Chapter 17: 18
Gun didn't get much sleep that night, the bits and pieces that he did receive were peaceful but short as he would frequently wake up in between, startling out of his slumber in a brief panic each time. His inability to sleep wasn't because of Daniel, no he didn't mind the warmth of the body that lays close to him but when he was aware his mind couldn't help but unconsciously go into overdrive. Rigid with tension, muscles and brain power that won't rest simply because he wasn't used to sleeping in this room and with anyone else yet all he needs to do to calm down each time he wakes up is look over at Daniel's peacefully sleeping body. The Doctor could sleep through an earthquake if he wanted to seeing as he hadn't been startled awake once because of Gun.
Gun wasn't in danger, no one was going to attack him. No one was going to kill him. He didn't need to be on the edge of combat ready. Besides, even if someone was lurking in the shadows and ended up hurting Gun, Doctor Daniel Park would make the pain go away anyway.
But then he would recall the night they had. The soft looks, the dancing, the gentle holding and the flutters of burning kisses that felt so short yet held so much and all of a sudden he was alert again. His heart would be pounding, his breathing would become heavy and it'd feel like a panic attack.
Gun lets out a soft groan. Light was starting to shine through the curtains which meant that morning was approaching which also meant that Daniel would be waking up soon. The main reason for his headache and suspiciously timed heart palpitations.
Gun should have never agreed to sleep by the Doctor's side. He should have never agreed to the soft pleadings. Since when had he ever given into begging before? He hadn't even listened to his parents most of the time but when it came to Daniel's stupid but oh so charming sweet requests he would cave. He should have left.
Gun should have never made this little arrangement between them in the first place. Not that there was anything wrong with the sex. No, the sex was perfect…perhaps that's why Gun was so worried. Gun's had a plethora of sex partners before, some good and some bad but none of them could compare to how compatible the Doctor was with him. Furthermore, Daniel wasn't just compatible with him in bed but he was also perfect in every other aspect outside of it.
"I should've fucking known" Gun huffs as he watches the Doctor sleep, laying there so peacefully as if the person next to him couldn't kill him in a matter of seconds. Not that Gun would, he had grown too attached to even think about killing Daniel. Or maybe he should kill him, that way he could get rid of all these useless emotions he had been feeling recently.
Gun's not the type to grow attached to anything. Whether it be people, animals or objects. But the moment he started caring about whether or not he was going too hard on the younger man when they were training, when he started worrying during some nights when the Doctor would arrive later than their agreed times, hell the moment he started getting jealous he should have fucking known. He had grown too comfortable with Daniel Park. Not in the same way he grew used to Goo or James' presence. No. Gun had to be more aware of the younger, had to care more about his opinion or reactions than anyone else around him and worst of all he was bothered at the thought of the younger man dropping him as a partner, which was stupid because he had been the one to set the rules and boundaries.
Did Gun want to scream and kick around on the bed? Yes. Could he do it and potentially wake up and piss off Daniel…Yeah, he could. Did he want to do that? Not particularly.
Gun muffles another groan with a hand. What happened to the days when he would drop people after sex? What happened to his previous plan where finally having sex with Daniel Park would stop these weird emotions and urges? So much for that.
"Gun?" A voice murmured and suddenly the bed was shifting. Daniel was turning around to face the elder who had been lying on his back, arms beneath his head as he was staring up at the ceiling. "Are you okay? How long have you been awake?" The Doctor questions and Gun shrugs.
"Not long" He lies. "Go back to sleep" He grunts and the Doctor hums before curling into the Founder's side. Cuddling. Daniel Park was cuddling Gun like he was some baby koala yet Gun couldn't find it in his cold dead heart to push the other away.
Letting out a sigh his own eyes flutter shut. Maybe he could also do with a couple more minutes of sleep.
.
.
.
Nothing and everything had changed, that's what Daniel had noticed since the night Gun had taken him out. It had been a short while since then and ever since he had woken up around midday to Gun still sleeping next to him he had noticed a shift in the air of their…Relationship? Partnership?
They weren't dating. They were still casually having sex with each other. They still saw each other at night to train. So technically nothing notable was different.
What had changed was the distance. Perhaps Daniel was making this all up in his head and he was being delusional again but the distance that Gun had put in between them didn't feel like an overwhelming chasm of space anymore. It wasn't intimidating, it was now just …a long stretch of hard work and effort. Daniel had always been pushing Gun's boundaries and the other had never denied or pushed the Doctor away from it before, now he was actively partaking in the acts.
Daniel would walk over to the other and lean into his side. Gun would press back wordlessly.
Daniel would need help perfecting a fighting move, Gun would pop up behind him with soothing words and gentle hands that guide him. It was brief and he'd eventually switch back to taunting and handling Daniel roughly but the Doctor noticed the moments.
Daniel would want to say something important and confidential to the older man and he would purposefully lean down so the other could whisper the words in his ears.
Even the sex. What was hard and rough and was still hard and rough was now filled with moments of tenderness. Heated looks, meaningful kisses, compassionate touches.
It drove Daniel over the wall because it didn't feel like he could address the changes. Like if he mentioned anything then it would all be taken away from him due to how fragile it all was. So Daniel accepted the changes without acknowledging it verbally, without question and disdain because he enjoyed it. So no, they haven't labelled themselves as dating and as much as Daniel wanted to pose the question 'What are we?' he found that he couldn't for the fear of ruining everything.
"We didn't have to watch a horror movie if you can't stomach that sort of thing" Gun grunts as he passes Daniel a water bottle to which the younger one accepts.
