them, this ensured optimal efficiency which was something that Daniel definitely needed if he was going to work here. The only things he needed now were his patient's medical records, there wasn't anything on these records that were too invasive, merely allergies and past medical history. James had stated that he would need to dig out the files from his office which was weird, why would medical files be hidden away in their office than in the actual medical room?
Checking the clock on one side of the wall he notes that it was around 5 pm on the evening of a Wednesday. With everything finished and Daniel still having a couple of days before Friday he decided to roam the CC building. It was large but he still hadn't gotten the opportunity to explore it since he had been so busy. Brushing off his white coat and fixing the black shirt he had been wearing underneath, Daniel heads out.
He makes sure to take his Crew Corps identification card with him, it was something that James Lee had given him on Monday to showcase that he was not only a verifiable employee but also so he could access certain rooms and areas. It was like a key card of sorts.
With it being a Wednesday afternoon there weren't many people around, merely security members. Daniel takes a peek into the arena whilst it was silent and empty before moving on to the next room. He had wanted to check on the gym but had no clue which direction it was in. After asking a security guard where it was and being pointed in the general vicinity he eventually finds it and to his surprise, there were already other individuals there.
Poking his head through the door he takes note of two distinct groups, both crowded around a table and were excitedly cheering some people on. Walking closer towards the commotion, Daniel's curiosity gets the better of him and finally, he notes that two people were arm wrestling. One man in a white tank top, scruffy facial hair and tattoos that littered most of his exposed body were going up against another man who looked slightly more composed in his own black, long-sleeve shirt, a scar running across his mouth to his cheek although it looks faded and old.
"You're going to have to train a hundred more years if you want to beat me, Vasco" The scarred man grins despite working up a sweat against his opponent.
"I'm not going to go down easily" Vasco, the opponent calls and both let out roars as they push each other further.
"Come on Vasco! Show them the meaning of the Burnt Knuckles spirit!" Another male dressed similarly to Vasco calls, he had quite a pair of ears.
"Jake, you can do it! These brats need to be shown what romance and passion are!" some others call.
Finally, after several more minutes of struggling it was Jake who came out as the victor, smashing Vasco's hand against the table before everyone was letting out roars. He stands up with his arms raised in victory whereas the Burnt Knuckles comfort their leader.
"Hell yeah!" Jake grins before laughing as he was slapped on the back and congratulated by his crew members. "What'd you think about that, Sammy?" He asks, nudging one male that had been sitting on one of the weight benches.
It was Samuel Seo, the same guy that had brutally fought Nomen on Sunday and came out of it in a draw.
"I would have hit you if you lost, idiot" Samuel scoffs as he wipes his sweaty forehead. Daniel drags his eyes away from the man's exposed tattoos and attractive mullet towards Vasco who was nursing his bruised pride and sore arm.
Daniel wasn't a physiotherapist but even he could tell that the male's muscles were sore and tired after that tussle so he headed over to the male who was pouting as his big-eared friend was patting his shoulder. Heads seem to turn and watch him as he approaches the two.
"May I?" Daniel asks as he kneels at Vasco's eye level. The gang leader watches with wary eyes before something registers in them.
"Oh! You're the bystander that saved that Hostel guy's life!" He shouts much too loudly and Daniel attempts not to wince at the volume.
"Yes, would you like me to have a look at your arm?" Daniel asks gently and Vasco's intimidating aura is gone as he smiles sweetly, nodding vigorously as he shows his arm, wincing slightly at the movement.
"I can't believe I'm speaking to the Miracle Doctor! Jace look! It's really him!" He hisses, trying to be subtle which wasn't the case since his voice was still so loud regardless.
"Miracle Doctor?" Daniel huffs with a raised brow before choosing to ignore the words in favour of focusing on the arm. As he was feeling the tense muscles he notes that nothing was sprained or swelling up which was good.
"I suggest just resting for now, nothing is broken or sprained. If you really need it, I do have ice packs in my office" Daniel tells Vasco.
"Your office? You work here?" Jace asks with wide eyes. "I didn't realise the CC found another Doctor, actually I didn't think they would find one at all after the last incident" His voice fades as he speaks but Daniel was able to catch wind of what he was saying.
"Yes, I'll be the official onsite Doctor so if you have any medical queries and concerns then feel free to come by my office. I'm Dr Park by the way" He introduces, keeping it short and sweet as he bows slightly in greeting.
There were some people who returned the greeting and Daniel couldn't help but think that they weren't so intimidating. They might've been gang members and delinquents but at the very least they weren't trying to beat him up or insult him.
"Some people from our school actually mentioned that they had met you last Sunday" Jace mentions and Daniel nods.
"Was it Zack or Zoe? They were kind enough to help me out on Sunday when I was a bit clueless about how the CC operated" Daniel explains casually which causes Vasco's brows to shoot up.
"Zack Lee was being kind? That bully?" He scoffs and there were a couple of murmurs of agreement. Daniel was slightly dumbfounded by the words, whilst the boxer had some sharp edges it didn't seem that the boy was a bully. These days, anyone could be a bully.
"I'm just stating what I saw" Daniel shrugs before standing back up and taking note of the equipment in the room only to come face to face with Big Deal standing in rows of lines, watching his every move. Their faces were stoic as they stared down at Daniel and before the Doctor could do anything they made a show of bowing.
"Thank you, Doctor" They announce in unison and Daniel jumps at their booming voice.
They stand back up and Daniel can make out some faces that he recognised from Samuel to Jason to Jerry whose nose was still bandaged and bruised but looked slightly better. Jake steps forward and speaks on behalf of his crew.
