Chapter 50: Chapter 50: Death Forest! Begin!
"What?!"
"This exam rule is so unreasonable!"
"Whether you accept it or not, you will be eliminated!"
"Since the decisive question is placed at the end, doesn't that mean all the previous questions are pointless?!"
"Who made this rule? I want to report it!"
"Unfortunately, I made the rules for this exam."
Morino Ibiki's face remained stern, his expression radiating an unquestionable authority.
The examination room immediately fell silent.
This examiner was not someone to be trifled with.
"I'll give you three minutes to decide whether you want to stay. Think carefully and don't drag your teammates down!"
As soon as Morino Ibiki finished speaking, a three-minute countdown began.
Faced with this dilemma, several candidates hesitated before slowly raising their hands. Some withdrew for themselves, while others didn't want to risk their teammates losing their opportunity to take the Chūnin exam in the future.
Morkel glanced at Naruto, communicating with him through telepathy.
"Don't give up so easily," Morkel persuaded. "As long as we can solve the last question, we won't be eliminated. Trust me."
With years of rigorous study and solving countless practice questions, Morkel had full confidence in his ability to uncover a solution. No matter how tricky Morino Ibiki's question was, he believed he could find the answer.
If he couldn't solve it, then no one in the exam room would be able to.
That was Morkel's absolute faith in his intellect.
Before they knew it, the three-minute countdown had ended.
More than half of the candidates had left the examination room.
Ibiki scanned the remaining hopefuls with sharp eyes before making his announcement.
"Now, I declare that everyone present has passed the first round of the Chūnin exam! You have successfully advanced to the next stage!"
"What the hell?!"
A stunned silence fell over the room.
"But we haven't even answered the last question!" one candidate protested, while others murmured in agreement.
"The choice I just gave you was the last question," Ibiki explained. "Choosing to stay meant you answered correctly. Choosing to leave meant you failed."
He paused before continuing, "I don't believe in relying on the uncertainty of the next test. A ninja should always be ready to take risks."
"So what was the point of the first nine questions?!" another candidate asked angrily.
"That was a test of your ability to gather information," Ibiki replied. "Cheating was allowed during the written test. The students who were eliminated were simply too unskilled at it."
A satisfied smile played on Ibiki's lips as he declared, "For those who survived the first forty-five minutes and answered the final question correctly, congratulations. The door to the next stage of the Chūnin exam is now open for you!"
Before anyone could fully process what had just happened, a dark shadow suddenly hurtled toward the examination room window at high speed.
"Bang!"
The window shattered as a figure flipped inside and struck a dramatic pose.
"Hi! Hello, everyone!" the newcomer called out.
"I am the examiner for the second round of the Chūnin exam, Mitarashi Anko!"
Morkel observed the new examiner, finding her personality somewhat reminiscent of Naruto's.
Ibiki smirked from the sidelines. "No one is responding to you, Anko. Embarrassing."
"Roar!" Anko growled playfully before turning back to Ibiki with a teasing remark. "Why are there so many candidates left? Did you go easy on them?"
Ibiki grinned. "This year, we have some talented contenders."
"Oh? Let's see if they can survive my test," Anko said with amusement.
Then, without missing a beat, she clapped her hands. "Alright! Follow me to the location of the second exam!"
—
Konoha Village, in front of the 44th Training Ground.
Mitarashi Anko stood before the gathered candidates, scanning them with a smirk.
"Welcome to the 44th Training Ground, also known as the Forest of Death!"
She gestured toward the massive area beyond the fence. "This training ground has 44 gates surrounding it, with a river running through the middle and dense forests on both sides. A tower stands in the center, where the mission handovers take place."
She continued, "The distance from the outer fence to the central tower is approximately 10 kilometers, meaning the entire area spans around 310 square kilometers."
The candidates murmured among themselves as they took in the vast expanse before them.
"You will have five days—120 hours—to engage in a battle for the scrolls within this terrain," Anko announced. "Each team will receive a scroll labeled either 'Heaven' or 'Earth.' Your objective is to bring both a 'Heaven' scroll and an 'Earth' scroll to the central tower before the deadline. Only then will you pass this stage."
Naruto frowned, looking at the dense trees. "Wait, won't we starve in there for five days?"
Akimichi Chōji's eyes widened. "Yeah! That's way too long without food!"
Anko grinned. "Oh, don't worry. There are plenty of poisonous insects and wild beasts in the forest. You won't starve."
The candidates fell into uneasy silence.
Morkel, however, was more concerned about the elimination rate.
Each team only had one scroll, but they needed both to pass. This meant that at least half the teams would be eliminated. And that was assuming everyone survived. The Forest of Death was infamous for its deadly wildlife and hidden dangers.
Anko smirked at their nervous expressions.
"This stage is far more difficult than any mission you've faced before," she said.
She then picked up a thick stack of papers. "Next, everyone will receive a death waiver form. Since combat between ninjas is allowed, serious injuries and even deaths are common. You have thirty minutes to decide whether to sign."
"After thirty minutes, teams with signed forms can collect their scrolls from the designated huts."
Morkel took the form and didn't even bother reading it. Without hesitation, he signed his name. He had come this far—there was no turning back now.
Naruto and Sasuke followed suit, both equally determined.
After submitting his form, Morkel suddenly recalled an important matter—his payment from helping others cheat in the first exam.
He approached a team from Kusagakure, extending his hand. "I gave you the answers in the first exam. We agreed on 1,000 copper coins per person."
To his surprise, the Kusagakure ninja smirked. "What are you talking about? We answered everything ourselves."
"Yeah, you must be mistaken," another one chimed in, feigning innocence.
Morkel's eyes narrowed. "No money?"
His voice was calm, but there was an unmistakable edge to it. "Since you're breaking the agreement, the price just went up. Five thousand copper coins. Each."
The Kusagakure ninja sneered. "What proof do you have that we cheated?"
Morkel didn't argue. Instead, he memorized their faces before walking away. The Forest of Death had no rules against fighting. He would collect his debt soon enough.
Several other candidates also refused to pay, following the Kusagakure team's example. Only one team honored their agreement and handed Morkel the money.
Morkel remained silent, his expression unreadable.
What belonged to him—he would take back.
Soon, the thirty-minute deadline passed.
At precisely 2:00 PM, all teams entered the 44th Training Ground through randomly assigned gates.
Anko grinned wickedly.
"Chūnin Exam, begin!"