"I handled it fine" Daniel replies snippily, downing the water with viscous gulps before turning back to look at Gun's disbelieving face. "Ok so I may have been tense but that's the point of a horror movie, isn't it?" He bites back and Gun snorts.
"Just tense? I'm pretty sure you screamed and squealed more times than I could count, not to mention you grabbing on to me as if the monster could jump out the screen" The Founder teases and Daniel grumbles under his breath.
Gun had finally found the time to take Daniel to go and see that movie he had suggested. Daniel found the film to be horrifying whereas Gun found it to be a letdown.
"I still can't believe you didn't even flinch" Daniel huffs and Gun shrugs.
"Most of the movie was far-fetched with a predictable plot line, furthermore you'd think with all the movie's budget going into special effects and CGI it'd look a lot better but it just made it even more unrealistic" Gun rattles off and Daniel raises a brow.
"Have you ever thought about becoming a movie critic? You and your cynical nature would fit right in" Daniel jeers and Gun snorts.
"I'm sure I would" he replies before the both of them go quiet. Daniel could feel the older man's gaze on him, how could he not when he made it his purpose to stare so intensely?
"The tournaments coming up again" Gun huffs out and the mention of the tournament makes Daniel sour.
"Oh…hurray?" Daniel offers, lacking every bit of enthusiasm he feels, showcasing his opinion of the event.
"Calm down, don't get too excited" Gun grunts, a grin that didn't necessarily meet his eyes was on his lips. "I know it was a shit show last time but I'm sure this time will be fine. None of the rules and details have changed but we will be more vigilant this time around. None of the contestants will be sent to the emergency room this time" He promises and Daniel holds back a snort.
"Nothing ever turns out fine when they say it will" Daniel responds, knocking their knees together. "You've just jinxed everything" He points out and Gun makes a show of gasping.
"Oh no, I better knock on wood" He replies, going along with the joke as he hits the wooden bench they were sitting on. Daniel lets out an amused huff before turning back to stare at the open area. It wasn't too late into the afternoon and there were many families around, none who paid attention to the two men thankfully.
"Should we have an ambulance be on standby?" Daniel inquires. "It might cost a lot of money but just in case…" His request dies out as Gun shakes his head.
"It's not a far-fetched idea…although I'm pretty sure that James was discussing a solution with Eugene over hospital and ambulance cover. That slimy twerp has business plans to create a private ambulance company or something like that. He also owns several pharmaceutical companies and is an investor in the Grimm Plastic Surgery Centre" Gun explains and Daniel listens intently.
Daniel remembers the first and only time that he had interacted with the VIP on the day of the tournament when Mandeok was injured. It wasn't much of an interaction but he did remember the man picking up on something going on between the Founder and the Doctor. Which was strange because, at that point in time, nothing had been happening. Hell, he hadn't even started training with Gun yet.
"Oi, you're making an ugly face" Gun grunts. "What's wrong?" The older man questions and Daniel merely kicks his ankle in retaliation to the words.
"Nothing," He replies before standing up. "Anyways, let's get going" Daniel urges and eventually with a sigh, Gun gets up and follows.
.
.
.
"Here is the list of fighters for the Tournament that will be happening in a couple of weeks" James hands over, having taken the time to travel to his office rather than have Daniel go to his.
"That's quite the stack of papers, isn't it better to email or put all this stuff online?" Daniel asks as he takes the documents. "Now that I mention it, wasn't it better to have all these files online rather than as physical copies? Wouldn't it be easier?" He points to the room of patient files.
"You're not wrong but it's easier to hack into, steal and wipe out all our files and information if they're online" James shrugs.
"As opposed to coming in and robbing us physically?" Daniel snorts before crossing his arms. "But seriously though, eventually you're going to run out of storage space for all these papers and files. What gives? Any other hospital would have an online database for easier management and I know we're not a real hospital and that in its most basic form, this is a fight club and the nurse's office but still. It's not as if we don't have the money for it" Daniel urges as James leans back against his desk.
"You've been making a lot of changes and demands ever since you got here, Doctor Park" James muses and the Doctor falters. Was he crossing a boundary?
"Only with the best intentions" Daniel responds formally.
"I know," James smiles, reaching out to ruffle Daniel's hair. "But as you said, this is a fight club. Most of our fighters may be classified as highschoolers and delinquents but you also forget that most of them are in crews and gangs. Some of them are even criminals, some have been through rough shit and they trust in the CC to keep their secrets. It's why we can't just have their most basic information in some online form where enemies or feds could get their hands on them. Hackers from anywhere could try to take it and although our resident computer nerd Kouji does well to create firewalls and security measures it's not always enough. Besides, it takes a lot more effort to come in and attempt to steal something from the CC" The redhead explains and Daniel nods.
It was true. With the crowds, security team, cameras and security measures, the hundreds of fighters, the Founders as well as Daniel spending the majority of his time in this one room, the physical files were well guarded.
"I see," Daniel nods in understanding before opening up the files to start going through the lists. "Any new or particular fighters I should know about?" He inquires and James hums in thought.
"The number of fighters this time around for the 18th Tournament has grown exponentially which means the first round will be the messiest. The first few pages are the list of new names that haven't participated in the CC before whereas the next two are names of fighters that are with the CC but it will be their first in the Tournament itself. The rest are regulars. Because there are so many fighters this time around I may have to tweak the rounds a bit to accommodate the changes" James advises.
Daniel sifts through the papers. The first held full names, affiliations, fighting styles as well as contact details and appointment times. Due to them being new, it meant that they would have to come in and do the usual check-up with Daniel.
