Konoha’s White Fang Shines

Chapter 42: Chapter 42: C-Rank War Assistance Mission

Chapter 42: C-Rank War Assistance Mission

After returning the Onba cubs, the group headed back to Konoha. Spending six days in the wilderness without much to show for it left them in low spirits. Yet, their return to the village provided little reprieve. Within mere moments of arriving, they were shuffled off to intensive training sessions.

The training was relentless—grueling physical conditioning followed by swordplay sparring and live combat exercises. To make matters worse, it seemed like Yuji and Noma had prearranged this ordeal, combining both teams for collective training.

For three excruciating days, the eight young ninjas endured "hell training." Finally, the sessions ended, and the group hoped for some rest. But barely had they caught their breath when they were summoned to the mission assignment hall.

The two instructors, Yuji and Noma, seemed particularly chummy, which raised suspicions. Their frequent conspiratorial grins didn't bode well. As expected, when Noma stepped forward with a mission briefing in hand, it became clear the teams would be working together again.

"This mission comes directly from the Daimyo of the Land of Fire," Noma began with a mischievous smile. "It's an international task classified between C and B rank, so we'll be working together to ensure its success. As for the specifics… time is tight. You'll read the details on the way."

With that, he handed the briefing to Ebisu and promptly headed for the door.

The abruptness of the announcement left the team members reeling. Just as they were about to huddle around Ebisu for a look at the briefing, Yuji's command rang out:

"Move out!"

The group exchanged bewildered looks.

What's the rush?

Their confusion turned to frustration as the two squad leaders sped up their pace, leaving the younger ninjas scrambling to keep up.

Determined to learn more, Might Guy grabbed Ebisu's arm. "Ebisu, let me guide you while you read. Don't worry about tripping—I've got your back!" he declared, his teeth flashing brilliantly.

Ebisu nodded numbly, handing over the scroll. Meanwhile, Raido and Washi leaned in to sneak glances at the text. Sensing their curiosity, Genma organized the group into a protective formation around Ebisu, ensuring he could read safely while they traveled.

By the time they reached Konoha's gates, Ebisu's voice trembled as he read aloud:

"A war… assistance mission. We're going to participate in a war."

"What?"

The group froze, their faces stiffening with shock.

"The mission involves aiding one nation's army in defeating another. The client is the Daimyo of the Land of This Country."

"A war? How can this be?" Washi stammered, glancing nervously at the two squad leaders.

Up ahead, Yuji and Noma seemed utterly unbothered, chatting and laughing as they led the way.

This is a war, Washi thought, his heart pounding furiously.

"War, huh…" Guy murmured, uncharacteristically subdued.

The atmosphere grew heavier by the second. Sensing the team's growing anxiety, Genma forced himself to remain calm.

"Alright, everyone, listen up," he said, his voice steady despite his own nerves. "War is something we'll have to face sooner or later. This is a small-scale conflict, so there's no need to panic. Our instructors wouldn't send us to our deaths."

His reassuring tone steadied the group. One by one, they looked to him for guidance, finding comfort in his composure.

Feeling the weight of their trust, Genma gave further instructions: "We'll change formation. Raido and Guy, take the front. Ebisu and Washi, stay in the middle. Kurenai and I will cover the rear. Let's pick up the pace."

Though Raido suspected Genma's motives—namely wanting to spend time with Kurenai—he complied without complaint. He and Guy moved to the front, while Ebisu and Washi took the center.

As the group fell into formation, Yuji and Noma glanced back, their approving smiles hinting at recognition of Genma's budding leadership.

---

For three days, they traveled relentlessly toward the Land of This Country. The grueling pace left little room for conversation, but along the way, small gestures provided solace.

Genma and Kurenai, for instance, walked hand in hand, their silent connection speaking volumes.

The Land of This Country was smaller than Konoha but had a certain charm. The inner and outer city design gave it a more "national" feel, with a palace at its center. Despite the winter season, the climate was mild, and the countryside was lush with greenery and the occasional purple winter blossoms.

Their journey ended atop a hill overlooking the nation. The beauty of the landscape lifted their spirits, even if only momentarily.

As they descended the hill, Guy resumed his training by walking on his hands, while Washi munched on dried sweet potatoes. Ebisu buried himself in a book, and Raido entertained himself with Genma's telescope. Meanwhile, Genma and Kurenai stayed close, quietly enjoying the moment.

The vibrant scenery and playful atmosphere helped ease the tension. However, as they entered the bustling streets, the group noticed something strange: the population was predominantly female, with only a few elderly men and children scattered among them.

"Why are there so few men?" Washi asked.

"Maybe they've already been conscripted," Raido suggested.

Genma frowned but chose not to speculate further.

---

Their arrival at the palace marked a turning point. They were led not to the formal council chambers but to a small, elegant courtyard, where the Daimyo awaited them.

The middle-aged ruler, with his slight paunch and ornate robes, greeted them warmly.

As he explained the situation, the mission's parameters became clearer: the task was indeed war-related but primarily involved supporting the nation's military forces. Importantly, they were not expected to fight to the death. If the tide turned against them, they were permitted to retreat.

The Daimyo's leniency was surprising but welcomed, though it left the group feeling conflicted. It went against the ninja way to prioritize personal safety over completing a mission.

Before the discussion concluded, Yuji stepped forward.

"Daimyo-sama, if I may, I have a request. Please allow our students to participate in the upcoming Military Arts Tournament. They will withdraw before the finals to avoid claiming any positions reserved for your people."

The Daimyo considered the request for a moment before nodding. "Very well. They may participate. But do not underestimate my soldiers—they are not easily beaten."

Yuji bowed deeply in gratitude, a sly smile playing on his lips as he glanced back at the students.