"I'd like to thank you for helping Warren Chae, my crew members don't know their own strength and as a result, it ended up causing a situation that you had to resolve. We apologise for the trouble" He states evenly. Jake definitely had the aura of a leader, he spoke clearly and held himself confidently but he wasn't arrogant and cocky. Daniel smiles before shaking his head.
"I'd say it's alright but it wasn't. It doesn't matter though, I was only doing my job" Daniel replies kindly before walking over to where Jerry stood. "Hey big guy, how's your nose holding up? I'm sure it's still sore since it's only been a couple of days" He hums gently and Jerry shakes his head.
"I'm fine" He murmurs when Daniel delicately brings his hands to the taller boy's face and grasps it so he can inspect Jerry more closely. Freezing at the contact, Jerry stares back in bewilderment before leaning down slightly so Daniel doesn't have to stand on his toes.
"Have you been taking the medication I prescribed?" Daniel asks and Jerry hums out a confirmation, not knowing what to say. Eventually, once satisfied, he lets go and pats the male on the shoulder. "Good boy" Pulling something out of his white coat, he reaches for Jerry's large hands that dwarf Daniel's own before putting a small packet of milk candy in it.
Jerry stares at the piece of candy for a moment before shoving it into his pocket and kicking his feet sheepishly as if he were a child. Daniel lets a chuckle bubble out of his lips before turning to the group that was busy watching him.
"I should get going, I feel as if I've interrupted your training" Daniel states when Jake shakes his head.
"Not at all, we were just about to stop and go out for dinner" He calls before looking at Samuel. The two communicate silently before shrugging. "Dr Park, have you eaten yet?" He asks gingerly.
That was how Daniel ended up in Gangseo sitting in between Jake and Jerry as Big Deal and the Burnt Knuckles were busy conversing and eating.
"Is the food okay?" Jake asks and Daniel nods.
"Yes, it's great" Daniel compliments as he takes another bite.
"That's good to hear, Yeonhui and the other girls put a lot into preparing the food" Another man at the head of the table calls with a grin. He had slightly longer hair that was tied back, round-tinted shades and a bright smile on his lips as he spoke. "I'm Sinu Han by the way, former leader of Big Deal" He greets, Daniel's eyes the male before his eyes flicker to Jake who was still casually eating and minding his own business.
"Is that so?" He hums.
Daniel had to admit that he knew very little about the gangs and crews that ran South Korea. All that he was ever taught about them was that they were dangerous people and whilst he understood that they looked intimidating and could fight, he didn't seem all that dangerous in the current moment.
"So uh, what do you do nowadays?" Daniel asks curiously.
"I help Yeonhui run her shop" He answers before raising his glass cup in Daniel's direction. "How about you? I hear that you're a Doctor but you look way younger than me and most of the boys here. Not that I'm old, I'm only 22" He asks and Daniel nods.
"I am a Doctor, registered and all" Daniel hums as he takes a sip of his water, having refused the alcohol that he was offered. "And I'm 18" He whispers into the drink only to hear other people coughing and choking on their food.
"18?!" Jace cries out from where he sat. "How's that possible? You're our age!" He questions as Vasco was gaping from where he sat by his friend.
"Uh, I skipped a couple of years," Daniel hums, rubbing the back of his hand sheepishly. It was always embarrassing whenever he had to explain his education to others. Whilst his mother was proud, every time he told others about how he skipped several years and finished his university courses much faster than others he would either be judged or told that he was too cocky.
"So you're like a genius?" Samuel asks and Daniel shrugs.
"Not really," He mumbles to himself.
"Well, it's very impressive that someone of your age could pursue a career as a Doctor so fast" Jake states with a supportive smile. "I'm sure saving lives, doing surgeries and making a difference in people's days in positive ways is something you do every day" He hums.
Looking up at their faces, Daniel notices that their expressions and reactions were much more different to the ones he had to face in university. They were awed and amazed, people at the university felt threatened by his presence. Smiling into his food, Daniel continues eating.
"Yeah…" Daniel mumbles. He definitely wasn't doing big surgeries daily, he was too much of a screw-up to be trusted to do something like that, not to mention he had an innate fear of it.
"So, how did an intelligent Doctor like you end up working in a place like Crew Corporation?" Sinu asks, his surprise wearing off as he continues the conversation.
"Well the CC was looking for a medical practitioner and Chairman Choi, an investor of the CC came over to Seoul National Medical Centre to ask if he could hire any of the Doctors there. I just so happened to volunteer since I didn't think any of my other co-workers would have wanted to go" He answers honestly and they nod.
"That's quite honourable of you, Dr Park" Vasco huffs and Daniel chuffs in amusement.
"Um when I'm off work you don't have to call me Dr Park, Daniel's fine" He insists and they nod and agree to it. The conversation and atmosphere were light but Daniel knew that his next question would most likely change it but he had to ask.
"I'm quite new to this sort of scene and I've been sheltered for most of my life but there's something I'm curious about. I don't mean any offence for my question but why do you guys fight in the CC?" Daniel asks and conversations are cut off.
It grows silent.
"Way to ruin the mood" Samuel huffs before downing a glass cup filled with beer. "And you really don't know? The people love to talk about how the CC founders gloriously went around Korea and put all the gangs and crews into their places. They're always boasting about how they reduced the crime rates in Korea and how the streets of Seoul are so much safer because of those three bastards" He spat out.
"Going around and pretending like they're heroes or some shit when at the end of the day they're no better than any of us" Samuel adds.