"I'll be busy for a while" Daniel sighs as he makes a mental note to calendar all the appointments. "But I'm assuming that Nurse Hong will be in to help out during this time anyways" he muses and James nods.
"There's something I'd also like for you and Nurse Hong to add to your list of checkups. Not just for the new fighters but for all of the contestants. A urinal drug test" James states and Daniel stares wide-eyed before nodding. It was a reasonable test, they were a fancy fight club but a fight club nonetheless, doping or taking any illegally enhancing drugs should be taken seriously no matter when or where.
"We'll have to order the proper material and resources to conduct the tests" Daniel starts but James shakes his head.
"I've already ordered everything, the resources will be coming in tomorrow. Furthermore, I've arranged for appointments and meetings with all the fighters to do the test so that it wouldn't overload you" James announces and Daniel is glad that the redhead had been considerate enough not to dump any more admin stuff onto him.
"Alright, if everything's been arranged for I'll just have to double-check and go through everything" Daniel agrees before going back to skimming the papers.
As he was reading the information there were a couple that stood out. There were another couple of names from Jae Won High that were new and had signed up, Daniel had no clue if Vasco or Zack had any idea who these people were. Another note Daniel took was that there were a hell of a lot more Workers affiliates this time round. The first time round when Daniel had been dealing with the Tournament it was Big Deal.
"What's with this highlighted name?" Daniel asked as he skimmed one name under the Workers affiliate, it was in bold and highlighted a bright neon pink.
"Ah yes, NO.1" James looked slightly apprehensive as he spoke. "You won't need to do a physical for him, Eugene requested that he didn't need one from us and had his own personal Doctors will assess him" James responds and Daniel frowns.
The highlighted line was named No.1?
"That's strange, you don't think he's doing this for any other particular reasons?" Daniel prods at the topic.
"What are you suggesting, Doctor?" James tilts his head, listening patiently.
"This is Worker's way of sending in someone under the radar in the hopes of cheating and ultimately winning? I want to assume that as a VIP, Chairman Eugene knows of the true prize of what happens when someone wins against a Founder?" Daniel questions and although James looks caught off guard by the statement he doesn't refrain from barking out a laugh.
"Gun told you!" He chuckles but it was merely a statement, not an accusation. "Well no, Eugene doesn't know what the real prize for defeating one of us is but he's smart and he's been trying to become a main shareholder for years. Charles Choi, the Founders and the other VIPs are all Shareholders. Charles owns About 35%, the other Founders and I collectively own 30%, the VIPs are at 5% and other private and public shareholders own the rest" James shares and Daniel didn't know if he should be listening to the confidential information.
"5% is quite little" Daniel remarks.
"In a sense yes but we are still making millions a month alone" At that simple statement Daniel couldn't stop his eyes from bulging. "Most of the money goes back into the CC, into employees, the building and its materials, resources, insurance, benefactors, hospital and damage fees as well as paying our taxes. But anyway, that's beside the point, the point is that our VIPs Neko, Vivi and Eugene are all in an alliance together, well mainly it's the two ladies under him which grants them the ability to call themselves affiliates under the name Workers" James continues and Daniel nods.
"They're business partners which means technically they have 15% in terms of shares…that's still not enough to become the main shareholder or anything" Daniel concludes and James nods.
"You're right but Euegene is a greedy and ambitious businessman. For years he's been attempting to push forward the notion that he could be a better owner of the CC and has been trying to overthrow Charles off that throne because the Chairman hasn't been around to invest himself nearly as much as Eugene would. Of course, I know that has nothing to do with him being good at the role and everything to do with the amount of money he thinks he can make. He's been forming alliances and contracts with other smaller shareholders outside of Charles and us Founders. He's been talking to people like The White Tiger Alliance and One MCN, security and streaming corporations, all in the hopes of convincing them to join his group" The way James had been informing Daniel of what was going on between him and the VIPs sounded more like a boring bedtime story than Eugene trying to stage a coup to steal everything from the man.
For effect, he even yawned.
"Then all these Workers members that are joining this Tournament, it's not just a coincidence…it's because he's finally making his move. Is he confident that his people will win? But wait, you said he doesn't know that the person who defeats one of you guys takes over the role, how would Eugene know that he gains anything from winning the Tournament?" Daniel backtracks.
"None of us may have told him but he's smart and too perceptive. I'm sure he has an idea of the true prize" James shrugs.
"Then isn't it more imperative that I check over this 'No.1' fighter? What if he's the one taking drugs? Eugene could make sure that the Doctor that's taking care of the fighter could lie about the drug test results" Daniel points out and James remains quiet. It takes a moment for Daniel to interpret the silence but once he does he gapes. "He is, isn't he? You know exactly who this fighter is and you're willing to let them participate…but why? Do you want Eugene to take over?" Daniel frowns, confusion piling up in his mind as he attempts to comprehend what is going on.
"Absolutely not. I don't think there is any bright side to Eugene turning the CC into just another business exploit of his which is why I'm allowing him to do as he pleases. Let him send all the fighters that he can, let him think that he can overwhelm us because at the end of the day, it won't be Gun, Goo or me who stops him. It will be the other crews and that's just something he's going to have to learn first hand" James laughs. "Workers who formed to fulfil Eugene's desires and ambition vs the other crews that were formed from hard work, bloodshed and tears? Who's motivation is vengeance, justice and heart?" There was admiration in his voice.
