Chapter 51: Chapter 51: Sarutobi Hiruzen Steps Down

The Land of the Sarutobi Clan

Early morning in the peaceful land of the Sarutobi clan was suddenly shattered by frantic shouting.

"Something terrible has happened! Something terrible has happened!" Two clan members ran wildly through the village, their faces pale with panic and terror.

Their voices echoed sharply across the serene valley, breaking the stillness. It was clear something had shaken them to their core — something frightening enough to disrupt the usual calm of the clan.

Hearing the commotion, curious villagers began emerging from their homes, their eyes wide with concern. Whispers spread quickly as more people gathered, trying to piece together the source of the chaos.

The two men stumbled forward, their steps uneven as their panic grew more evident. One grabbed the other's arm for support, but neither could calm themselves enough to speak clearly.

Suddenly, from a traditional wooden house near the village center, a stern voice bellowed, "Hey! What are you yelling about so early in the morning?" The Great Elder of the clan stepped outside, his brow furrowed in irritation.

His usually calm face now showed a mix of anger and confusion. "What on earth is going on with you two?" he demanded.

The panicked men barely noticed his displeasure as they rushed over, panting heavily. Their breaths came in short, ragged gasps. "Great Elder, something terrible has happened!" they exclaimed in unison, their voices trembling with dread.

The Great Elder's frown deepened. "Tell me what happened. Don't waste time with nonsense!" His tone was sharp but tinged with concern.

The two men exchanged glances, then the first spoke, struggling to get the words out: "The clan leaders... all the major families in Konoha... they are uniting... to force the clan leader to step down."

"What?!" The Great Elder staggered back a few steps, his face draining of color.

If a nearby villager hadn't caught his arm in time, he might have fallen to the ground.

"Why would this happen?" he whispered hoarsely, disbelief flooding his voice.

The other elders quickly gathered as the news spread. The second elder stepped forward, his brows knitted tightly. "What is going on? Who would dare challenge the clan leader now?"

The third and fourth elders appeared behind him, equally confused and alarmed.

The Great Elder raised his head, eyes bloodshot from worry and sleepless nights. "I fear... Sarutobi Hiruzen's position as Hokage is no longer secure," he said quietly.

The assembled elders exchanged shocked looks. Many had trusted Hiruzen implicitly. How could the clans turn against him now?

"But Hiruzen has done so much for us all! Didn't he already collect the necessary funds?" one elder asked, his voice tinged with desperation.

The Great Elder sighed deeply. "It is precisely because of that money. The major families have grown dissatisfied with him. They've united to force him to abdicate."

A heavy silence fell. Several elders sank to their knees, overwhelmed by despair. "What do we do now?" one whispered.

---

Meanwhile, inside the Sarutobi residence, Hiruzen himself stirred awake, yawning as he stretched his tired limbs.

He had been working late into the previous night, toiling endlessly to gather funds for the clan's obligations. His body ached, and his mind was weary from the endless pressure.

He'd barely had a chance to sleep when the morning chaos jolted him out of bed.

His mood darkened as he stepped outside the courtyard, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.

"What on earth is happening?" he muttered, frowning.

Just then, the Great Elder stormed out of his home, pointing an accusing finger at Hiruzen. "You! If it weren't for your greed, none of this would be happening!"

Hiruzen's confusion deepened. "I don't understand," he said carefully. "What have I done wrong?"

"The major families are gathering at the Hokage building right now to discuss your abdication!" the fourth elder growled, his voice heavy with contempt.

Hiruzen's heart sank. His mind raced to recall what could have gone so wrong.

Had his efforts to collect the money stirred up resentment? He thought back to the previous day and suddenly the realization hit him like a wave.

"No..." he whispered, eyes wide with shock.

---

Outside the Hokage building, the atmosphere was tense and electric. A growing crowd had gathered, their voices rising with anger and frustration.

Word had spread quickly about Hiruzen's recent demands, and the villagers felt betrayed by the Hokage they had once trusted.

Among the crowd, Shimura Danzō blended in silently, observing the restless villagers with a calculating smile.

He felt a surge of satisfaction as he witnessed the growing resentment toward Hiruzen. In his heart, he already imagined himself stepping into the position of Hokage once Hiruzen was forced to resign.

"Hiruzen's time is up," Danzō thought smugly. "The Third Hokage's reign will end today."

Suddenly, a cry rang out from the crowd: "Look! The Third Hokage is coming!"

All heads turned to see Sarutobi Hiruzen hurrying toward them, his expression grim.

His heart sank further as he saw the angry faces that greeted him.

He stepped onto the makeshift stage, trembling slightly. His eyes scanned the crowd of clan patriarchs and villagers, filled with a mix of sadness, regret, and resignation.

He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out.

An uncomfortable silence settled over the crowd as everyone waited for his explanation.

Danzō's smile faded slightly. If Hiruzen managed to defend himself eloquently, his plans could be ruined.

But he knew his old friend was no orator; his words were often blunt and ineffective in moments of crisis.

Determined not to let Hiruzen regain any ground, Danzō shouted loudly: "Out! Get out of here!"

The crowd quickly picked up the chant: "Get out! Get out!"

The uproar drowned out any chance Hiruzen had to speak.

---

Hiruzen sighed deeply, feeling utterly defeated.

He realized this was a battle he could no longer win. The major families had united against him, and his fate was sealed.

He thought back to the heavy burden he had carried—demanding 500 million from the major clans in a single day had indeed been harsh.

But it was a burden he could not avoid.

If he failed to deliver the money to Black Zetsu, he knew he would lose not just his position, but also his honor and reputation.

At least now, though forced out, he would be remembered as a leader who took responsibility—not as a villain caught in disgraceful scandal.

"I was wrong," Hiruzen admitted quietly to himself. "I pushed too hard, and I accept the consequences."

Slowly, he removed the Hokage hat from his head and bowed deeply to the villagers below.

For the first time in history, Sarutobi Hiruzen, the revered Third Hokage, was being forced to step down.

It was a moment filled with bitter tragedy and somber reflection.

---

Shimura Danzō's face lit up with triumph as the crowd's anger reached a fever pitch.

"Hiruzen is finally gone," he whispered to himself, barely able to contain his joy. "The path is clear. The next Hokage will be me."

---

The Aftermath

As the crowd dispersed, the elders gathered to discuss the clan's uncertain future.

The Great Elder sat heavily on a wooden bench, his face lined with worry.

"How did it come to this?" he wondered aloud.

The second elder responded, "Hiruzen tried to carry the burden of the clan's debts alone. But the major families couldn't bear it any longer."

A hush fell over the group.

Even though they had lost their leader, they knew that the clan had to survive.

Peter, a young but respected member of the Sarutobi clan, stepped forward.

"We must unite now more than ever," he said firmly. "The clan's strength lies in our unity, not in the whims of any one leader."

His words echoed in the silent air.

The clan had lost its Hokage, but it had not lost its spirit.

---

Reflection

Hiruzen returned home that evening, weary beyond measure.

He removed his traditional robes and stared at his reflection in a small mirror.

The eyes staring back at him were tired but still filled with a quiet dignity.

He knew his days as Hokage were over, but his service to the village was not.

"I will support the next Hokage," he vowed silently. "For the sake of the Sarutobi clan and Konoha."

Though forced to step down, his legacy would endure—carved into the hearts of those who believed in him.
