Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Embarrassment
As it was already evening, Yuki was granted temporary stay in the guard post. There were even two small rooms side by side.
He glanced one last time at the moonlit night before heading into his quarter to rest. Once inside, he morphed back into his dragon form, finding it more comfortable for recovery and conserving energy.
Tonight, he would not attempt any more fusion. He needed to stabilize after the recent transformation. This night, he would simply rest.
But he would not be careless like the night before. Even in half-sleep, he kept his senses alert—no matter how exhausting it was.
The night gradually deepened, accompanied by cold winds howling like a distant storm.
The couple, who had been on guard duty until midnight, finally returned to their own quarters, seeking shelter from the cold.
Yuki, still alert, noticed their presence in the adjacent room.
He could hear their voices clearly through the thin walls.
But to his disappointment, they weren't speaking any secrets, nor plotting to harm him.
What he heard instead... was something obscene.
"Wait, John, not tonight. That boy is in the next room. He might hear us."
"Come on, sweetheart. You have been dodging all week with excuses. He is probably asleep. He looked completely exhausted. Just this once, let me have my reward."
"Ah... wait... not so fast, John."
Paah!
"Ahn... you're being rough again."
"Heh, I knew you liked it rough. Just try not to be too loud. We are not alone, remember?"
Paah. Paah. Paah.
Yuki's eyes opened wide. His tail twitched in disbelief.
He rolled over on the small mattress and groaned quietly, pressing his claws to his head.
"I am awake, you degenerate couple..." he muttered under his breath.
The sounds didn't stop. Slaps, gasps, squishy rhythms. It was like being stuck in an endless nightmare of awkward adult noises.
For a young dragon with a soul that was still mentally a virgin, it was too much to handle.
By the time morning came, Yuki was lying with eyes blank, expression lifeless.
Not from battle, not from trauma, not from the hollows.
Just embarrassment. Pure embarrassment.
He muttered bitterly, "Thank the stars my body's not mature yet. If it were, I'd have soaked the bed."
Morning.
Warm and Golden sunlight streamed through the windows. Birds didn't chirp, but the air felt slightly more peaceful. Yuki slowly opened his eyes, his entire expression still hollow.
He had not slept. Not really.
With a long sigh, he morphed back into his human form, stretched out his limbs, then walked out of the room rubbing his eyes.
The door to the next room creaked open almost at the same time.
John stepped out, humming lightly as if nothing happened, shirt half-buttoned and a towel slung over his shoulder.
"Morning, kid. Did you sleep well?"
Yuki stared blankly. "No."
"Huh? Why not?"
A moment later, Maki walked out, cheeks lightly flushed. She didn't look him in the eyes.
"Ah... good morning, Yuki."
"Morning..." Yuki replied, but his tone was that of a man who had seen too much.
An awkward silence followed.
Yuki finally coughed into his fist and muttered, "The walls are very... thin here."
John froze. Maki's eyes widened in panic.
"Oh— I mean— you heard...?"
Yuki gave a deadpan nod. "Everything."
John looked away, scratching the back of his head with a sheepish smile. "Well... adults need stress relief too, you know?"
Maki covered her face in embarrassment. "John, I told you to wait..."
"I am traumatized," Yuki said dramatically, turning away.
"No, wait—" Maki tried to speak, but Yuki had already walked off.
"Breakfast better be worth the suffering," he called over his shoulder.
Behind him, the couple exchanged a glance and sighed in unison.
"Sigh, we should've really kept it down."
Ignoring their awkward moment, Yuki strolled around with cautious steps. On his right lay an open flatland, and on his left he could see some housing in the distance. Possibly, more humans lived there.
He would probably be taken there soon. But what he truly needed now was strength. Only with sufficient power could he explore this world to his heart's content.
And to grow stronger, he had to hunt magical creatures, extract and fuse them. Slowly, steadily.
His gaze involuntarily turned north, toward a towering mountain range whose peaks looked like they pierced the heavens. The world was breathtaking. Why wouldn't it be?
It was a mythological world after all. Compared to Earth, it was larger, untouched by the destructive hand of science.
Still, he had seen that magical rifle. Whether it was a mystical treasure or human-crafted weapon, he couldn't be sure. If he had to guess, this world resembled a medieval era, only with powerful magical elements woven into its society and landscape.
There were originally seven continents, Chester had said. But after the Apocalypse, everything changed. He didn't have a proper understanding of the current state, let alone a map.
How he would take his next steps would all depend on the knowledge he could gather from here.
As he quietly pondered his next step with a hand on his chin, Yuki had unknowingly wandered far from John and Maki's guard post.
Up ahead was another outpost, where several people in military uniforms stood. Some were laughing and smoking cigars, while others kept watch with sharp eyes.
The moment Yuki noticed them, he turned back at once. He didn't want to interact with them right now—especially if they were stricter than John and Maki. They might start asking too many questions, and if things went wrong, his cover as a human could be blown.
However, when he looked behind to retrace his steps, he noticed the path had curved and narrowed. On either side were steep cliffs that looked like open jaws of hell. One wrong move, and he could plummet to his death.
He exhaled a sharp breath, then cautiously moved forward along the narrow trail. It was strange; when he was deep in thought earlier, his body hadn't sensed any fear at all. Almost as if he had entered a state of temporary fear immunity.
Shaking off the thought, he returned to the original guard post, where a long-awaited breakfast was waiting for him.