Daniel was surprised by the reaction and outcome. James was a hard person to read and never did he think that his opinion of the crews would be something as positive as admiration. He was the original individual who was tasked to take down the crews, to overthrow the era of delinquents and gangs so the Doctor always thought the man found the task to be tiring and tedious. Yet he wasn't.
"You're different to what I thought you were" Daniel mumbles and James cracks a soft smile.
"Don't get me wrong, gangs and crews will always be just as they are but there is a humanity behind them. I just hope most of them realise that their purpose in life isn't just to beat others up, commit crimes and to piss around in their so-called territories like dogs. As you have mentioned before, the purpose of the CC is to clean up Seoul and cleaning them up is what we're doing. They'll realise it eventually" James states evenly, slight melancholy in his voice.
"They won't if Eugene takes over" Daniel mentions but James just shakes his head.
"Even if a Worker's member wins and challenges one of us, we wouldn't dare lose for the sake of losing" James nudges Daniel on the shoulder.
"So Eugene didn't find it strange at all that he was allowed to present this many Worker members and one new guy that doesn't need to be checked by me without you batting so much as an eye?" He raises a brow but the redhead smiles.
"Of course not, in return for granting him this favour and blind eye he's agreed to allow the CC to use his private-use first responders in case of any emergencies from now on"
Gun had mentioned this before. Huh, so James had his own plans as well.
"You'll be meeting the CEO of the first responders sometime during the week. Be careful around him, I've heard he can be quite intimidating" James pushes himself off the desk, making his way to the door.
"Oh please, If I can handle Gun then no one else could ever be as intimidating" Daniel calls and James laughs. Watching the Founder retreating, Daniel couldn't help opening his drawer to grab something before calling out. "Hey, James!"
The redhead turns around and manages to catch the small item that Daniel had thrown at him. Raising a brow, he opens his hand to see a milk candy.
"Thanks for the heads up and information!" He calls truthfully and the redhead stares for a moment longer before nodding.
"Good luck, Doctor"
.
.
.
Going through the appointments and checkups was long and repetitive. Jay was present as well, providing a helping hand and going through his list of patients that Daniel had split between the two. A Lot of the individuals that they had gone through were foreigners, mainly from China and Japan but there were the occasional individuals from the US which was concerning since every one of them was perfectly healthy and built to the brim of human perfection in terms of their body and muscles. All of them had also passed their urinal drug test thankfully.
"I don't understand how people can get such nice and big muscles" Daniel rants to Jay who smiles softly as he listens, disposing of his prior gloves and going to grab his water bottle to take a sip of.
They had just finished with assessing two guys in fancy Japanese masks and were waiting for the next two to show up for their appointment.
"No seriously Jay, I've been working out for a long time and I've been training a lot more recently yet I still can't get rid of some of the pudge that's around my stomach and hips. It's not as if I'm slacking during those moments, I push myself hard and yet I'm still this" He points to his slim form.
It wasn't that he was devoided of muscles, everyone knew that at this point that he wasn't just a simple Doctor. There were moments when he would wear fitted clothes or when he would take off his coat, there were lean muscles present, they just weren't big and prominent.
"What the hell am I doing wrong?" Daniel sighs as he unwraps a candy wrapper to indulge himself as he sulks.
Jay watches before turning to look at the bin in the room to see packets of snacks, convenience store food and takeout. The blonde in turn merely shrugs before reaching out to pat Daniel's back in comfort.
"The hell are you doing here?!" A voice shouts from outside the room.
"Me? What the hell are YOU doing here? Following me, are you?" Another voice retorts.
Turning to look at each other, Daniel and Jay shrug before standing and walking over to investigate. Pulling open the door, they were met with the sight of three people, two guys and a girl.
One man towered over the other but the shorter guy didn't seem to give a shit as he snarled right back.
"You know, I thought this…rivalry? Hatred? Had died out after years of being in the same school and vicinity yet I see you're both dumb as always" The tall blonde girl mutters in the background.
"Shut the fuck up, bitch!" The larger man growls.
"Don't fucking speak to her you ugly gorilla" "What was that you dumb monkey?" The two bicker, flinging insults and slurs around as if they held no weight.
Daniel would have told them off. He would have shouted at them to leave if they were going to continue whatever it was they were doing but he was in too much shock. It had been years and still he could feel his nervousness build. Anxiety courses through his blood before Jay nudges him gently. He snaps out of his thoughts but even the blonde could tell that something was wrong.
Having had enough of the two, Jay lifted a hand and slammed it against the wall, the loud BANG that resounded around the open area was enough to make everyone jump. He glares at the two making the noise whereas everyone merely stares back.
It takes a moment before the shorter guy with the sunglasses snaps out of stupor.
"What the hell? You're that guy that used to be in the Fashion Department, aren't you?" He accessed, pointing a finger straight at Jay. "Oi piggy, you remember him right? You transferred a couple months before he left" He addresses the larger man.
"The fuck? Who the hell do you think you're calling Piggy?" The man sneers but he does squint his eyes at Jay as if trying to remember him. "I don't remember useless extras and I definitely couldn't care less about pretty boys like him" He sneers.
Piggy.
God, it is him.
Daniel cringes internally at the name-calling and insults. Logan Lee. He had seen the name in the list but he had assumed it wouldn't be the same guy that had tormented him during his early educational years. The same guy who probably would have continued bullying him if he had stayed at the public school and never been taken in by his uncle. There were loads of people named Logan, why did it have to be this particular Logan that was going to be fighting in the CC?
Keeping his composure, Daniel clears his throat which garners everyone's attention.
