Chapter 56: The night before the gala...
Finally, it was the night before the big event. Thanks to the final preparations that had to be done, Linda hardly spent any time in the office making it easy for Freddy to keep his mouth shut, and also ease his nerves. He was anxious and the secret was really suffocating him. He went as far as ignoring his mother, and he'd never done that before, but he had to, this wasn't just a secret, this was something that could tear the family apart. He understood very well what was at stake, hence he was trying his best to keep it from slipping and seeing Linda's face would have only made it harder for him.
On the other hand, Lilly's and Joseph's nerves were also not letting out, it was the day before the gala, meaning the day they dread is quickly closing in. Lilly's blood pressure levels had been higher than before and this was not doing any good to her health and that meant Joseph was having just as many sleepless nights, worried about his wife.
As she sat on her dresser admiring the gown Linda picked for her, her heart suddenly became heavy, "It will all be over soon....", she said to herself. She wondered if she would ever see her again after the truth come out. Will she ever smile at her again? A tear rolled down her cheek, "Things will definitely never be the same again..", she wept,
All Joseph could do was just comfort her, his heart ached for his wife, and with each teardrop, he felt like a knife was being lunged at his heart and there had been a lot of those lately. Even the doctor is worried.
He drew closer to her with a handkerchief, "We will deal with that when we get to it... Let's just try to complete the first step. Okay?"
Lilly nodded with a forced smile, she knew that Joseph was worried sick about her and she thought smiling from time to time would put his mind at ease, but little did she know, he could see through the forced smile, his wife was falling apart.
Unlike at the main mansion, things were on a lighter note at John's house, he could be heard whistling in the hallways. His helpers were astonished by the chirpy mood he's been in lately. In fact, they hoped it could stay like this forever, John was no fun to deal with, if he was not shouting at everyone, he was randomly firing someone; people had to tread lightly around him, avoid even making the silliest mistake. But lately, the air felt lighter and it was all because of Linda, well to be fair, all his moods are influenced by her, but this is the first time that he's been jolly. John has been looking forward to the gala ever since he witnessed her and Jeremy, he was ecstatic. Things were going according to his plan, he would finally get what was his, "By this time next year, Global Tech would mine.." he hummed and danced as he admired himself in the mirror.
But John was not the only one who was in a festive mood, Maggie was just as ecstatic, she couldn't wait to wreak havoc at the gala and ruin the engagement. She smiled to herself just daydreaming about it; Linda looking embarrassed and humiliated, on top of that, everyone admiring how she looked better than her, clearly proving that she is better suited for Jeremy than her. Her trophy would be Jeremy announcing his engagement to her instead of Linda. Talk about public humiliation she would never recover from, her reputation tarnished and she couldn't wait! Thanks to Tony being by her side, she will surely win this battle. It was guaranteed, "Little Ms. King doesn't even know what's waiting for her. She messed with the wrong girl for sure.", she said switching off the night light.
As for Linda, the night before the gala was filled with nothing but anxiousness. Jackie would be arriving at any moment with her big bombshell and her heart was pounding out of control. As she prepares the guest bedroom for her, her mind kept wandering off, imagining the kind of news she would be learning this evening. After all, Jackie wouldn't insist on a face-to-face conversation if it was not major.
"Linda, we will be back soon, we are going to get takeout!"
"Sure aunt!", she said. Her aunt doesn't like having helpers around so Linda had to ask them to rotate, meaning only one person was available everyday, just until her aunt leaves. But that meant they were short on hands, forcing her to prepare the guest bedroom for Jackie herself, like she was doing and her aunt to take on some of the chores like cooking sometimes. But all that work was nothing compared to how happy she's been lately because of her aunt staying with her and having Jeremy around is like a cherry on top, she's been the happiest she's ever been.
"Linda!", a loud pitchy sound emanated from downstairs and she instantly knew who it was. She rushed out to welcome her with a big hug, "You poor thing... You look so tired...", she said as she gently brushed Jackie's hair to the side,
"You have no idea," she whined, "I almost missed my flight because I had to submit all my schoolwork, so I sort of lost track of time. But anyway... I'm here. Although my reasons for being here are not the best ones, it's always nice to see you. I just wished it was under different circumstances, maybe I'd even be excited for the gala."
With fear in her eyes, Linda stammered, "Come on Jackie, it can't be that bad, can it?? is it that bad?"
Jackie sighed, and began scouring through her backpack, "I think it's best if you read it yourself..."