"What do you mean by that?" Daniel continues digging.
"Well, James, Goo and Gun are all delinquents like any of us. It's kind of laughable how they pretend that they're not but they are" Jake sighs. "They prefer acting all high and mighty, it's how they acted when they came to beat and 'put us in our place' as Gun likes to say" At the mention of their names the leader lets out a soft growl.
"I'd argue that those three are more dangerous than any gang in Korea. Did you know that Goo is trained in all weapons? I heard that when the psycho was still in high school that he would go around beating people up to near death with different weapons to feed his superiority complex" Brad calls.
"James Lee isn't all that better either, he became the top dog of his school by fighting everyone and anyone and apparently he sent several people to the ER. Hell, that crazy guy went after the first-generation kings and won whilst also severely injuring all of them" Jason quips.
Daniel had heard about the mentions of the generation of fighters before but didn't know who exactly the kings were.
"As for Gun…well he's the worst of the three scumbags" Jake chuckles.
"He's literally a part of the Yakuza, the Yamazaki clan or some shit on his grandfather's side" Lineman hisses. "Apparently he's even got a title in Japan as the Shiro Oni"
"It's also on record that he's been to juvenile prison before" Jace mentions in a hushed voice.
"He was able to beat up every single prisoner in that facility all at once without a single officer interfering and he won. I don't know how he came out alive but he did" Vasco adds, eyes narrowed as he mentions it.
"That bastard is so cold-hearted and brutal…I still remember the day Sinu, Samuel and I returned back here to find all of Big Deal defeated" Jake grumbles. "We were attacked by that bastard unprovoked and when we went to get our revenge for our fallen comrades he and the other two…they…tch just talking about it pisses me off" Jake grunts and Daniel listens intently to the information.
"And what did Gun do to get sent to prison?" Daniel queries and people shrug.
"Probably murdered someone, wouldn't put it past that monster" Someone mentions and Daniel couldn't help but feel his distaste for Gun grow even further.
He already didn't like the male but hearing all that he'd done, for better or for worse, it put Gun at the bottom of his likeable list.
"So why do you participate at the CC? You never answered my initial question" Daniel looks at the groups earnestly.
"Other than being forced to fight? Vengeance" Samuel answers clearly.
Vengeance. Revenge. Retribution. The thirst to devour and defeat the founders was clear as day and Daniel couldn't blame them in the slightest. Feeling that the atmosphere was too heavy, Daniel changes the topic.
"So, how did Big Deal and the Burnt Knuckles become so close? I didn't think gangs could become friends" He asks good-naturedly and immediately Jake and Vasco break out into big grins.
"It's a funny story, actually"
.
.
.
The following day Daniel received a text message from James that he had found the medical files and so with renewed vigour he went to the CC building under the pretence that once he filed the documents away he would be done with his room except that dream was shattered the moment he got to his office. At that moment he regretted staying so late in Gangseo with Big Deal and the Burnt Knuckles the previous night.
"This is all the files?" Daniel gapes as he stares at the stacks and stacks of papers. "How many fighters do you have? Are they even consistently fighting every week?" he questions as he stares at the chaotic mess.
"Every individual who decides to fight here at the CC whether it's a one-time thing or reoccurring we have their medical record on file. I do admit that I haven't gone through all of them nor do I remember most of them either. Furthermore, it's not just our fighters but also our employees, the hires occasionally get hurt and sometimes need medical help" James replies blandly before shooting Daniel an apologetic look. "Honestly I would help you sort through them but I have a meeting to get to" He adds and Daniel merely holds up his hands and waves him off.
"Just leave me to this" Daniel sighed and the founder was gone within a moment. If the Doctor didn't know any better he would say that James Lee practically ran out and didn't look back, not that he could blame the guy. Sucking in a deep breath, Daniel rolls up his arm sleeves and gets to work.
Filing drawers weren't going to work, they were too small and with this many documents that would probably be ever-expanding, he would need actual bookcases instead. The room he was given was already quite small and filled with work desks, equipment and beds he wouldn't be able to fit the cases in the room itself so he would have to use the small connecting backroom. He sighs before leaving to take the measurements of the backroom before looking online for several bookcases that would fit into the room but also still allows Daniel to enter it. That process alone took over an hour since Daniel was quite picky. With the one-day delivery set, Daniel then sent the fee to James so he could be reimbursed.
Not just any storage unit would do, especially if he wanted to personalise the office and room to his own taste. Once that was done he looked back to the task that he had put off until that very moment. It was time to begin sorting through the files.
James must have ordered the file in the order he received them as there was no link between how they were sectioned. It made Daniel's work all the worse as he had to individually read each file, and identify who it belonged to before setting them aside. He had considered sorting them into crews and group affiliations but he quickly tossed that idea to the side due to his lack of knowledge of who belonged to which group. Instead, he resorted to the traditional alphabetical order method.
Another thing that bothered Daniel was that none of the files was labelled on the outside so Daniel had to label them manually himself. By the time lunch came around Daniel had only gotten through a fourth of the files whilst the rest still remained untouched. Letting out a groan Daniel could only run his hand through his hair.
Since when did being a Doctor mean that he had to do all this labour? This shouldn't be his job, it should have been administration work but unluckily there was no admin except for Gun, Goo and James and he had no secretary or nurse to assist him. So here he was, all alone and skipping lunch to get the job done quicker.
It was a Thursday which meant the next day the arena would be in use again which also leads to injuries. Daniel couldn't have these files lying around in an open mess if patients were going to be coming in and out, not only was it a work hazard but he also didn't like his workspace being cluttered, to begin with. So he works.
