Ch91- Familiar Scene
Despite the urgency of the situation, Kai looked around with a casual demeanor, his gaze flitting over the carvings on the walls. His nonchalance was both unnerving and calming, a dichotomy that perfectly encapsulated his unpredictable nature.
Uryu, on the other hand, was on high alert. His eyes scanned their surroundings, taking in every detail. His nerves were palpable, his hand still gripping his weapon tightly.
Sado was silent, his large frame radiating a quiet strength. His eyes, though, mirrored his apprehension, flickering around the unfamiliar space as he stayed close to Ichigo.
Ichigo stood still, his intense gaze scanning the area. His eyes betrayed the fierce determination within him, his fists clenched tightly at his sides.
Kai, having finished his assessment of the room, broke the silence. "Let's get moving. We're not far from the central chamber. That's where they'll be keeping Karin and Yuzu."
Without waiting for a response, he started to move. The others followed his lead, their steps echoing in the silence of the vast chamber.
As they ventured deeper into the structure, Kai began to whistle softly. The sound echoed off the stone walls, creating an eerie harmony with the otherwise silent atmosphere. Ichigo shot him a glance, his brow furrowed in irritation. However, Kai only responded with an amused smirk, not missing a beat in his tune.
"Can't you take this seriously?" Uryu hissed, his anxiety beginning to bubble over.
Kai turned to him, his eyes glinting with a teasing light. "Who said I'm not serious, huh? Just because I'm not wearing a frown doesn't mean I'm not focused."
Ishida was annoyed, and the tension between him and Kai was as clear as daylight. The animosity was mutual and, although unspoken, it hung in the air like a tangible object, casting a shadow on their interactions. Ishida was precise, meticulous, and serious. Kai, on the other hand, was laid-back, enigmatic, and unpredictable. It wasn't a surprise that they constantly butted heads.
Suddenly, two Hollows materialized out of the shadows behind Ichigo and Ishida. One was an abomination, a grotesque hybrid between a Human and a Hollow, its dark skin contrasting starkly with the white fragments of a Hollow mask that covered the top of its face. The other was a four-armed monstrosity, its elongated fingers crackling with volatile energy, ready to be unleashed in lethal blasts. Its Hollow mask was bird-like, obscuring the majority of its face, leaving only the upper-left quarter visible.
Sado, seeing the immediate danger his friends were in, was about to charge into battle, but Kai nonchalantly waved his hand. In an instant, the two Hollows vanished without a trace. A moment of bewildered silence followed their abrupt disappearance.
"Huh, what happened?" Ichigo asked, turning around and scanning the area where the Hollows had appeared.
Sado, still in shock, turned to look at Kai. "Two hollows appeared and Kai-san... he just... made them disappear."
Ishida, equally bewildered, asked, "Where are they?"
Kai merely smirked, his nonchalant demeanor never wavering. "New addition to my zoo," he stated cryptically.
Ishida's brows furrowed in confusion, his eyes narrowing at Kai. "Your zoo?" He asked, skepticism dripping from his words.
"Yep, my zoo," Kai replied with a shrug, amusement sparkling in his eyes. He seemed to find the whole situation entertaining. "Now, shall we continue?"
As they continued their journey through the building, Ishida kept casting sideways glances at Kai, his thoughts mulling over the latter's peculiar abilities. Despite his annoyance, he couldn't help but feel a twinge of curiosity.
Ichigo was silent, his gaze focused on the path ahead. His fists clenched tightly at his sides, reflecting his determination. He wanted to save his sisters. That was all he cared about.
The endless expanse of Hueco Mundo stretched out before them, a desolate desert shrouded in eternal night. The heavy scent of ash hung in the air, mixed with an intangible aura of death, a grim testament to the countless hollows that prowled these cursed lands.
"The memories...they weren't exaggerating," Kai muttered to himself, wrinkling his nose at the distinct smell of the environment. This was the Hollows' realm, and its foreboding atmosphere was anything but welcoming.
The looming silhouette of Las Noches pierced the horizon, its grandeur a stark contrast to the barren landscape. Its white walls were barely discernible under the moonless sky, the structure resembling more a monstrous beast in slumber than the palace it was.
"There," Kai pointed, his finger aimed towards the menacing structure. "That's where Aizen and your sisters are, Ichigo. Let's go."
As they pressed onward, the group encountered several low-level Hollows. Instead of intervening, Kai hung back, observing their combat capabilities. Each skirmish served as a test, an opportunity for him to gauge their power.
Ichigo, with his fully awakened Zanpakuto, made quick work of his opponents, his strength and determination evident in his swift and decisive actions. Sado, too, showcased his substantial growth, his Fullbringer powers more refined and stronger since the last time Kai had trained him.
Uryu, however, didn't fare as well. While he was capable and diligent, his strength was outmatched by Ichigo's and Sado's. Yet, the Quincy held his own, his sharpshooter accuracy compensating for his lack of brute strength.
As they moved forward, a scene of chaos unfolded before them. A small human child, seemingly out of place in this hostile world, was being pursued by a pack of Hollows. The sight was comically absurd, a stark contrast to the grim atmosphere of Hueco Mundo.
A chuckle escaped Kai's lips. "Well, that's not something you see every day."
Ichigo, however, didn't share Kai's amusement. His expression hardened, his hand tightening around the hilt of his Zanpakuto. "We have to help him."
Sado nodded, his large frame tensing in preparation for the fight. Uryu, too, seemed ready, his bow materializing in his hand as he took aim.
"Hold on," Kai said, stepping in front of them.
Recognizing the scene from Dondochakka's memories, Kai chuckled to himself. The 'child' was not a child, nor a boy, but the former 3rd Espada, Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck or Nel for short. A mild surprise in this violent realm, she carried a gentle spirit even in her Hollow form. Kai found her character familiar to another Espada - Tier Harribel. He saw potential allies in them against Aizen's looming threat.
The Hollows, her former Fracciones, were not chasing her with ill intentions but were simply part of a harmless game, even if it looked chaotic from the outside.