"You both must be my next appointment for the CC medical checkup. Vin Jin and Logan Lee" Daniel states evenly, not allowing his eyes to linger on Logan's irritated form for too long. "Please come in, and try not to make too much noise or hassle. Let's get this done quickly so you boys can get out of here" He urges.
The two men turn to look at each other before grunting in unison as they approach the door.
"Doctor, is it alright for me to come in or would you prefer I wait outside?" The blonde female asks.
"If you're here with one of the patients then it's fine for you to come in" Daniel starts but Vin Jin was quick to whine about it.
"Mary it's fine, you don't have to come in and watch me like some mother hen. I can talk to the Doctor and go through this appointment by myself. In fact, you didn't even need to come with me here today" Vin Jin informs and the female, Mary, merely scowls.
"Oi, I'm not the one being an idiot by joining the CC despite being a crimin-" She cut herself off, giving Vin Jin a meaningful look before speaking again. "Look all I know is you're being stupid about this. I'm only here so you don't make a fool of yourself" Mary hisses, almost sneering at the male who swallowed thickly before crossing his arms.
"Whatever" He mumbles.
"Doctor, I can wait out here but if that idiot does anything to piss you off you have my express permission to hit him" Mary smiles before giving a thumbs up.
Daniel nods and closes the door once the two patients are inside.
"Alright, you're both here to do the same checkup at the same time simply because there are too many fighters to get through to have separate appointment times. Nurse Hong will be handling Mr Lee and I will work with you Mr-" "Dude just call me Vin Jin. None of that 'Mr' bullshit" Vin Jin waves off as Logan snickers.
"Alright then, Vin Jin it is. Well for the first bit of this test, I'd like for the both of you to answer me honestly. Have either of you consumed or been exposed to any drugs or steroids in the last month or so?" Daniel asks.
He'd get the difficult part out of the way.
"No" Vin Jin answers.
"Neither" Logan surprisingly agrees.
"How about alcohol? I understand that both of you are still under the age limit but please answer truthfully. Unless there is anything that is against the law there is still patient-doctor confidentiality in place between us" Daniel continues. Vin Jin shakes his head but this time Logan hesitates.
"I was drinking a couple of nights ago" He replies and Daniel nods and notes that down before walking to his desk to grab a few items before thrusting them to the two.
"Alright, please take these urine cups and head to the bathroom. I've labelled the cups with your names so do what you must and return for the rest of the examination" The two were slightly baffled by the cups but nodded.
The rest of the examination goes by quickly enough with Daniel drawing the curtains around him and Vin Jin to give them some privacy from Logan and Jay. There were the occasional quips from the two at each other, filled with annoyance and irritation rather than any pure sort of hatred. Vin Jin wasn't too bad, he insisted on keeping his glasses on the entire time but other than that there wasn't a snarky remark towards Daniel. On the other hand, Logan occasionally gave Jay a hard time.
"Watch where you put your hands, you might be a nurse and you might be pretty but I don't swing that way" Logan grunts for the third time. Daniel was about to pipe up when it was Vin Jin who spoke.
"Dude, just let him do his job so he can stop touching you already. No need to be so bitchy about it and besides, as if he'd go for someone like you in the first place" He calls.
"Oi, I don't want to hear any sort of reprimanding from the person who won't even shed his sunglasses off, fucking moron" Logan replies.
"Boys, let's behave. We're almost done" Daniel advises and they quiet down again.
Daniel was nearing the end of his examination but he did need to do an eye test but to do that the man would have to take off his sunglasses.
"Vin Jin, I need you to take off the glasses for the eye test part. It will only be brief and it will only be just you and me. Can you do that for me?" Daniel requests and the other looks reluctant.
He had gone stiff at the words, his shoulders rising as he stared wordlessly at the floor. So the sunglasses were a sensitive spot for him…interesting. Daniel knows several people who wear sunglasses, ranging from Gun to James. Hell even Goo indulged in it sometimes to match his fellow Founders. But this felt different, even different to when Jay hides his eyes under his hair.
"It's a part of regulation and protocols" Daniel hums quietly to Vin Jin. "I promise I won't laugh or judge you" He adds and this time the male sighs.
"Fuck Zack and fuck Vasco for making the CC seem glorious. Tch, I should've never been egged on by them" He mumbles and Daniel raises a brow at the words.
Slowly Vin Jin reaches up and pulls off his sunglasses swiftly, as he does so his chin-length hair falls around his face. It took a moment for Daniel to see what the taller man was trying to hide but once he lifted his face the Doctor couldn't help but gasp softly.
Instinctively Vin Jin tenses again, going to pull away and moving to put his glasses back on but Daniel stops him in his tracks. He couldn't help himself as he reached out to tentatively grasp the man by the jaw, lifting him face to face as he stared into the man's unique eyes.
Vin Jin stares back into Daniel's gaze, both of them wide-eyed.
"Amazing" Daniel whispers. "You have polycoria" He states.
Daniel had never met anyone with the condition but then again it was rare. Daniel traces Vin Jin's cheekbone with his right thumb, simply enthralled by the sight of the dual silver pupils that rested in the left eye.
"O-Oi, Doctor the hell are you doing?" Vin Jin asks heatedly but there is no bite in his tone, merely slight embarrassment and confusion. Daniel could feel the skin under his hands become warm but the taller one doesn't move.
"I'm intrigued, is your eyesight and visibility affected in this eye?" Daniel inquires as he leans in closer to observe.
"Yes, my vision is blurry in that eye" Vin Jin hisses, his eyes flickering around nervously. What happened to the cocky and arrogant man from before?