He could eat later and if he really needed to he could shower in one of the communal showers in the gym and he could sleep in the actual medical beds. He had lived a similar life when he was an intern and a first-year resident, this was child's play in comparison. He was going to finish this job no matter what. By the time the last of the files was placed in the correct pile, Daniel sags down onto the floor in exhaustion.
"Finally" He groans as he lies on the floor, head against the cold tiles before he looks up at the clock, noting that it was past midnight. He lets out another tired groan before pushing himself up and staring proudly at the piles, stretching his arms he feels bones crack, releasing some tension.
After the day he had, Daniel held newfound respect for people in the administration departments. Hell even his uncle as the Director of the SNMC had to deal with administration work, no wonder he was so cranky nowadays. Lifting himself up, the young Doctor contemplated whether or not he should just call it a night and go to sleep on one of the beds or go and shower. Lifting his arms and sniffing his armpits, Daniel gags.
"Shower it is" He sighs before shrugging off his white coat, grabbing one of the towels and heading towards the showers. The CC was a lot more eerie at night, with fewer security guards inside and barely any light. It took a while before Daniel caught sight of a familiar pathway that led to the gym. His eyes felt heavy and with each step he took he seemed to sag a little more from the exhaustion. Finally arriving at the gym he opens the door only to pause when he hears movement from inside.
Stepping in he readjusts his eyesight to the room that was only lit up due to the glass ceilings allowing the moonlight to seep through. A lone, lean figure was standing in front of a dummy with his arms raised into a fighting stance. Confused by the sight, Daniel rubs his eyes as if he couldn't believe that not only was someone still around at this time but that someone was training in the gym.
Stepping closer, Daniel watches as the person hits the dummy and how with each hit the power and force from fist to kick would make a sound that blasted through the large hall. It was impressive how the individual was so talented, almost scary even. As Daniel approaches closer and takes in the person he notices that he wasn't wearing a shirt.
Sweat glistens down the person's body due to the moonlight, it also showcases the tight and defined muscles that they had. From his abs to the rippling and well-defined back muscles He also noticed the sleeve tattoos on both arms that started at his wrists and ended at his elbows. Lots of people would probably drool at the sight, perhaps even squeal but when it came to Daniel his eyes were more focused on the scars that littered the mesmerising body.
Long, deep gashes made from knives, swords and possibly other sharp weapons. All of the scars were old, faded into the skin as if they had been there forever. Daniel wanted nothing more than to touch the particularly long scar that traced diagonally from the man's shoulder to the waist.
"You like what you see, Doctor?" The person speaks, spooking Daniel out of his stupor enough to fully register who the person really was.
"I didn't realise you liked to train so late, Gun" Daniel speaks stiffly. All of his exhaustion seems to run cold at the realisation that he was standing alone in a room in the middle of the night with an ex-prisoner. Except that Gun didn't look like Gun, well, he didn't look like the same man he had seen several days ago.
His hair wasn't slicked tightly back and instead remained loose and wet from sweat. His shades were gone which revealed the unique scars that ran across the bridge of the male's nose. It also allowed Daniel to make direct eye contact with the intense dark eyes Gun had been hiding, eyes that were searching his entire body and watching his every move. He watches as the irises dip down before looking back up.
"You didn't answer my question, Doctor" He smirks as he drops his form and approaches the boy as if he was a predator stalking his prey. Daniel could feel his nervousness grow, where had his bravery from Sunday gone? Had it been bravery or was he just stupid for insulting his employer?
Daniel backs up until he hits a rack of weights and Gun stands in front of him, raising a brow and waiting for his answer.
"I was merely watching because I was intrigued" Daniel replies nonchalantly. "I don't see much anyways" He shrugs and that answer seemed to annoy the elder.
"Is that so? And here I thought that the intense look you were giving me meant something more ludicrous, perhaps even tantalising" He chuckles, leaning into Daniel's space which makes the younger one sweat.
"I don't know what you're trying to insinuate Mr Park but whatever it is you should stop" Daniel hisses, trying to maintain eye contact but failing at doing so as he turns to face the floor. "I was only looking for the showers, I didn't intend to find you messing around with the dummies" He adds and Gun chuckles.
"Mr Park, Doctor Park, people are going to have a hard time remembering who is who if you keep referring to me like I'm an old man. Besides I wasn't messing around with the dummies, I could show you how I actually mess around with people if you'd like" He offers and it was with those words that Daniel was able to find the strength to push Gun away.
Shoving the man off and out his way, Daniel glares harshly as Gun stares back dumbfounded. Whether it was from being rejected or actually being pushed, Daniel didn't know but he wasn't going to continue taking this teasing.
"You know what? People are right when they say that you're a bastard and asshole" He states, remembering the insults Big Deal and Burnt Knuckles had hurled out when they talked about the three founders. "I absolutely despise people that are arrogant and cocky, more so when they know how they act is horrible but do it anyway. I'm not someone you can just push around and do your bidding so I suggest you just leave me alone" Daniel hisses and Gun stares back with hardened eyes.
"You're not exactly fun to be around either" Gun retorts. "You're not my type, you're annoying and just another snot-nosed brat. You can fool others with your mature, Doctor act but to me, you're just another kid who needs disciplining" He huffs and Daniel bristles at the words.
"Fuck you Jong Gun Park" Daniel calls before shoving past him and moving towards the showers.
