Orario's air was thick with tension as Ethan and Lili hurried through the market. The roar from the distant lowers wasn't like any dungeon creature—they both felt it deep in their bones. The city, usually so alive with colors and sounds, now felt muted and uncertain.

"Do you think it came from the Dungeon?" Lili asked, voice taut as she gripped her shopping bag.

Ethan paused mid-step, brow creasing. "Could be... or maybe the sewers under the city. Nothing natural, though."

Their steps slowed as vendors glanced nervously around, whispering about monsters emerging near the surface. Street kids clutched their parents' hands. A sharp tension had gripped Orario, and the two of them were right in the middle of it, caught between curiosity and dread.

"Let's drop off the supplies first," Ethan decided, breaking the silence. "Then I'll ask around."

They retraced their steps to the church, weaving through alleyways and echoing shadows. It felt strange to walk back to safety when danger was brewing just beneath their feet.

Home Base

The church had never been so welcoming. Hestia greeted them at the door with a worried look. "That roar... heard it too?"

Ethan nodded. "We think it came from below. Something must have breached the Dungeon's mid-levels."

Hestia's forehead creased. "I'll... try not to panic," she said, voice trembling. Then she caught Lili's worried gaze. "I hope you're okay going back down tonight."

Lili nodded fast. "We just need to find out what's going on."

Hestia bit her lip. "Just... come back safe."

They brought their buying to the table—pouches of dried meat, potion belt straps, a couple of spare dagger sheaths, and a small vial of monster-locating powder Ethan insisted on.

Lili looked at him. "Test the gear?"

Ethan smiled wryly. "Three days until Ira's ready. But this'll hold for one dive."

They checked their inventory and made quick adjustments: Ethan locked a healing potion to his belt and fitted new reinforcements on his armor shoulders. Lili replaced broken bolts in her quiver and tucked a small notebook in her pocket—old habit—just in case.

Whispers in the Alley

Ethan left Lili to organize their gear while he went outside, walking quietly down a dim alley next to the guild. He spotted two Guild members in dark cloaks leaning over a map table outside a tent—an official probed with a staff marker, tracing pathways under the city.

Ethan gave them a nod. They paused.

"Master Ethan," one whispered. "We were sent when the alarm sounded."

Ethan's eyes narrowed, studying their gear and composure. "What have you found?"

The other shook his head. "Not yet. But we're setting checkpoints around the Dungeon entrances. We're to investigate abnormalities underground."

"Like that roar?" Ethan asked.

The first swallowed. "We started hearing it down on the gauntlet floor. Less inhabited until now. Something big must've broken through."

Ethan's pulse quickened. He looked back at the church. Lili was leaning on the wall, waiting for him. He walked toward her.

"We're going in," he said quietly.

Lili's eyes widened but didn't blink. "You ask them?"

"No. We got permission from Royman. Might as well get ahead."

She nodded, determination in her gaze. "Then let's go."

Edge of the Abyss

As night fell and the moon rose fat and silver, the city gates closed with a clang that echoed down stone corridors. Ethan and Lili knelt before the sealed Dungeon entrance—sealed because minor earthquakes had forced temporary restriction.

Ethan placed a hand on the stone seal, fingertips warm. "Let's break it."

Lili stood close, bow half-drawn. "And go down there?"

He nodded once. "Together. Stay sharp."

The seal cracked and fell inward—stone debris raining behind them.

They climbed down a spiral staircase with lit torches in wall brackets. The deeper they descended, the colder it got. They stopped on the tenth floor platform, where the air grew thick with the smell of damp earth and decay.

Ethan's grip tightened on his sword. "Remember floor boss rules—don't engage unless forced. Just investigate the source."

Lili swallowed. "Got it."

From below came another rumble—a low, angry growl that shook the stairs.

Lili's hand tightened on her crossbow. Ethan took a steadying breath.

"Ready?"

Lili nodded, eyes steady. "Let's go."

They stepped forward together into the dark, leaving behind the safety of Orario.

Ahead lay only silence and the unknown.