"Did you get it from an injury or was this from birth?" Daniel continues to inspect, gently turning Vin Jin's face from side to side before stepping away and smiling.
"Birth" Vin Jin grunts, suddenly sour. "Oi, you don't have to talk like you're in awe. I know it's freaky" He hisses, eyes flickering to the other side of the curtain in case it was going to be pulled open any minute but Logan and Jay sounded occupied with themselves.
"But I am in awe, I've never seen this in person before, only ever in textbooks and online" Daniel replies before patting the man's shoulder. "And I don't think it's weird, if anything it's cool and unique" He compliments before turning back to do the rest of the test.
"Tch, Vasco was right. The Doctor of the CC is…different" Vin Jin grunts before following along with the test.
It doesn't take much longer and with the sunglasses back in place, Daniel draws back the curtains to go and check on the urinal tests. Both passed.
"Alright, everything seems to be in order for you boys so you're free to head off. Good luck with the tournament" Daniel smiles at the two.
Vin Jin grunts before moving first, he opens the door and Mary who had been waiting immediately rushes towards him.
"Everything good?" She asks and he simply grunts. They were gone within moments.
Logan takes another minute to collect his jacket. He nods at Jay before turning to look at Daniel, his gaze narrowing in a way that feels predatory.
"Hey Doc, do I know you from somewhere?" Logan asks. "I feel like I've seen you before?" He questions and Daniel tenses.
Rubbing the back of his head he simply shakes his head and smiles.
"I don't believe so, perhaps you saw me from a previous CC stream" He shrugs and Logan grunts. "Or maybe I just have one of those faces" He adds with a laugh and the larger man's annoyance intensifies.
"Tch" With that he turns to leave.
As he passes through the door, someone else knocks.
"Hello, are you two free now?" Goo mischievous smile was on his lip as he entered. "Also wow, the guy that just left was huge and intense. Who was that?" he questions.
"Logan Lee, a new contestant to the CC tournament that's coming up" Daniel explains as he asks Jay to put the stuff away. That should have been the last appointment for the day anyway.
"Oh cool, well anyways are you two done? I have someone for you guys to meet, James instructed me to introduce you guys before the tournament in case you blew up at one of us again for not being responsible" Goo explains and Daniel sighs.
Gun was never going to let him live down that rant, was he? He'd even gone around telling the other Founders too.
"Sure, we've got time now" Daniel nods and the blonde's grin brightens even further as he steps completely into the room and ushers another person in. Daniel raises his brow at the handsome man who follows Goo.
Tall, broad shoulders, muscular and an intimidating figure. Short, dyed blonde hair, dark yet warm skin, silver earrings pierced in both ears and wearing a designer outfit. The black dress shirt and slacks with the contrasting gold-coloured vest were screaming luxury and style, and if it wasn't the branded watch wrapped around his wrist certainly did.
"Everyone this is Taejin Cheon, CEO of the private-use first responders that Eugene kindly connected us with. Taejin, this is our current resident Doctor Daniel Park and Nurse Jay Hong" Goo introduces.
Taejin stepped forward, a hand outstretched and Daniel was also quick to move, accepting the handshake.
"It's a pleasure to meet you" Daniel states, noting how firm as well as how large the hand was compared to his own.
"The pleasure is mine, I look forward to working alongside someone as renowned as you" The man states, strictly professional as he lets go and greets Jay with his own handshake before letting go.
"I hardly think I'm qualified to be called renowned" Daniel replies easily enough but the CEO lets out an amused yet airy chuckle.
"You're popular within the CC, you have many fans and the crowds are enraptured by you and your performance" He comments and Daniel frowns.
"Well, it is my job" Daniel shrugs.
"Give yourself more credit, Doc. No need to be humble" Goo encourages before slapping a hand on Taejin's shoulder. "Anyways, Taejin and a couple of people from his team will be present during the tournament. They may act as private-use but I've been assured by Eugene, James and of course, Taejin himself that they are qualified to act as emergency medical first responders as well as transport any patients that are critically injured to the hospital quickly and efficiently" Goo explains and Daniel nods.
"That's good to hear" Daniel nods as he turns back to trail his eyes up and down Taejin's form. If Goo hadn't introduced them, Daniel was sure that he'd mistake the man for a VIP rather than the CEO of the first responder's company. A cough brings Daniel's attention back to the man's face but once he does he can't help the burn of shame. Judging by the man's smirk on his lips, he had caught Daniel staring.
"Um…would you like a tour of the facility? I'm sure it's important for the person that may be transporting patients in and out of the CC to know where all the exits and entrances are" Daniel quickly offers, trying to keep down the flush that was growing on his face.
"Uh, no need. I already gave him one before we got here" Goo answers and when Daniel looks to the Founder the elder is giving him a sceptical look. His eyes flash between Daniel and Taejin before raising a brow. "But I mean, if you wanna give him another tour, be my guess" He snorts and Daniel shakes his head.
"No, it's not needed then" Daniel sighs.
"If you don't mind I would prefer a tour of the medical set-up as well as the medical room. I hear there's even a surgical room that's been prepped and ready for use. Whilst I'm not qualified to perform any surgeries I am well adept in basic medical practice and as a first responder, it will be my job to help you out. It would be beneficial for me to learn the set-up, layout and procedures" Taejin was quick to intervene and the occupants in the room seemed to agree.
"Well if that's the case I'll leave Mr CEO here in your capable hands Doctor Park. I unfortunately have to run to a meeting" Goo states and Daniel waves him off before the room is left with only Jay, Taejin and himself.