"Showers are in the opposite direction"
With those words Daniel turns around and walks the other way, ignoring the amused look the elder casts towards him. Once Danel enters the area he selects the stall at the end of the room, quickly undressing he turns on the shower head to its maximum hot water before waltzing in, not bothering to wait until it heats up so he's doused with cold water. He preferred hot showers but right now he needed to cool off.
Gun was just as every bit mean and cruel as people described him to be and he was even more so annoying. Why couldn't he be like James who was at the very least charming or like Goo who was funny in his absurd ways.
Slowly but surely the water heats up to a more reasonable temperature. Resting his forehead on the cool tile walls he lets the water drown out all the sounds. His body relaxes and he shuts his eyes. He was so tired and he hadn't even started officially working yet. Maybe he really was in over his head, if he told his uncle that he couldn't do this job then he would send another Doctor in without hesitation. Jinyoung was reliable like that and he would be understanding too, much more understanding than he would be with other people but Daniel didn't want that.
He didn't want to disappoint his uncle any more than he already has. The man had spent so long and so much effort helping and teaching him how to become a Doctor and he had messed up. How could he be a Doctor if he was scared of operating and doing surgery? What kind of half-assed Doctor was that? He was ashamed but he couldn't do anything to change himself. Not when every time he stood in front of an open body and froze.
Daniel opens his eyes, stepping back slightly only to falter. Dizziness and nausea filter through his body and he attempts to shake his head and breathe heavily to relieve the feelings but it doesn't make him feel any better. The water that was hitting him had become scalding hot and his skin was turning pink from it.
Before he could even register what was happening his back was hurting and he was staring at the ceiling. He let out a soft groan of pain as he curled up into himself. Perhaps taking a hot shower whilst he hadn't eaten or gotten proper sleep wasn't the best idea. The last thing he registers is the door of his stall being kicked open before he passes out.
.
.
.
Gun didn't really have an opinion on the new Doctor, sure he was irritating to be around and every time the man saw him he felt exasperated, especially when he opened his mouth to speak but he couldn't deny that he wasn't intrigued. He was intrigued with how someone so young could become a Doctor so quickly, he was intrigued with how the younger male despite the fear that was exhibited in his eyes wasn't afraid to speak up and call him out. It was interesting too, if anyone else dared to speak to Gun like that they would have already been bleeding on the floor.
James and Goo had made him promise not to hurt the Doctor seeing as they were on their last straw when it came to looking for a medical practitioner and they couldn't afford to lose another one. So Gun tried to remain as civil as possible, he refrained from picking a fight and he hadn't raised his fists at all at the other male. Sure the kid was a pain in his ass with all his snarky comments, acting all high and mighty as if Gun was nothing more than dirt under his foot but hey, Gun hadn't hit the boy which was better than what he could say about the previous employees.
Dr Daniel Park had left for the showers and Gun would be lying if his eyes hadn't been watching the other man walk away. Well, his eyes were trained on the Doctor's lower back more than anything. Several minutes had passed and whilst Gun had turned back to the training he couldn't focus anymore. Calling it a night he heads towards the shower himself, noticing that the Doctor had picked the stall at the very end of the room he heads to the one closest to the doors.
If the Doctor didn't want anything to do with him then he would oblige. As Gun moves to turn on the water to warm it up he hears a loud thud from across the room. Frowning at the sound, Gun turns off his shower to strain his ears and listen. A soft groan echoes through the room and the frown on Gun's face deepens even further.
He could leave the Doctor alone but something in his gut told him to go investigate so he did because when has his gut ever been wrong? Heading towards the stall he knocks on it gently.
"Hey Doc, are you doing alright in there?" He called roughly but there wasn't a reply.
Even if the younger Doctor was angry he would at the very least respond…right? Thinking about it now, Daniel didn't look so good when he had been speaking earlier.
"I really don't want to ask you again Doc, are you good in there?" He calls again. The only reason he was being insistent was because they needed the Doctor. Again there was no reply. "Look, I'm gonna break the door down if you don't reply" He threatened lightly and there was still nothing.
Letting out an annoyed grunt, Gun easily breaks open the door. He'd get someone to fix the lock later. He didn't know what he was expecting but it certainly wasn't a Doctor passed out naked on the floor. Snapping out of his shock, Gun hurries forward to turn off the water which was still steaming hot before kneeling down next to the smaller male. The kid definitely had some muscle to him but in comparison to Gun, he was nothing.
Gun wasn't a kind person. He was an asshole and a bastard just like Dr Park had said him to be, he didn't care if people got hurt and he certainly didn't care about people he barely knew. So in a moment of reluctance, Gun pulls the boy up and feels his forehead, is seemed warm but he couldn't determine if it was from the water or if he had a fever.
Letting out a deep sigh he grabs the towel and throws it over the boy before scooping him up. If James or Goo were to ever find out what he was doing then he was going to be teased for a lifetime.
.
.
.
Daniel woke up to the smell of warm soup. At least that's what his brain and stomach register as he sits upright much faster than he should have. His head felt like it was being split open from the inside out but he ignored it in favour of looking around for the food only to see that he was in his medical bay on one of the beds.
Blinking around blankly Daniel thinks intensely about what had happened last night and how he magically ended up in bed. He remembered going to the gym and seeing Gun, he remembered arguing with the elder before going to shower before…before passing out. Daniel couldn't help but feel sick at the thought of just randomly passing out in the shower, he was supposed to be the Doctor and yet somehow it was him who had gotten sick.
Taking a moment to run his hand through his hair and struggle out of the bed, Daniel eventually finds a bag of food as well as a note that was left with it.
