Chapter 473: Virgil and Ruin
Just when Rio was about to ignore his plans and remove his limiters, a calm voice reached his ears.
"This one's for the goddess."
Rio turned around and saw the familiar figures of Nyx's followers emerging from the darkness of his shadow.
Without saying anything the group of night's chosen all dashed towards the group of Warzy's minions.
Rio looked over his shoulder and saw Akun nodding at him.
Next second, a spell had been casted and Amy appeared behind him.
And in her place, in the face of Warzy general was Akun himself.
Before the minion of Warzy could come to his senses, seeing this sudden reversal, 10 daggers appeared out of nowhere and stabbed his body.
Turning his towering figure into that of a sieve at a meat shop.
'Nails of Night' A magic spell which rips the user's nails, turning them into sharp daggers.
The damage, duration, and sharpness of this weapon is directly proportional to the proficiency of the darkness element.
For Akun who's been a part of Nyx's cult for God knows how many years, _ this sneaky spell was simply his one of the best trump cards.
And the results of it were obvious.
"...."
[Yes. I'll add it to the shopping cart.]
Now that his sister was safe and sound beside him, Rio watched the effects of Akun's spell and couldn't help but raise his brows in interest.
Causing the system to tiredly reply in response.
Rio ignored the fights around him, and looked at Amy, who still seemed to be thirsty for blood. He clicked his tongue and broke the bracelet from his wrist, before throwing it at her.
The silver jewellery enlarged magically and wrapped around Amy. Freezing her in place, while suppressing the effects of chaos.
One of the few gifts he had stolen from Leon's future opportunities.
'Merd of Sinus' A forgotten artifact made by some ancient Egyptian god, used for capturing prisoners, who escape the judgement of Ma'at..
Seeing Amy struggle and flail in anger trying to break free, for the first time Rio had the urge to slap her.
But he held back.
(Totally not cause he was too weak right now.)
He just waved his hand, exchanging points for a vial of potion and poured it in her mouth.
The chaos burned his fingers, but the pain was better than the alternative, so he ignored it. Her body jerked once, and then slowly began to stabilize.
Once he settled Amy, he looked up and noticed that in just the short while, Akun and his fellows had already killed the lots of Warzy.
And those who survived, seemed to have received some command, and started retreating in the far distance.
"Don't chase." Rio ordered, calling back Akun and his friends, who wanted to follow them and finish the job.
Rio patted Tanya's head, to tell her it's alright, before turning his head and staring at everyone gathering around him.
Finn and Becca were still panting heavily, but unlike others who started drinking potions and recovering, they still stood on his both sides with wary glances at the front.
At the mysterious man, observing everything _ who led this whole attack, yet made no move till now.
Rio too followed their sights and met the gaze of his old 'friend'.
It's been years since he last met this little villain _ and the changes in his powers and personality were enough to surprise him.
He looked so different now. Taller, leaner, draped in dark robes with a mechanical arm gleaming in the light. But Rio recognized his expression.
Smug. Cold.
Insane.
Just the way it was years ago, when he tortured him and left him to die inside the crashing dungeon.
"What do you want, Virgil?" Rio asked, his voice calm but eyes sharp.
His words, making his friends surprised about how he knew the identity of their attacker.
But only Akun frowned after hearing his question, as it implied, they were giving in. But out of respect for Nyx, he didn't cut him off.
Rio noticed this subtle change, but there was no need to explain. Cause even though they had backup now, with numerical advantage and high spirits in favor — he knew if this fight dragged on, they'd lose.
Virgil _ like him, was an anomaly now.
Virgil looked at Rio with a smile, as if he saw through him and then responded with a smile.
"You." Virgil replied with a cold smile as he raised his metal arm and made a snapping gesture with the pointy fingers.
Instantly everyone from Warzy got blasted apart, turning into blood mist, before being swallowed up by him.
Same was the case for all the others who were already dead.
Rio watched without blinking, as every corpse exploded and turned into mist, before being devoured.
The battlefield was suddenly, unnervingly clean of corpses, leaving only scorch marks and the stench of ozone and copper.
"Your attack failed," Rio said, breaking the silence, while brushing the imaginary dust off his shoulder. "By now the Raven's must have gotten the news. They'll be here before you could kill me."
"I know." Virgil nodded in approval, before saying, "But then again, I didn't plan to kill you."
"Death would be too easy for you. I want you to suffer."
".... All this just for a hand." Rio replied with a sneer.
"A hand… And some." Virgil replied, massaging the joint where his skin met metal. "You stole something from me, remember?"
"That trash technique? I'll make you a dozen more—gift-wrapped."
"No, no, no. See that's where you're wrong."
Rio replied but Virgil hurriedly shook his head and cut him off.
"I don't care about that technique. I cared about my future." Virgil replied, his voice edging with hate as he started talking about the dungeon attack. "Because of you I failed that mission. I failed the chance to break through naturally."
"Do you know how I've spent the years in Warzy with a broken hand and a poisoned body? The sacrifices I had to make? The pain, the humiliation I had to go through?"
"And it's all because of you."
"And every damned day I woke up, I'd regret how easily you got away."
"Imagine my surprise when I heard you actually came back."
"So tell me, Rio, with this inferno of hate burning in my heart, how could I just kill you at once, and let it all end?" Virgil finished his long ass monologue, hoping to hear his response. See his silence. See his fear.
Only to feel stunned seeing Rio open his mouth and yawn lazily with a bored look.
"...Y_ youuuu." Virgil shouted in anger at a loss for words. While his mechanical fingers started shining red.
"Ohhh, you're done?" Rio said as if realizing this silence just now, while picking his ears.
"You can whine more if you want." He mocked.
"..."
"Since you're done, then let me explain." Rio spoke and started saying, "YOU attacked the dungeon. YOU came after me. YOU were dumb, and that's why you failed."
"If anything, it should be me who should feel angry."
"But unlike you, I didn't order a hunt for your head, even after your little assassination attempt at Dorsia." Rio responded, reminding the villain of his last failure.
Rebecca heard his words, and couldn't help but look at Virgil in surprise. Apparently it was only now that she learned who was actually behind the attack on them on a floating island a few months ago.
"That was just a greeting," Virgil sneered. "This__ is the message."
"I'm coming for you, Rio. And I won't stop until I destroy everything you hold dear." Virgil replied with a laugh as he flung a small, black scroll, sealed with a chaotic red skull wax, directly at Rio's face.
And before it could strike, his figure dissolved into a whirlwind of the same bloody mist he'd consumed, vanishing without a sound.
Finn caught the scroll midair, unfolding it cautiously.
His face turned grim and fingers tightened around the edges after reading the content.
He looked at Amy and shook his head. Before handing the scroll to Rio, who could already guess it's content from their reaction.
[Wanted order.]
[Amelia Blake - dead or alive.]
[Reward - A favor from the Hall of Chaos.]
[Signed - Ubbe Intres. The hand of ruin.]
Rio read the letter which held a portrait of Amy, with a row of bounty and skull head insignia at the bottom _ and frowned in anger.
(This is way too soon.) He thought in his heart, feeling palpitations just staring at the name signed in the corner.
He glanced at Amy who had closed her eyes, still subconsciously struggling to control chaos - and couldn't help but feel the urge to slap her again.
If sideline assassins and Apate's followers weren't already enough to give him a headache, this damned Virgil had somehow managed to pull one of the final bosses into the early games.
It's all ruined now.
