Chapter 91: The Robber is NYPD?
Augustus slapped his hands together loudly and cursed with an F-word after hearing Reesi's words.
"What does that mean?"
Seeing that Mona still didn't catch on, Luo An pulled up all six videos, slowed down the brief clips of the robbers entering the bank, and displayed them in front of her:
If the walking postures of the bank robbers in the first four cases outside the bank are considered normal.
Then the robbers in the fifth and sixth cases, compared to the first group of robbers, had their knees pointed more outward when stepping forward.
It was not until they burst through the doors into the bank lobby that the walking postures of the robbers in cases five and six began to resemble those of the earlier bank robbers.
In simple terms, the robbers in the fifth and sixth cases deliberately disguised their walking postures to make their images in the bank hall surveillance videos more similar to earlier robbers!
After watching the surveillance video, Mona immediately covered her mouth, looking at Luo An with a face full of shock.
She never expected that Luo An would actually find evidence of an imitator in a video less than 2 seconds long.
After cursing the robbers, Reesi also looked at Luo An with astonishment.
Unlike Mona, Reesi was amazed at Luo An's attention to detail and observational skills.
Augustus patted his belly and grinned widely.
He knew Luo An would not disappoint him.
"What should we do next?"
After a moment of silence, Mona instinctively tilted her head towards Luo An, as she had grown accustomed to turning to him when unsure:
"Even if we know there are imitators, we probably can't find them, right?"
The surveillance videos are too short, only about ten seconds long for most cases except the third.
Even now, knowing that the fifth and sixth cases were imitation crimes, the surveillance videos do not provide more clues.
Unless they start checking the eyewitness statements at the crime scenes.
But those witnesses were scared after all, and their testimonies only provide a general situation, even if someone mentions details, it is impossible to tell if they are true or false.
Reesi frowned:
"If they are imitating, does that mean they clearly know the specific details of the previous cases?"
"You are right."
Luo An pointed to the video still playing on the computer and said:
"The imitators must know the robber's height, weight, attire, and the methods used in the crimes.
There was less than a week between the fifth case and the fourth, very little time.
In such a short time, their imitation of the first group of robbers was so alike, they must have practiced a lot."
Hearing Luo An's words, everyone nodded in agreement and Reesi said in a low voice after a moment:
"Besides the agents of the 14th investigation unit, only the NYPD would clearly know the specifics of the previous four cases."
When the bank was robbed, the alarm bell was pressed, although the FBI would also receive the message, the NYPD would arrive first.
After all, they have patrol officers on the streets and maintaining order at the crime scene is also part of their duties.
"What?"
Hearing Reesi's words, Augustus suddenly closed his gaping mouth and looked at her seriously:
"Are you sure?"
Accusing the New York Police is a serious matter.
New York Police has a strong force of over 30,000 officers and substantial funding, ranking first in the police department's budget and expenditures across the federation.
Moreover, the police are exceptionally united when facing agencies like the FBI, so without 100% certainty and direct evidence, the FBI won't easily touch them.
"The NYPD is just one aspect."
Luo An shook his head, thinking that it was very unlikely for the NYPD to be the robbers in the last two cases:
"In addition to the New York Police, the eyewitnesses locked in the bank during the first four incidents, bank staff, security guards, and bank managers, all have the potential to commit the crime."
Hearing Luo An's words, Augustus's slightly furrowed brows relaxed a bit, and Reesi nodded after a moment of contemplation.
Mona tilted her head toward Luo An, Luo An picked up the witness statements from the fifth and sixth cases, flipped through them briefly, and continued:
"So our next task is to closely scrutinize these people.
See if they have experienced any unusual changes in their economic status in the recent period.
As for the first four cases, we will investigate them after clarifying the situation with these two cases."
"OK."
After hearing Luo An's analysis, Augustus's big black face broke into a smile. He stood up from his chair with his big belly, waved at the technicians sitting behind him, and shouted loudly:
"We are going to do some IRS work now!
Check every person at the crime scenes of the first four cases carefully! We must clearly investigate their recent financial situation!"
Meanwhile, Augustus did not give up on the NYPD lead. After pondering for a moment, he turned his gaze towards William:
"Go check the case log, see which New York Police officers have accessed the files of the previous four robbery cases. If you find an unusual number of accesses, report back to me immediately."
"OK."
William nodded solemnly and turned to leave Squad Five.
As Augustus's orders were given, Squad Five began to get busy, while Luo An started...
Drinking coffee, continuing to monitor the surveillance.
More than two hours later, several technicians from Squad Five compiled a list of suspicious individuals.
The list contained basic information such as height and weight, matching those of the robbers in the previous four robberies.
And for the fifth and sixth robberies, they didn't have alibis for the time of the crimes.
The list included eyewitnesses from the previous four crime scenes, relatives of bank employees, and bank security guards.
"Hmm?"
Seeing the name of a security guard from the first robbed bank on the list, Luo An frowned slightly:
The list indicated that the security guard, Freddie, had been a soldier when he was young, had an average salary at the bank, and had always lived a modest lifestyle.
Although he hadn't bought a new car or a new house recently, he started visiting an upscale strip club after work.
And on the days of the fifth and sixth robberies, he had taken leaves of absence from the bank and didn't go to work.
This was something Freddie had never done before.
Reesi, seeing the record on the list, frowned slightly but still tilted her head towards Luo An:
"Should we go check this security guard?"
"Of course."
Luo An nodded, pocketed the list, and stood up with Reesi heading for the equipment room:
"Let's see if Mr. Freddie is working as a security guard at the strip club in the evenings because he's short on cash, or if he's simply enjoying New York's local culture."
—
The first bank to be robbed.
A dark SUV slowly stopped, fully-armed Luo An and Reesi stepped out of the car, pushed open the door, and entered the bank, where an elderly black security guard with a big belly immediately greeted them.
"Hello, agents."
The elderly black security guard shook hands with Luo An, gestured for the two to follow him to the lounge area in the lobby, then asked with a smile:
"Is there anything I can help you with?"
After shaking hands with him, Luo An got straight to the point:
"Where is Freddie right now? Isn't he at work?"
"He went to buy coffee, should be back soon."
Hearing Luo An's question, the elderly black security guard smiled, pointing towards a coffee shop diagonally across the bank.
Just then, a middle-aged white man in a bank security uniform, carrying two cups of coffee, walked into the bank. The elderly black security guard immediately raised his hand to say:
"Freddie! Someone is looking for you!"
Upon hearing this, Luo An and Reesi instantly turned their attention towards Freddie.
Seeing the fully-armed Luo An and Reesi, Freddie's smile froze, and then without hesitation, he threw the coffee aside and turned to flee.
"Fu-k!"
Seeing Freddie's unhesitating retreat, Luo An and Reesi cursed simultaneously and hurriedly gave chase.
Between the bank and the coffee shop across the street was a broad road. When Luo An and Reesi burst out of the bank, Freddie had already risked being hit by cars, running swiftly to the other side of the road.
"You go left, I'll go right!"
Seeing Freddie's rapidly fleeing figure, Reesi didn't hesitate, turned her head to tell Luo An, and quickly gave chase.
"OK!"
Luo An didn't waste words and decisively dashed in the other direction.