'Wouldn't do us well if the Doctor got sick - JG'
It had been Gun who had taken him back to his office, of course, it had to be him since he was the only person around but it didn't mean Daniel didn't feel embarrassed. Especially since he had been so rude to the male just before passing out. Letting out another groan he starts digging into the food before noticing several boxes in the room with him.
His package.
Did Gun also deliver the packages all the way to his office? Daniel couldn't help but wonder why the man had done all this for him despite their dislike for one another. Shaking the thoughts out of his head he focuses on eating. With renewed vigour, he would finish organising his office before the matches later that night.
Daniel finishes setting up the backroom close to 3 PM and by then a couple of other volunteers had shown up which included Mira, all dressed in their uniforms. There were still several hours before the night would begin so he just tasked them to help him finish setting up the documents before talking with each one of them about what they knew about performing first aid or if they had any medical experience.
Most had said they had their first aid licences which was a relief to hear. At that point, he had introduced himself as the Doctor they would be working with and they were ecstatic about it. Apparently, the previous employees were old and annoying to work with which was weird to hear but Daniel wasn't there to gossip. He managed to fit in an early yet very short dinner before briefing the group on what they were going to do.
Instead of sending all fighters to the medical bay after their fights he was going to bring a first aid kit to the arena exit. Therefore he could treat and check up on each and every one of the fighters but also watch the fights in case something goes wrong. He had the feeling that most fighters would try to avoid medical help and pretend to 'walk off' their wounds which wouldn't lead to the best of scenarios. So he was going to treat them, anyone with much more serious cases would be taken on a stretcher back to the medical bay, this would limit the number of people that need to be taken to the room but also maintain the flow of patients.
There wouldn't be any continuous build up and it would ensure that everyone would at least be tended to.
The volunteers agreed to this method, surprised by the ideas but Daniel just shrugged. He had interned in the ER department before with highly trained nurses and doctors and they needed to always act quickly and efficiently due to the number of patients they had. He had always thought that people in the ER such as code nurses were quite skilled and brave for what they did under all the pressure they had. It was admirable.
Night falls and the CC was bound to start so Daniel orders the group to start setting up their stations at the arena's exit. Due to being at the exit, the group had a free view of the fight as well as the crowd that was entering the arena. It was a little more extraordinary to see the crowd from the very bottom than just in one of the seats.
"Dr Park" A voice calls and Daniel turns to see a mop of blonde hair walking towards him.
"Mr Kim" He greets and the blonde lets out a laugh.
"Come on Doctor, no need to call me by my last name, just call me Goo" he grins good-naturedly before patting the younger man's shoulder. The patting comes down a little harsher than necessary, making Daniel stumble slightly.
"Alright, Goo" He tests out with a nod.
"I just came by at Gun's request to check up on how everything is going. I told the big oaf that you'd be fine and that you were a professional but he insisted that I at least come and monitor your set up and from the looks of it you're doing great. Just as I predicted" Goo calls as he surveys the area. "Do you need any help at all?" Goo offers and Daniel shakes his head.
"We're fine, thank you for coming by" Daniel replies evenly, not knowing what else to say to the blonde's explanation. "How many fights are on for tonight?" he questions and the founder whips out his phone.
"Next time if you'd like to check the line up you can head to our website. They'll have a list of who's participating for the week and you can prepare from that" He shows the list and notices that there were over ten different fights lined up.
At Daniel's wide-eyed look the blonde laughs.
"Fridays are our busiest day and usually there would be way more fights than this but next week is the start of the tournament so people are holding out until then to participate" Goo explains and Daniel nods.
"Thank you, I'll make sure to have a look at the list" Daniel nods when he feels Goo patting his head.
"God you're so adorable, being so nice and kind when you speak and shit" He coos teasingly. "I just wanna crush and squish you to death" He adds morbidly and Daniel could feel his eyebrow twitch at the words.
"Thank you, Goo. I believe you should be getting back to your seat" He insists and the founder nods before waving goodbye to the group and leaving. "Is he always this eccentric?" Daniel questions no one in particular but the resounding 'yes' from the group was enough to make him laugh.
"But It's better than how Gun would treat us," Someone mentions.
"Really? I'd take the silent scowling over constant yapping any day of the week" Someone else snickers.
"Alright, enough with the gossiping the matches are starting" Daniel calls just as James starts speaking through the speakers.
The cameras were on the VIP booth, and Daniel sees Gun sitting beside his co-worker, looking passive and bored as always. No matter how hard the Doctor tried he just couldn't picture the gangster purposefully helping him in any way possible. He couldn't see Gun going out of his way to kindly pick Daniel up from the wet floor, dress him up and tuck him into bed, furthermore, he couldn't see the man going out to buy not only food but also picking up his delivery order and setting it inside the medical room so he didn't need to do it himself. Jong Gun Park was an enigma.
As the matches started Daniel was fixated on the fights. It would be a lie to say that the fights themselves weren't interesting to watch. The different skills and martial arts alone were enticing, Daniel couldn't blame people for watching especially since there were barely any rules preventing foul play. The night started out pretty calmly, the fights weren't too over the top or dangerous looking and the fighters that did come out to get checked out only had minor injuries.
Samuel had also fought that night as well against some unlucky fellow from the runaway Fam that had challenged him. The Big Deal member had defeated the guy in less than half the time he was given and the only reason he had taken that long was due to him dragging it out. Samuel came out with a couple of cuts and scratches whereas the other was missing a couple of teeth and had a black eye.
Daniel moved to go and check on the poor guy only to be grabbed by Samuel himself as he walked by.
"Aren't you going to check me, Dr Park?" He asks with a smile as blood runs down the cut on his cheek.
