Chapter 24: Chapter 24
Eitan had finally registered his name with the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.
Since Miwako Sato was in charge of the archives, the two exchanged contact information.
Takagi, watching from the side, seemed a little uneasy.
Eitan gave him a gentle smile.
It was around ten o'clock when he left the police department—still early enough to check out cars.
Originally, he'd planned to wait until the technology in this world advanced a bit more before buying one. But lately, not having a car had become a genuine inconvenience.
---
Tokyo was massive.
To choose a car, Eitan had already visited several 4S stores. By now, he'd even left Beika and crossed into neighboring Egoda City.
Out of everything he'd seen, he was currently most drawn to a Mercedes-Benz E-W210 he spotted at the dealership in Egoda—the same model driven by Natsuki's "dad" in Initial D.
Even the fastest AE86 couldn't catch her once she got into that Mercedes.
Although he was well aware of the meme, he didn't mind it. Jokes aside, he simply liked the car after weighing all the pros and cons.
The current time was 4:51 PM.
Eitan strolled down the commercial street.
Ever since his transmigration, most of his time had been spent in Beika City. This was his first real venture into Egoda, and the unfamiliar streets gave him a sense of novelty.
Especially now, with schools out, students in uniforms completely different from those at Teitan High filled the sidewalks—and Eitan found the contrast refreshing.
"Even the newspaper headlines feel different…"
He had stopped by a convenience store to grab something when he noticed the local newspaper rack.
There were still plenty of articles about crimes and Detectives, but not nearly as many as in Beika. Instead, a single figure dominated the front pages:
"New Heist Notice!"
"Kaitou Kid Strikes Again?!"
"Inspector Nakamori's Arrest Declaration"
"Kaitou VS Police!"
"Museum Gem Targeted!"
Kaitou Kid.
Egoda City was, after all, his primary territory. Eitan had long been curious about him.
He already knew that Kaitou Kid—Kaito Kuroba—had been active even before Conan Edogawa's appearance. In fact, in the original timeline, Shinichi Kudo and Kaitou Kid had already crossed paths before Conan's transformation, though that was treated as a side story.
Just then, a group of high school girls passed by, chatting loudly.
"Hey, hey, I heard that fortune teller is here today!"
"Which fortune teller?"
"The one with the crystal ball! She's set up a stall!"
"No way—that fortune teller?!"
"Yes! They say she's scary accurate! My friend confessed after taking her advice, and it worked instantly!"
"You serious?"
"Totally! And it's not just fortune-telling. I swear I saw her go poof! and vanish in a cloud of smoke!"
"Okay, now you're telling ghost stories."
"Where is she?"
"Just ahead! Come on!"
Eitan, overhearing the conversation, paused.
Fortune-telling, huh…
Given that this was Egoda City, the mention of a "mysterious fortune teller" could only refer to one person. And Eitan was definitely curious.
He turned and followed the direction the girls had gone.
Before long, he came across a strange sight tucked beside an alley near a sushi restaurant.
Calling it a "stall" didn't quite fit.
There was only a high, ornate table—something between a summoning altar and a witch's cauldron—encircled by four sculpted snake heads. At the center sat a gleaming crystal ball, radiating an eerie, mystical glow.
"Excuse me, what's the success rate if I confess to the person I like?"
A high school girl stood in front of the crystal ball, her voice full of anticipation.
The fortune teller, wrapped tightly in a gray cloak that obscured even her face, hovered her hands over the glowing sphere. After a moment, she replied in a calm voice:
"The success rate is zero. The person you like already has a girlfriend."
"…What? That can't be…"
"However, if you're willing to wait, he'll break up soon."
"R-Really!?"
"Yes. But it'll be because he cheated—and he'll move on immediately after."
As the fortune teller finished her sentence, the girl burst into tears and ran off.
This one's a bit mischievous...
Eitan noted silently.
Still, the line behind her remained long. Everyone wore the same expression—hopeful, anxious, clinging to the possibility of good news.
The "Elusive Fortune Teller" had become something of an urban legend in Egoda City. No one knew where she came from or how old she was. Some even doubted if she was human. But one thing was certain—her predictions were eerily accurate. She could seemingly peer into a person's very soul.
Yet her appearances were random. She came and went as she pleased, without pattern or warning.
Eitan joined the line.
Most of those waiting were high school girls, though here and there, a few office workers lingered. Each took their turn, asked a question, and left—either dejected or delighted, depending on the result.
(Hehe~)
Under her cloak, Koizumi Akako was enjoying herself.
As the legitimate heir to the Red Magic, Akako had mastered a broad range of mystical arts—fortune-telling, alchemy, curses, potion-making. She could do it all. But what she enjoyed most was fortune-telling.
In this modern age, reckless use of magic was dangerous. Fortune-telling, however, remained subtle—an art still tolerated, still effective.
"Next," she said, not even bothering to look up as the previous client walked away.
"Excuse me," a calm male voice said, "Can you help me find out someone's real name?"
"Find a name?"
The unusual request gave her pause.
She finally looked up—and froze.
Just one glance.
In that instant, her world shifted. The colors around her distorted, drained of vibrancy, replaced by a heavy, oppressive aura of death.
Standing before her, the man gave off a presence more vivid and suffocating than anyone she had ever encountered.
Her heart clenched.
He was still, his expression calm and composed, but…
His voice, though gentle, carried the silence of a tomb. And his eyes—his eyes were supposed to be black, but to her, they appeared crimson, as if soaked in blood.
They were the eyes of death. The gaze of a Reaper.
No life. No warmth. Just that quiet, overwhelming stillness.
This man is dangerous.
Koizumi Akako had never seen anything like him. Her sixth sense screamed. For the first time in her life, it wasn't just intuition—it was survival instinct.
"If you want to divine someone's name," she said slowly, carefully, "you'll need something that carries their aura… something personal."
Eitan's heart stirred.
He looked at her hands—slender, elegant, resting lightly on the crystal ball. Given the atmosphere and the magic tools, it was safe to assume this cloaked figure was Koizumi Akako.
"I see," he replied. "Once I acquire the item, I'll trouble you again."
"…Alright."
Though she gave a polite answer, Koizumi Akako had no intention of ever seeing this man again.
As Eitan stepped aside to let the next person through, Akako released a breath she didn't realize she was holding.
I am not doing this again.
Nope. Not for a while.
She stood abruptly. "That's it! Fortune-telling ends here for today!"
A chorus of disappointed sighs rose from the crowd.
But they were used to this. The "Elusive Fortune Teller" vanished just as unpredictably as she appeared.
With a sweep of her cloak, she concealed her tools—and then disappeared in a puff of purple smoke.
It really was her...
Watching from the sidelines, Eitan thought to himself.
He would need to build a good relationship with her.
Eventually.
