Chapter 309: The Unraveling
Just as everyone was preparing to watch the next scene unfold, Grandmaster Quinn erupted in a fit of rage, leaping to his feet and roaring, "That beast!"
As he spoke, he shot a glance at Bobby.
Bobby offered a wry smile, knowing full well that the insult was directed at his father. His father, after marrying his legitimate wife—Bobby's stepmother, had then gotten his childhood bed-warming maid, Bobby's real mother, pregnant. And after that… Bobby had six more sisters and four more brothers. Each child born to a different mother. Now, he had yet another sister!
…
"Grandmaster Quinn…" Melody called out, giving a stunned Kiara a deep look. "I'm talking about her biological grandfather!"
She then lifted her head, her gaze fixed intently on Grandmaster Quinn.
"Biological…" The gesticulating Grandmaster Quinn suddenly froze.
Grandmaster Quinn: "Do you know…"
Melody Quinn: "I know…"
Grandmaster Quinn: "Then back then…"
Melody Quinn's face flushed. "Big Brother was just looking out for us…"
The two spoke in riddles, only half-finishing their sentences.
Finally, Grandmaster Quinn slumped back into his chair.
"Aunt Melody, what are you two talking about?" Kiara gazed at Melody with wide, eager eyes.
The latter stroked her head, saying softly, "Call me Mom."
Ethan had expected the little girl to react strongly, but to his surprise, she grinned and chuckled, "Hehe… I already knew you were my mom!"
"You little rascal…" Melody dotingly ruffled her hair, making Kiara Quinn wrinkle her nose.
No one fully understood what had transpired, but everyone grasped the essence of it. Grandmaster Quinn sat in his chair, lost in thought. Seeing that there was no further explanation, the interlude passed. As for the child's true father, that was a matter for them to figure out at home. Everyone, however, already had their suspicions.
Even Markham, who had just walked in, leaned close to Ethan and whispered in his ear, "This old man, he doesn't have a secret love child, does he? No, wait, what did he mean by 'biological? Strange… Bobby, your dad isn't your grandma…"
Markham, let the words flow out like a tap.
Ethan grabbed a banana. Without even peeling it, he shoved it directly into Markham's mouth, stem and all.
Markham's eyes rolled back, and he gagged, "Ugh…"
"Alright, now let's think about how we're going to get out of here!" Matriarch Whitmore steered the conversation back to the main topic.
"And before we leave, how are we going to deal with that Ghost King that's attacking us?" It was Gregory Hargrove who spoke.
When he did, Ethan finally noticed him. In the short time since he'd last seen him, the man had now become crippled. His left arm was severed at the shoulder.
"What… what's going on? Ghost King…? Wasn't it a Corpse King?"
Ethan suddenly interjected, turning to look at Ryan. His words drew everyone's attention to him and Ryan.
"You know it's origin?"
Hearing the question and seeing Ethan's inquiring gaze, Ryan shrugged. "I haven't had a chance to tell you yet."
Everyone turned their attention to Ryan. Under the scrutiny of all the powerful figures, he felt the pressure intensify. Slowly, he recounted what had happened outside the Hidden Territory, down in the mountains.
"You mean… after I took the child away, that thing emerged from the tomb that those Relic Hunters blew open?" Mr. Kane asked, staring at Ryan in shock.
"Mm…" Ryan nodded, continuing, "When we arrived here, for a moment, I sensed it's aura. But then, it disappeared… I couldn't be sure if it was a Corpse or a Ghost."
"When he appeared just now, I noticed its aura was very fragmented. It had the aura of a Corpse, the aura of a Ghost, and even the aura of a Demon, and a Monster."
Ryan paused here.
"He's right!" Amber Zane suddenly interjected.
Ethan was a bit confused. Having gone to the forbidden area, he seemed to have missed something. Seeing everyone silent, their faces filled with worry, Ethan glanced at Markham, who was sitting next to him. That guy was still dry heaving, clearly a lingering effect from being force-fed the banana.
Ethan tilted his head and leaned closer.
Markham quickly recoiled. His eyes fixed intently on the banana in Ethan's hand.
"Uh…" Ethan awkwardly lowered his weapon. "Markham, what exactly happened?" he whispered. "Where did everyone else go?"
Ethan realized that within the range of his Senses, there was no one else. It was as if the entire Hidden Territory was silent, plunged into a deathly stillness.
Markham's spirits lifted when Ethan asked him. He rolled up his sleeve, his face excited, and was about to speak. However, he looked up and met Melinda's gaze. He immediately deflated, quickly composed himself, and leaned in to whisper the story to Ethan.
Moments later, Ethan finally understood what he had missed.
It turned out that shortly after Ethan left, Gregory Hargrove returned with his daughter—though he had lost an arm. His mount, the salamander, was even more tragically injured, with half its head missing. This creature, whatever it was, hadn't died. It carried Gregory Hargrove and Iris directly into the midst of the crowd.
Gregory Hargrove, witnessing the powerful families fighting amongst themselves, clearly didn't know what was happening. Lachlan Silverwood, that old snake, was the strangest, actually managing to fight Matriarch Whitmore to a standstill. However, everyone stopped fighting when they saw Gregory Hargrove's tragic state.
Unexpectedly, Gregory Hargrove only paused for a moment. Then, the half-crippled salamander carried him and bolted again.
"Stop fighting, run!" Gregory Hargrove's desperate roar followed.
Everyone was bewildered.
At the same time, a fierce roar echoed from the high platform of the arena: "Seamus Zane… how dare you…"
Everyone shifted their gaze, just in time to see Grandmaster Quinn spit out a milky-white pearl. It collided directly with Seamus Zane's massive palm print.
Boom—
With a loud bang, Grandmaster Quinn spewed blood, caught by Samuel Wynn. The recoil also sent Samuel Wynn spitting a mouthful of blood. Melody was blasted off the high platform by the impact.
At the same time, with a hum, a blood-red light barrier rose from the ground.
Everyone suddenly felt their blood stir within their bodies.
"Seamus… what are you doing?" Lachlan Silverwood, standing atop the giant statue in the arena, had a distorted expression.
At this moment, Seamus Zane held a formation plate in his hand. He was already floating outside the light barrier.
"Hehehe… doing what?" Seamus Zane let out a strange laugh. "If it weren't for the Energy Core being in your Silverwood family's territory, do you think I would—ugh…"
He had just gotten to this point—
Pfft—
Seamus Zane's chest burst open, and his heart, still beating, shot out from his chest.
"Damn it, your laugh is even uglier than mine…"
A faint black shadow appeared behind Seamus Zane. The black shadow's hand pierced through his chest, clutching a still-beating heart.