"I'll check you after I've checked upon Mr Jeon" Daniel replies easily as he tries to sidestep the male only to be held onto with a vice grip. What was it with people in the CC manhandling him around?
"You don't think I'm in critical condition?" Samuel pouts. "I'm just as hurt as he is" He adds the blatant lie and Daniel rolls his eyes.
"Mr Seo you did quite a number on him" Daniel hums, staring down the large, tattooed man defiantly before Mira cuts in.
"It's alright Dr Park, we'll take care of Mr Jeon" She offers and Daniel shoots her an annoyed look whilst Samuel huffs out a soft laugh.
"There you go Doc, you should rely on the people you're working with more often" He smiles and Daniel huffs before nodding. Turning to the volunteers he gives them a firm look.
"Make sure he doesn't choke on his blood or something stupid" He hisses and they nod quickly before going to tend to the poor male that was still groaning in pain. "Alright Mr Seo, let's take a look at your 'injuries' shall we?" Daniel smiles sweetly before grabbing a first aid kit and shoving Samuel into place.
From what Daniel could see and from what he saw during the match, the runaway fam member didn't do much damage against Samuel. Sure there were a few pity hits that the Big Deal member allowed the other male to land but due to his muscles and how weak the hits were, they didn't do much. It didn't even look like there would be bruises left behind, not that Daniel could tell due to all the tattoos that were inked against the man's skin.
"Did you strip for any other reason than to seduce the crowd?" Daniel asks as he inspects the body, this draws another laugh from Samuel.
"You're real funny Doc but yes, there was a more tactical aspect to my fight other than just trying to seduce the crowd" Samuel answers as he looks down at Daniel.
Daniel didn't mind people that were taller than him, he himself wasn't all that tall but he wasn't all that short either. Having Samuel looking down at him like this with an amused smile was a little degrading, also for some reason, it embarrassed him slightly.
"And what would that be?" Daniel inquires as he checks the cuts that were on Samuel's fists, quickly cleaning the cuts with water and alcohol wipes. Samuel doesn't so much as hiss as he allows Daniel to help him out.
"He's a grappler, the more there is to grab onto the worse it is for me. I simply removed my clothes so that he would have less to grab onto, plain and simple. I guess the crowd going wild and hearing a bunch of screaming chicks is also a benefit, I've worked hard for my body don't you think?" He asks teasingly and Daniel hums absentmindedly.
Sure Samuel's body was godly to look at but he wasn't focused on it. The strategy that Samuel had just spouted was actually quite clever, it showed that within his muscles his brain also worked. A sly strategy for a sly man such as him.
"Should you be focused on screaming women when Jake Kim is so fixated on you?" Daniel scoffs as he looks up. Samuel's eyes grow wide for a second before he's chuckling again.
"You really do amuse me Doc, you're a real observant one" He mentions and Daniel shrugs.
"Comes with being a doctor" He replies before patting his broad shoulder. "Lean down a bit, I need to clean the cut on your cheek" Daniel orders and Samuel slides down, spreading his legs before he's eye to eye with him.
Now that Samuel was staring right back into Daniel's soul he felt that maybe being looked down at was a better thing. Samuel Seo's eyes were intently focused on Daniel's and he could barely work as he felt his face heat up. He couldn't deny that the fighter was eye-catching, not only with his tattoos and well-toned muscular body but also with his handsomely roguish face. The smirk that was on his lips was held there with confidence.
Daniel's eyes dart away to the cut as he cleans it as quickly as possible which leads to his mistake of dabbing too harshly against the skin. Samuel lets out a hiss and Daniel quickly pulls away.
"Sorry, did that hurt?" Daniel asks as Samuel raises a large hand to cover his.
"It's fine, just be gentle with me Doctor" Samuel whispers as he leans in closer, whispering the words into Daniel's ear in an almost sultry tone. "I'm rather sensitive" He adds as he lifts his other hand to wrap around the side of Daniel's neck.
Samuel ran hot, his touches burned into Daniel's skin but he didn't move away. Whether it was by choice or not, he didn't know. He shakes off the hand and cleans the cut in a much gentler motion before going to place a bandaid on it.
"Jake and I, we mess around but it's nothing serious" Samuel suddenly admits, waiting as Daniel pauses before ignoring the words. "Everyone around our age likes to mess around, experiment and all that shit. We're growing boys after all" He explains and Daniel nods, humming along to his words as he focuses both on the injury and the hand creeping up to feel his cheek.
"I've seen Jason and Brad come out of the same bathroom stall once, Lineman doesn't hide the fact that he has something with Lua, and I've noticed that Eli and his ex-friend are oddly close despite the fact that Eli has a kid back home and the two are supposed to be enemies" Daniel raises an eyebrow in disbelief. "It's true, I've seen the hickeys whether you choose to believe me or not. I've seen how flushed Johan is whenever he leaves after seeing some boxing friend of his, Xiaolong and Nomen have messed around behind their employer's backs, hell I've even seen how Goo and Gun interact" He rattles on and Daniel stifles a gasp before looking into Samuel's eyes.
"Are you pulling my leg? Why are you telling me all of this like some gossiping aunty?" Daniel asks with narrowed eyes and the smirk on the male's lips becomes almost wolfish as he leans closer.
His lips ghosted over Daniels.
"I'm just saying that it's normal to mess around, what I want is to mess around with a pretty thing like you" Samuel admits like a sinner. "You're pleasing to look at and I want to see more of you, is that so horrible?" He whines as a hand snakes over to catch Daniel's waist, fingers digging under his coat and shirt.
