Legendary Shelter Survival Guide

Chapter 98: Contribute to the shelter

"You have controlled this urge for such a long time, why not some more? If you go outside the shelter with no one, there are high chances that you will die."

"That's the thing, I don't want to die and think I will be dead this time or that time. I want to be strong enough and think 'Oh, it's the same level as me, I will take care of it quickly this time.', that sort of thing. I want to survive without thinking that I can't do it alone."

"NO, now that is a dangerous thought."

"Who cares! We will take care of the Kobolds tomorrow and then I will go alone one time. I am the leader, what I say is going to happen!" Lucas said with annoyance and grumbled his was inside the shelter to sleep, leaving John alone laughing.

"What an annoying kid..." John said but his expression showed a smile which was showing opposite of what he said.

The night went by and angrily, Lucas didn't take a single night shift while even Barney and Sean did.

'Why am I acting like this, so childish and embarrassing.' Lucas could not sleep much as he wanted to dig a hole and just die in it. Suddenly, his face constricted to another emotion when he found a realization in his angry thoughts.

'That's it! Why am I even asking Uncle John? I will leave on my own, who can stop me anyway?'

Lucas thought and with a smile, he finally slept.

The day came quickly and Lucas didn't talk to John the whole morning which made John smile even harder. Lucas was acting like a kid!

"What the hell? You got vegetarian food?! Is this even edible?" Haley asked with a frown, all this time, his groups had survived on leaves and grass with sometimes a fruit when they think it is not poisonous.

But it did not go well every time, Jimmy one time got poisoned for days.

"Lucas has a skill that helps with finding such stuff... Uh..." Bill said and found that Lucas was looking at him with serious eyes. The guy didn't say anything for the rest of the morning thinking that he might be dead if he did something again.

Everyone knew that Lucas was in a bad mood, many knew that John and Lucas had a talk last night that became loud but didn't know what had happened aside from Ella.

"Okay everyone, eat the food to your heart's content today as there is going to be a quota from tomorrow. You will all get 2 meat pieces and 2 rimmerroots every day and with each proficiency increase in your skills, you will get one more rimmerroot." Lucas said while chomping on a slice of smoked meat regularly.

"If you want to live in the shelter, you will also have to contribute to its upgrades. From tomorrow, you will all help in collecting the shelter's resources. Is that clear?"

No one said anything for a while except John who was grinning with an expression of 'I told you so' making Lucas grumble further.

What did he say that was blunt? He was just straightforward with the things that the people needed to know. They may get the fruits from the forest but even the rimmerroots were getting rarer near the shelter's territory.

Even if they were in abundance, they needed time to grow. And meat didn't grow on trees, if they hunt, then the group will get meat, and it's not regular.

"Why the sudden change?" Sean asked with an annoyed expression.

Lucas was going to answer again but this time, John butted in to help the conversation flow normally now. Lucas had already done his part to bring in the bad news straightforwardly. now he could just explain things peacefully.

"The fruits are getting rarer near the shelter, we will have to go farther to get them which is dangerous. The meat supply is scarce now as that there are 11 people in the group. And smoking the meat also takes a toll on time. We have to be specific in numbers in order to think the long-term survival. The Food that everyone gets every day will be sufficient for the stomach but not for the mind.

But we don't have a choice here so please try to understand."

"But-"

"We are okay with it." Jerry interrupted Sean and said for his whole group who nodded too.

"We have lived in worse times anyway, just change the meat to the rimmerroots for me, Sandra, and Haley. Mike and Bill can take meat."

"No problem with that, I appreciate your understanding," John said and looked at Lucas for further conversation.

"Ah yes, there is one more thing, we will be leaving for hunting the Kobolds to get that good grazing area for ourselves. Please be ready in a few hours, The non-fighters will stay and do other work in the shelter which is direly needed."

Nobody had any objection, many were even itching to fight after getting their new skills by tearing the papers. Lucas hadn't done so till now but he was going to after this hunt.

As the preparations for the hunt began, Lucas observed the excitement and determination in the eyes of his group members. He couldn't help but feel a sense of pride knowing that they were willing to fight and contribute to the survival of the shelter. It was a refreshing change from his earlier frustration.

Lucas gathered the fighters and explained the plan for the Kobold hunt. He assigned different roles and placed individuals based on their skills and strengths in the formation. He made sure to emphasize the importance of teamwork and caution, reminding them that their goal was not just to kill but to secure the good area without destroying it.

Sandra, Haley, Bill, and Sean were left behind as they didn't contribute much to the fights. Sean should but he had the idea of doing other things like learning how to rune.

Sandra was given the task to make the makeshift ropes after teaching her while also practicing her new skill and learning the attacking techniques.
