The morning sun peeked weakly through the clouds, barely enough to melt the frost clinging to the trees. Ethan stretched, the cold biting at his fingers even through the gloves, and looked over at Princess Anna and Kristoff, who were packing up their makeshift camp.
They were further up the mountain now. The pine trees around them had grown thicker, the snow deeper. It had been two days since they'd set out from Arendelle, and though progress was slow, they were getting closer to Elsa's last known location. The trail had grown colder—both literally and metaphorically—but Anna was determined. And Ethan couldn't help but admire that.
"Come on," Anna said, tightening her cloak. "If we keep heading up, we'll reach the North Mountain by nightfall."
Kristoff nodded, tugging Sven's reins. "If we don't fall off a cliff first."
Ethan chuckled and was about to speak when something caught his attention: a soft humming, almost like someone singing. It was coming from just around the snowy ridge ahead.
"Wait," he said, raising a hand. "Do you hear that?"
The group fell silent. A faint, cheerful voice drifted toward them, oddly high-pitched and utterly carefree.
🎶 "Winter's a good time to stay in and cuddle... But put me in summer and I'll be a..." 🎶
They turned the corner, and Ethan blinked.
Standing there in the snow was a talking snowman. A literal snowman—three perfectly round snowballs stacked together, twig arms, a carrot nose, and a big goofy grin stretched across his face. His coal eyes sparkled with delight as he danced around.
"Hello!" the snowman said with a wide wave of his twiggy arms. "I'm Olaf! And I like warm hugs!"
Ethan stared, dumbfounded.
"...What."
Anna's eyes lit up with recognition. "Olaf?!"
The snowman turned, tilting his head. "Do I know you?"
"I'm Anna. I think Elsa made you," she said gently, stepping forward with curiosity.
Olaf blinked, then gasped. "Elsa! That name sounds... warm! That's amazing! She made me? Wow! That makes so much sense. I've been wondering why I suddenly existed."
Kristoff blinked. "Wait, wait. This thing's alive?"
"Snowman," Olaf corrected, placing a twig hand on his nonexistent hip. "And yes, I am very much alive. And incredibly sturdy, thank you."
Ethan finally spoke. "You're… sentient. That's some serious magic."
Olaf turned to him, looking him over. "Whoa. You're tall. Like, really tall. Are you made of snow too?"
"No," Ethan muttered. "Definitely not."
Kristoff rubbed the back of his neck. "Okay, magical talking snowman. Got it. Normal day."
Anna smiled and knelt down next to Olaf. "Do you remember anything else?"
"I remember dancing in a dream," Olaf said, twirling a bit and kicking up some snow. "And I dream of summer! Ohhh, how I'd love to feel the sand between my... uh… snow."
Ethan looked at Anna and muttered, "This is... adorable and concerning at the same time."
Anna stifled a giggle. "He's harmless."
"And highly flammable," Kristoff added. "I mean, he wants summer."
"I don't know what that is," Olaf said cheerfully, "but it sounds amazing!"
Ethan crouched slightly to Olaf's eye level. "Olaf, do you know where Elsa went?"
The snowman scratched his chin—or, well, the space where his chin would be. "I saw her! She went up to that big, pointy, sparkly mountain! You can't miss it. There's a giant ice palace on top. Real estate value is questionable, but wow, the design?"
"Wait—an ice palace?" Anna's voice rose. "She made a palace?"
"Out of ice!" Olaf confirmed. "So fancy. Not a single splinter!"
Kristoff let out a low whistle. "She's gotten a lot stronger."
Ethan's eyes narrowed. "More powerful than we thought. That could be a problem."
"She's not a problem," Anna snapped. "She's scared."
Olaf looked between them. "You guys are going to see her?"
"That's the plan," Ethan said.
"Then I'm coming with you!" Olaf announced, sticking his stick-arm in the air. "Adventure! Love! Warm hugs!"
Kristoff raised an eyebrow. "You sure? It's going to get dangerous."
Olaf gave a little hop. "You can't get rid of me! I'm practically un-meltable!"
Ethan gave Anna a long look. "This is going to be a weird day."
She laughed. "Welcome to Arendelle."
As they continued their climb, Olaf skipped ahead, occasionally tripping or getting his head knocked off, which he simply popped back on without a care in the world. Ethan kept glancing back at Anna, noting the concern etched in her features.
"You okay?" he finally asked as they paused for a break.
She hugged herself. "I just… I don't want to make things worse. What if she won't listen to me?"
"She's your sister," Ethan said. "She'll listen."
Anna looked up at him, her blue eyes searching. "But what if she's too far gone?"
Ethan hesitated. He'd seen what fear and power could do. And Elsa… Elsa had both in abundance.
"Then," he said quietly, "we remind her who she is."
A cold wind swept through the mountain path. In the distance, barely visible through the trees, the glint of ice shimmered against the sky. The palace.
Ethan gripped his cloak tighter.
They were close.
And things were about to get complicated.