Daniel was frozen, watching and waiting for Samuel to say anything else. His heart beats like a drum against his chest, it was so loud that he was sure the other male could hear it with how close it was.
"Enough" Daniel hisses.
"Don't tell me you've never messed around with anyone before, Doctor" He chuckles and Daniel rips himself out of the bigger man's grip, taking several steps away and placing a hand on Samuel's chest to stop him from moving forward to follow him.
"I am your Doctor and you are my patient, let's not do anything to step over that boundary especially since I don't know you very well to begin with Mr Seo. You've been patched up, I suggest you stop taking up my time and leave" He orders firmly and the amused smile on the larger man's face doesn't die.
"Alright, I'll leave but if you do want to get to know me more intimately you know where to find me" He states loudly before turning to leave.
Daniel watches him walk away, grabbing his discarded shirt and coat before leaving his line of sight. Daniel could feel himself breathing more freely once Samuel was gone, feeling that his cheeks were still burning red; he attempted to ignore the feeling by turning to his next patient. Except that the volunteers were practically finished with cleaning him up and giving him painkillers. There wasn't much that Daniel specifically could do about the broken teeth except refer him to a dentist so the male was carted away to rest in the medical bay.
"Daniel, are you alright?" Mira asks as she comes to stand next to him, concern shining in her eyes. "I'm sorry if I overstepped your boundaries, I forget how much of a player Samuel can be" She huffs in annoyance.
"That wasn't his first time trying to seduce someone around here?" Daniel asks and she nods.
"He got some female Doctor from a while ago pregnant" She answers blandly and Daniel blanches in shock.
"Huh?" Daniel gapes.
"Yeah, it wasn't really all that much of a shocker to most of the people that have been here a while but Samuel used to vicariously flirt with her. After a couple of months, she got pregnant and was fired from here. Apparently, she got an abortion after realising that he was only messing around with her. He's a bit of an ass so I'd keep an eye out on him" Mira states and Daniel could see that her blood was boiling just from the words.
"I'll keep that in mind," Daniel nods. "Does that happen often? Medical staff being wooed by fighters?" He inquires and Mira lets her anger fade into soft laughter.
"I guess if it comes to the female practitioners, most of the men we've gotten were middle-aged and married, they couldn't stand to deal with such angsty and emotional young adults. They often got angry and would lash out which caused the fighters to lash back which would almost always lead to a fight and you can bet that the fighters would win those fights" She sighs and Daniel nods.
That explained why some of the medical practitioners left.
"Although you're a bit of a special case, you practically proved yourself in front of the entirety of the CC community. Fighters, fans, employees and all just by saving Warren's life. I'd say that most of the people here trust you a lot, there'll be a couple that doubts you but I'm sure you'll overcome them. Moreover, you're attractive and young, you should see the comments and fans you accumulated just from that one moment" She teases and Daniel drags his eyes from the next fight that was occurring over to the brunette.
"Excuse me?"
"You mean you haven't seen?" Mira asks with a laugh. "Since so many people watch the CC both in person and through the streams, a lot of people saw you heroically dive from the crowd and rush to save Warren. They've dubbed you as the Miracle Doctor" She informs, Daniel cringes.
That was where the nickname came from?
"That's…ok wow, I'm avoiding the general public from now on" He sighs. "I'm going to ignore that and focus on my job, never mention that nickname ever again or else I'm firing you" Daniel states and Mira lets out a huff of amusement before turning back to the fight.
"Whatever you say Miracle Doctor" She teases and Daniel lets out a sigh.
Surprisingly enough the fights for the rest of the weekend went by smoothly without any fatal injuries. Just from those three days alone, Daniel could tell that the CC made an extreme amount of money, no wonder he was being paid so well, in fact, he would even argue that he was being paid more than he used to at SNMC. That didn't mean he wasn't tired.
"How's work, any trouble yet?" Jinyoung asks his nephew who was sitting in his office to provide him with a written report.
"No" Daniel answers as he slides the files across the desk.
"So that act you pulled a week ago, that was just some spontaneous thing you came up with?" He asks and Daniel pauses, dragging his tired eyes to meet his uncle.
"I had to help, those guys would have killed him" Daniel shrugs. "I didn't plan it if that's what you're insinuating" Daniel sighs and Jinyoung snorts before taking the report and skimming through it.
"So how is the CC treating you? Just by the looks of it you already sound tired, it's not as if you're doing long-hour surgeries over there" Jinyoung scoffs and Daniel shrugs.
"It's just the excitement of the fights wearing off, you know their fights are actually quite thrilling to watch. The horrible aspects aside, they're all really skilled" Daniel hums as he leans back in his chair. "I don't think I've ever seen so many types of martial arts before…actually to be fair you're the only one I've ever seen fight" He adds and Jinyoung rolls his eyes.
"I don't fight anymore, I'm too old for that sort of stuff" Jinyoung grunts.
Daniel nods before pausing.
"Wait, you watched me save that person's life? Were you watching the stream?" Daniel gasps loudly with wide eyes. "Do you secretly watch the CC? Are you a fan?" The young Doctor catches the stapler thrown at his head.
"Don't be ridiculous, I didn't watch any stupid stream. The only reason I saw what happened was that it happened to be trending around Facebook and some associates of mine sent it into our Doctor professionals only group chat and I recognised your sorry ass" Jinyoung denies and Daniel laughs.
"Awe and here I thought you did something interesting in your time off" Daniel coos as Jinyoung rolls his eyes.
"Get out of my office you brat"