"Jay, you've had a long day. Thank you for helping me out, I'll see you tomorrow for the rest of the appointments" Daniel dismisses and the silent blonde pauses, looking conflicted as he gestures to Taejin.
"..."
"No, it's okay. You're not obligated to stay" Daniel smiles as he nudges the nurse. "I'll be okay" He reassures and the nurse reluctantly nods before moving to pack his things. With one last look at Taejin and Daniel, the nurse waves goodbye, leaving the two in the room.
"I guess it's time for the tour" Taejin smiles and Daniel nods.
The Doctor starts to explain the contents of the room and the First Responder listens intently, occasionally asking questions where necessary. When they leave the medical room Daniel makes sure to point out the restrooms along the way to the cafeteria.
"So anyone can eat here for dirt cheap?" Taejin questions as he looks at the menu for the day.
"Well, for the members which includes staff and fighters it's cheaper, the general public has limited access to this place but if they do eat here it's more expensive" Daniel answers as he sends the staff, which includes Jihyeon, a friendly wave. "The First Responder team should be entitled to getting the discounted price" He adds and the CEO grunts in affirmation.
They make their way down to the Arena where the Medical set-up was supposed to be. Most of the materials were packed away but Daniel went over to what the structure was supposed to be like anyway.
"How many first responders will be here anyway? Surely as the CEO you don't have an obligation to be here," Daniel inquires but Taejin shakes his head.
"I'll be here with you, even if I'm the CEO it's my responsibility and duty to work with my people and ensure they are doing things properly. Furthermore, I'm more of a hands-on kind of guy" Taejin made sure to puncture those last couple of words with a tinge of sultriness as he watched Daniel intently. "We'll have two paramedic vehicles on standby, two guys out and ready to drive. Inside here will be me along with a couple of others"
That was going to be…a lot of people in the setup area. Daniel presses his lips into a thin line, not angry but not exactly pleased with the outcome.
"Something wrong?" Taejin asks.
"I'm just thinking about efficiency and how packed this area is going to be, especially on the first day of the tournament. We've got a lot of people participating, I'd even go as far as to say we've got nearly a hundred fighters in the ring and more than a few of them at a time will be coming in for medical assistance. There will only be so many that my team and I can handle so I can already tell that there will be a backlog of patients" Daniel visualises the night and chaos that was ensured to occur.
With the staff, the machinery and equipment in place, participants and now the first responders there wasn't going to be any room to breathe much less move around quickly. Someone was going to either end up tripping over or patients were going to have to sit on the floor. Both were inadequate solutions and outcomes.
"How about we expand the area into the hall?" Taejin suggests.
"In the risk of an evacuation that's even more dangerous. We'd be blocking the hallway to an exit" Daniel shakes his head.
"Then how about these rooms nearby" Taejin points to the room directly opposite of the medical set-up, just across from the hall. "Are they in use or can we convert them into potential spaces where patients can stay without blocking the way?"
Going over to the room and unlocking the door, Daniel peers inside to see that it is storage space. If Daniel got permission to clear the rooms then surely he could use them as waiting rooms or something like that. Pulling out his phone he snaps a quick photo and shoots a message to James about using the room.
He didn't have to wait long for a response. The Founder replies quickly with a simple 'Sure, have the security team help you' and Daniel gives the message a thumbs up before following through.
"James said yes" Daniel sighs before rolling his shoulder in a warming-up motion. "Seems like more work has been piled onto my plate. I'm going to call a couple of the security guys to help move the stuff out of this room. I'm sorry that your tour has to end so abruptly but other than here there isn't any other place for me to show you" He tells the darker-skinned man who nods.
"That's fine, I've seen all I needed to see. Would you like for me to stay and help you out?" Taejin asks and Daniel's brows shoot upwards.
He didn't think that a man who had the title of CEO would stay around to help with labour work but then again, Taejin did say he was a 'hands-on' kind of guy.
"You don't have to" Daniel adds just in case Taejin's words were only spoken out of kindness and obligation.
"I'd be more than happy to stick around, what better way to get to know a co-worker than working with them?" Taejin smirks and Daniel nods in agreement before getting to work.
Most of the storage inside the room was dusty, old furniture or useless material. Most of it was thrown out, what little stuff that was salvageable were placed in another room. The security and Taejin did most of the heavy lifting, even when Daniel insisted on helping out they would wave him off and ask him to direct them instead. It was quick work moving the stuff, what took longer was cleaning the dust and cobwebs that had collected in the room. Daniel didn't fuss over the task, he'd complain to Gun about the task later on but for now, he needed to focus on getting it done quickly.
Taejin doesn't complain either, even when his nose wrinkles at the sight and smell or when he pulls back in disgust as he rushes to bin dirty rags. He does however laugh when Daniel lets out a yelp of surprise when a roach scuttles across the floor. The Doctor merely shoots the First Responder a dirty look but it immediately falls off his face when the roach opens its wings and shoots itself across the room and directly at the blonde. The scream that falls out from Taejin's mouth as well as the look of horror has Daniel in tears.
The tears of mirth eventually convert into tears of fear as the roach circles back towards him.
Eventually after Daniel, Taejin and several security members were chased around and had finished screaming bloody murder over the ugly bugs one of the older cleaning ladies comes by to investigate the noise. With the strength and bravery that only an ajumma could embody, she cleans the room efficiently, getting rid of all the crawly critters without so much as batting an eye before leaving to go clean another room.
Daniel promises to treat her to food the next time he sees the cleaner before moving on to filling the room with the relevant furniture. Taejin helps by suggesting how to use the space effectively before eventually they finish.
