Chapter 21: Chapter 21
Despite the subtle bitterness, no one else seemed to notice anything strange.
Even Conan was sipping coffee quietly—something he rarely had the chance to enjoy since his transformation.
Across the table, Kazuhiko's younger brother Akin mimicked everyone and took a sip… only to grimace immediately at the bitterness.
"Everyone, please try the cake I made," Kazuhiko's mother said warmly as she returned with a tray.
Spotting her son pulling a face, she smiled and quickly fed him a piece.
"There, have some cake to wash down that bitterness."
She fed him several more bites before standing up with a smile.
"Come on now, everyone—have some!"
At her insistence, people began picking up their forks. The reactions were overwhelmingly positive.
"Eitan-san, you should try some too."
"Thank you. But I'm not fond of sweets. Just leave it here—I'll try it later."
"But cake's best when it's fresh. At least take a small bite first and tell me what you think."
The request was a little too insistent to brush off.
Would an average host push this hard just for cake?
Eitan took a forkful, casting a glance toward Akin, who was now quietly rubbing his cheek—apparently suffering from a toothache after just a few bites.
"…The flavor's great. Not overly sweet."
"I'm so glad you think so."
With a pleasant nod, the woman gathered the tray and returned to the kitchen. Kazuhiko, having finished his coffee, stood up, pulled out a cigarette, and walked straight toward the yard.
"Hey, Kazuhiko, have some cake too!"
"So annoying," he muttered and disappeared through the door.
His mother made no move to stop him, quietly clearing the table.
Buzz—
Eitan's phone vibrated.
A message from Gin:
"Wakamatsu Toshihide. Current address: Room 203, 7th floor, Nishizaki Apartment, Block 6, 72 Beika Town. Lives alone. Goes to the gym nightly at 8:00 PM except Wednesdays, his day off."
The details were thorough—too thorough. But Eitan skimmed past most of it.
Lives alone, huh?
Judging by that routine, there wouldn't be a better time to act.
He typed a simple "Received" and closed the message.
Moments later, Ran quietly leaned over.
"Onisan, should we head out?"
"Yes. Let's go."
Eitan slipped his phone away and stood up.
Ran gave a polite farewell. She hesitated a little when passing Wakamatsu but still offered a small wave.
He ignored her.
But when Eitan smiled and began his goodbyes, Wakamatsu scoffed under his breath.
"Hmph. Coward."
Before anyone could react—
"Ah—!!"
A scream rang out from the yard.
---
Note: Wakamatsu Toshihide is an original anime character. In the original plot, he tried to force a kiss on Ran—only to mistakenly grab Conan and get decked instead.

"Kazuhiko Minagawa has just taken his last breath."
"Cause of death appears to be poisoning."
"Ms. Watanabe Hiromi… the deceased collapsed shortly after eating your handmade chocolate, correct?"
Kazuhiko Minagawa was dead.
That earlier scream had come from Hiromi, who had rushed outside after him—only to see him choking and falling to the ground.
The police arrived swiftly.
After securing the scene and removing the body, Inspector Megure immediately began his questioning.
Everyone had been gathered in the living room.
"…Yes. I gave Kazuhiko chocolate," Hiromi admitted, trembling as she sat on the sofa, tears streaming down her cheeks.
He had gone out to smoke, and she'd followed to calm him down.
As a peace offering, she handed him a handmade chocolate. He accepted, took a few bites—and then collapsed.
Inspector Megure frowned, stroking his chin as he scrutinized her face.
From what she'd described, her chocolate was the last thing he ate.
Naturally, suspicion fell on her.
Still… the depth of her grief made him hesitate.
Off to the side, Conan stood silently, deep in thought.
Though Hiromi was the obvious suspect, something about the situation didn't sit right.
Everyone else still felt like a suspect.
"Officer, could you please examine the coffee and cake here?"
