Chapter 587: Hell Joke
Saturday, 11:30 AM, a borrowed temporary office, meeting room.
Mona entered the meeting room and immediately captured everyone's attention; Reesi raised her eyebrows:
"Interesting post?"
"Mainly some hellish jokes."
Mona placed her laptop on the meeting table to show everyone, explaining:
"Why don't federal agents use metric units without millimeters in their daily lives?
Because you can find millimeters in school."
"..."
The expressions of the agents were somewhat difficult to maintain. Group Leader Luo An cleared his throat and asked:
"Apart from hellish jokes, what else is there?"
"There's also a 'recruitment advertisement.'"
Mona dropped her smile, tapped a few keys on the keyboard, and spoke earnestly:
"Michelle and I found some posts in the Underworld crime website number 3.
All these posts come from one person. Each post always starts with a hellish joke to catch people's attention.
Then, right below the hellish joke, there is a 'recruitment advertisement,' continuously recruiting 'meat rabbits.'"
"Meat rabbits? What does that mean? Carnivorous rabbits?"
Upon hearing this unfamiliar word, Reesi, Winslow, and Chenier in the meeting room looked puzzled, while Luo An's expression turned cold, and he said:
"No, this term represents living humans waiting to be slaughtered."
Just like the 'Tomb Raider Captain' in the Eastern world, the Western underworld has many special terms for different professions.
For instance, human bones are called "white gold," eyeballs are "sparklers," and regardless of their original names, trafficked women are all called "Amy" until they are sold.
This unique naming has obscure origins, and people in the underworld do not care about the reasons behind the names; their minds and hearts are only focused on buying and selling.
Hearing Luo An explain that "meat rabbits" meant living humans, everyone in the room looked at him with a mix of surprise and shock. Chenier quickly grasped something and asked:
"Since 'meat rabbits' represents 'living humans to be slaughtered,' why is there a 'recruitment' mentioned at the beginning?
…Online recruitment for people who, for money, are willing to be killed by others?"
"That's exactly right."
Mona's face turned grim and she said:
"The owner of this post states that he is regularly recruiting humans willing to be killed, offering fifty thousand dollars per person. To show sincerity, during the face-to-face transaction phase, the poster will pay the sellers first.
Especially those with unique statuses such as lawyers, doctors, motorcycle stuntmen, race car drivers, or those holding special documents like a senior lawyer's license or senior accountant certification can negotiate a higher price."
"..."
Looking at the content of the post on the computer, everyone present had grim expressions, and Winslow frowned tightly:
"This sort of thing..."
"Is not uncommon."
Luo An shook his head, in the federal life, being penniless basically means constantly stepping into hell.
Selling one's own life for money, some people with no hope in life, yet having vulnerable dependents, might indeed consider doing so.
Observing the computer, the post content about "meat rabbits," specifying requirements on height, weight, no infectious diseases, no history of consuming flour in the past year, etc., the meeting room fell silent.
After pondering for a few seconds, Luo An asked:
"Mona, does the owner of this post have any connection to the two serial murder cases we're investigating?"
"The second one, the back-of-the-head gunshot case."
Mona typed a few keystrokes, pulling up another primarily black webpage, and explained:
"Michelle just discovered on Underworld website number 5, someone with the same avatar as the owner of this post on Underworld website number 3."
"The two of us compared the individuals from website 3 and website 5 and found out they are the same person."
Chenier said with a serious expression:
"In website 5, this guy is also advertising, recruiting 'meat rabbits?'"
"Yes."
Mona nodded and scrolled down the computer page, saying:
"However, a few months ago, when this guy posted the 'recruitment ad' on website 5, in addition to the usual hell jokes, he also included a picture."
Mona pulled up the recruitment ad from a few months ago, and all agents carefully examined it, finding that the image contained a well-dug rectangular pit with a shovel standing next to it and a bundle of thin rope lying on the ground.
Ignoring the hell jokes, Mona tapped on the keyboard a few times, brought up a red line segment next to the shovel, and explained by comparing measurements:
"The shovel appearing in the picture is the most common type available on the federal market, with a standard length of 1.3 meters.
Using it as a measure to compare with the pit next to it, we find that the pit is 1.8 meters long, 1 meter wide, and 1.5 meters deep."
"It's exactly the same as the pit dug by the murderer when executing the victims in the second serial murder case."
Luo An nodded, and then gestured for Mona to zoom in on the bundle of thin ropes, squinting his eyes:
"In the second serial murder case, the wrists of the last three of the eight victims had binding marks.
The type of thin rope inferred by the trace examination department matches the rope in this picture."
Chenier and Winslow both got excited, and Reesi asked anxiously:
"Can we find out the real identity of the person who posted this ad?"
"Of course, but..."
Mona nodded, indicating she had the capability, but did not start immediately, instead turning to look at Luo An.
Luo An instantly understood Mona's thinking; under normal circumstances Mona couldn't do it, but she could through hacking into the website.
"Wait a moment, I'm going to buy an orange... I mean, make a call."
Ignoring Mona's eager gaze, Luo An waved his hand and walked out of the room.
Mona's action might adversely affect other law enforcement agencies performing their duties and ultimately lead to Mona being punished; therefore, Luo An decided to first contact the intelligence department.
The call was quickly connected, and after listening to Luo An's description, the intelligence department immediately said it wasn't that complicated, asked for the name and number of the poster, and said:
"We can find out his real identity very soon and will send it to Group Leader Luo An shortly!"
Luo An's eyes sparkled, and he laughed:
"Thank you very much."
"Don't mention it, we'll have a drink together sometime."
"Of course! My treat!"
After a brief exchange, both hung up the call.
Feeling the "fruit of face" for the first time due to his capabilities and reputation making a big noise, Luo An's lips curled up slightly, revealing a smile.
But many things have pros and cons, and with myriad thoughts running through his mind, he pondered future plans and strategies while turning back to the conference room.
"Soon, the intelligence department will send us the information of the person who posted the ad."
In the conference room, ignoring Mona's disappointed look, Luo An clapped his hands and said:
"Everyone get ready to gather your equipment!"
"No problem!"
All the agents in the conference room responded in unison, briefly organized their documents, and started heading out.
Half an hour later, Luo An's computer received an email, which included a photo of a Caucasian male and his identity information:
Innis Heller, 44 years old, had been to prison for assault in his youth, unemployed, residing not far from New York in New Jersey.
Luo An printed out the information and distributed it to all the agents, saying:
"Let's go and have a chat with Mr. Innis about his boring jokes!"
"Understood!"