"Fuck, I'm going to go to bed thinking about roaches tonight" Taejin shivers in disgust and Daniel nods in agreement.
"That's gotta have broken a couple of occupational safety and health standards" Daniel mumbles as he wipes the sweat off his forehead before grinning at the CEO. "Thanks for helping me out today, I do apologise that it turned out to be such a traumatising experience" He laughs but Taejin shakes his head.
"Nothing is better than bonding over trauma" He jokes and Daniel couldn't help but agree.
The CEO had loosened up throughout the whole ordeal. The Doctor expected the man to be mean and rude, coming to this assumption from how intimidating he had been when Goo had introduced them. Thankfully he had been wrong, Taejin was…alright.
"So just to go over it again, you'll be in the medical set up area as a first response to the injuries, half the volunteers" "They're casual employees now" "Half of your team will be in here to help you, a quarter will be in the new waiting room to monitor patients and the last quarter along with Nurse Hong will be back at the actual medical room" Taejin summarises and Daniel nods.
"Nurse Hong and his group will tend to the patients that need longer bed rest, those patients won't be able to stay here due to the limited space so they'll be moved there. As for you and the other first responders, you'll be working here with me" Daniel explains and Taejin frowns.
"You'll all be spread pretty thin, especially since you stated that there would be a lot of fighters. Are you sure you don't need another Doctor on hand?" Taejin questions and Daniel falters.
"I can handle it" Daniel crosses his arms but the CEO shakes his head.
"It's not about whether you can handle it or not, I'm sure you can but it's a matter of helping the patients isn't it? Having another Doctor on hand would be useful and relieve some of the stress that will be on everyone's shoulders. Moreover, it's not as if the CC is getting any smaller or any less popular, the amount of injuries isn't going to decrease either" Taejin reasons and Daniel relents that they were good points.
Letting out a sigh the Doctor nods.
"I'll see if I can get another Doctor here for the Tournament days"
Taejin nods approvingly.
"Well then, It's late now and I've overstayed my welcome. I'll get going now and I'll contact you if there are any further questions I have" Taejin announces. "Otherwise, I'll see you on the first day of the tournament, Doctor Park"
"Thank you for coming and helping out, I'll see you then Mr Cheon"

TOURNAMENT DAY 1
"What the fuck did you do?" Was spat out before Daniel could even process who was standing in front of him. It was too early on a Friday morning for the Doctor to deal with this problem.
After Daniel's talk with Taejin over a week ago he had asked Jinyoung if there was anyone available that could specifically help out at the CC during tournament times and his uncle had responded with a 'I'll send someone' without specifying who.
Now it was tournament day and here standing in front of Daniel was tall, broad-shouldered, with dark brown hair and a scowl etched onto his face was his bully.
"Collin Hyung" Daniel greets, the hand that wasn't around his coffee was clenched tightly.
"You brat, you did something, didn't you? What the fuck did you say to Director Park to get him to send me to this shit hole?!" Collin sneers as he marches right up into Daniel's space, glare intensifying as he uses his height to try and intimidate the younger.
"I asked for another Doctor to help out at the CC for the time being, I didn't specifically ask for you" Daniel retorts, grimacing as he tries to step back.
"Bullshit, this is payback isn't it?" Collin interrogates and Daniel laughs mirthlessly.
"You think I want to spend the next three days working alongside you in a place like this? Do you think I'd do something stupid like that? Get over yourself" Daniel replies, staring up at the man with a bored gaze.
"The hell is with your attitude? Have you gotten cockier since you started working here?" Collin shoves Daniel back or at least attempts to only to realise that the shorter man hasn't moved an inch. "Tch, it doesn't matter if your personality has changed or if you've grown a backbone. You're still a shit Doctor with an even shittier skill set. Tell me, Daniel Park, have you been able to get into the operating room at all recently without almost wetting your pants?" He pushes down on all of Daniel's nerves.
Daniel could only match Collin's glare, veins in his neck bulging as he held himself back from shoving the man back.
"Oh right, you were sent here so you could get away from the operating rooms" Collin laughs. "Because even your uncle knows how useless you are" he insults before pulling back to give Daniel a disdainful look.
There was a moment of silence between the two. A moment where Collin dared to look smug about his words and a moment where Daniel could only swallow the words he'd been thrown before attempting to adjust himself.
"Look, Collin" Daniel's body was tense as he spoke. "It doesn't matter if you hate me, you can insult me all you want but it's not getting you out of here. Director Park asked you to come here and you're here now which means for the next three days you'll be working here…alongside me" Daniel spits out to show that he wasn't pleased with the arrangement either.
"I didn't ask for you and you didn't ask for this but now we have to deal with it. So, let's deal with it and for the sake of the patients and our professionalism let's keep this civil" He continues to say.
Collin snorts at the words before crossing his arms.
"Three days, that's all it is" Daniel makes a show of holding up three fingers. "Then you can go back to working at SNMC and forget about my existence, okay?" It was reasonable. Daniel wasn't asking the other Doctor to be his friend, hell he wasn't even asking him to be nice, just civil. Just so they could do their jobs and then go their separate ways afterwards.
Collin makes a show of clicking his tongue in annoyance before thinking the words over, eventually with an air of reluctance he nods and agrees.
"Show me how you've arranged the place, I need to make sure you haven't fucked things up" Collin states, he wasn't outwardly agreeing but his acceptance to work was enough for Daniel.
"I haven't fucked up anything" Daniel grunts but he turns around to give the Doctor a tour anyways.
Daniel could already feel a headache growing.