Conan Edogawa glanced at Eitan, full of competitive spirit and ready for a classic deduction battle—only to hear Eitan calmly speak up first.
Inspector Megure turned immediately from Hiromi.
"Did you find something, Eitan-kun?"
"I wouldn't call it definitive, but… I noticed the coffee tasted subtly off."
"Off?"
"We didn't notice anything strange."
"Tch. He's just trying to act smart," Wakamatsu scoffed from the side, crossing his arms.
Eitan didn't respond. His eyes lifted from his notebook and briefly swept across the room—landing on Kazuhiko's mother, who had suddenly stiffened. Then his gaze shifted to little Akin beside her.
"Akin, does your tooth still hurt?"
"…Yeah."
The boy nodded gloomily, clutching his cheek.
Eitan turned to the woman next to him.
"You must usually be strict about sweets. I assume you forbid him from eating anything sugary while he has cavities?"
"…Yes, otherwise it'd get worse," she said quietly.
"But when he sipped coffee earlier, you immediately gave him cake."
The woman's expression stiffened.
"And just now, despite me saying I don't care for sweets and would try it later, you still insisted I taste the cake immediately."
"…"
"I was curious, to be honest. Most people don't push that hard. I thought maybe you just cared about feedback."
"I just… put a lot of effort into it…"
"Oh, it's good. The flavor's balanced—sweet, but not overwhelming."
Eitan nodded casually. "But I wondered… were you trying to ensure that everyone except Kazuhiko ate that cake?"
The woman froze. Her fingers clenched the hem of her sleeve.
Inspector Megure narrowed his eyes.
"You're saying the coffee might've been poisoned… and the cake could contain an antidote?"
"It's only a possibility. Maybe I'm reading too darkly into it."
"Still… anything suspicious needs to be examined."
With a wave of his hand, Megure signaled the officers.
The woman opened her mouth, but no excuse came. Her face drained of color as the evidence was collected and taken for testing.
She hadn't even gotten the chance to execute her framing plan.
Watching her reactions, Conan instantly understood—Eitan was right.
But…
What the hell?!
Who solves cases like this!?
He hadn't even had a chance to piece together the clues himself! Conan gritted his teeth in frustration as Eitan sat there quietly, flipping through his notebook without a care in the world.
Was he even trying to investigate further? He looked like someone who didn't think there was any other possibility at all!
The worst part? Conan couldn't even come up with a good counter-theory.
Not long after, an officer returned with the results.
"The coffee tested positive for poison."
At that moment, the woman collapsed to the floor.
Inspector Megure approached, cuffs in hand, but before he could speak, she began to cry and confessed everything.
Her motive was greed.
Kazuhiko wasn't her biological son—he was the child of her late sister. His parents had died in a car accident seven years ago, and she, as his aunt, took custody.
But now her husband's company was on the verge of collapse. The inheritance Kazuhiko received from his parents—still untouched—had become too tempting.
Her plan had been to poison him and frame someone else. But Eitan had seen through it before she could even act.
After the confession, and the suspect was taken away, Ran and Sonoko quietly expressed their wish to leave.
Eitan nodded with a faint smile. "You two go ahead. I just need to visit the restroom."
In the hallway, he ran into Wakamatsu.
"Mr. Wakamatsu," he said evenly.
"Hm?" Wakamatsu turned with an annoyed expression. "What now?"
"I was just thinking," Eitan replied with that same polite smile. "For someone so eager to call others 'cowards,' you must be the type of man who never falters… someone who would never back down when things get critical."
Wakamatsu blinked. "What are you babbling about?"
"I'm very much looking forward to your performance."
Eitan's tone was pleasant, his face handsome and relaxed—but the smile felt… off.
Wakamatsu frowned, then sneered and spat to the side.
Eitan just kept smiling.
There was no emotion in his eyes.
As he turned to walk away, he took out his phone, tapped a few buttons… and deleted the message from earlier without hesitation.
