Chapter 66: Chapter 66: Hiruzen’s Decision
Hokage Building, operations meeting room.
A map of the ninja world was hanging in front of the conference room.
The map used lines of different colors to outline the various defense lines of the three-nation coalition's assault on the Land of Fire.
On both sides of the long conference table, which should have been filled with Konoha's top leadership, only the famed Konoha F4 and the director of the Intelligence Division remained.
The rest of Konoha's core forces had long since been dispatched to various frontlines.
Boom boom boom—
"Come in."
There was a sudden knock at the door, and Hiruzen Sarutobi frowned slightly.
He had already instructed that no one interrupt the meeting unless there was urgent intelligence.
Could it be that something had changed on the Grass Country front?
"Hokage-sama!"
Hiruzen perked up at the familiar voice and saw the young figure pushing open the door.
Back already? Could it be—the Kannabi Bridge was destroyed?
"Mission accomplished!"
Minato stood at attention, saluted crisply, and bowed.
"Good, good!"
"Well done!"
"Minato, once this war ends, I'll see that you're duly rewarded with merit!"
Hiruzen's weary expression finally softened, and he praised him repeatedly.
Among the three fronts, the pressure from Iwagakure had been the most intense.
Now that the bridge had been destroyed, Iwa's supply lines were cut, leaving their frontline forces trapped in the Grass Country battlefield.
Hiruzen felt as invigorated as if he'd gulped down a bowl of iced water in the peak of summer.
Hmph. Old fox Ōnoki, let's see how you weasel your way out of this one!
"In that case, Minato, head to the Grass Country immediately and support Hyūga Hizashi in driving back Iwagakure."
"As for Team Kakashi, have them transfer to the Kirigakure front and assist Fugaku against the Mist."
Hiruzen's voice was resolute.
The battlefield was a chessboard.
And how he moved the pieces would determine Konoha's fate.
Now that Iwa's logistics were crippled, Hizashi just needed a little push to end the siege.
And Minato—Konoha's golden child—was that push.
With Minato's Flying Thunder God Technique, even a solo deployment could shift the tide of war.
Meanwhile, Kirigakure's forces, having arrived by sea, were unrestricted by terrain and in full formation.
It was too much to expect Fugaku to manage alone.
In truth, this war had been instigated by the Fourth Raikage for personal revenge.
As long as Konoha could repel Iwa and Kiri separately, Kumogakure would be left isolated.
And then, retreat would be their only option.
Minato, with his unparalleled speed, was the only shinobi in Konoha who could be everywhere at once.
He was Hiruzen's queen on the board.
Once Iwa fell, Minato could leap to aid Fugaku.
Victory would be inevitable.
"Hokage-sama, I still have something else to report."
Minato's brows furrowed slightly.
Obito still hadn't been found. If they simply pushed forward...
"Oh? Speak."
Did something unforeseen happen?
Hiruzen noticed the weight in Minato's voice and felt a faint unease rise.
"Yes. During the mission, Kakashi and his team were ambushed by hundreds of Iwa-nin."
"Although the enemy was wiped out by Kakashi, Uchiha Obito vanished mysteriously."
"Based on the scene, I suspect he was taken by a master of Earth Release."
"I ask for three days to search for Obito before rejoining the front."
Minato bowed deeply. He understood this was war, but he couldn't ignore a comrade's life.
Kakashi took out a hundred Iwa-nin solo?
Hiruzen's eyes twitched at that detail.
Clean background. Exceptional talent. Impeccable loyalty.
Maybe it's time to begin grooming him further.
As for Obito... Uchiha, second tomoe already?
Not bad.
Hiruzen had placed him in Minato's squad to strengthen the connection with the Uchiha clan.
But in terms of irreplaceable value...
There were others. Better ones.
Shisui—descendant of Uchiha Kagami, Hiruzen's old comrade from the Second Hokage's guard.
He'd tested Shisui multiple times already.
Unlike most Uchiha, Shisui didn't seem shackled by clan loyalty.
He valued the village above all.
If Shisui replaced Obito, it would be a clean solution.
Of course, losing a gifted young shinobi was regrettable.
But war was war.
Sacrifice was inevitable.
Hiruzen slowly stroked his goatee and prepared to speak, when a cold, sharp voice interrupted him.
"Hmph. Sentimentality."
Danzo spoke, arms crossed and half-hidden in shadow.
"We're in the middle of a war, and you want to stall it for a missing genin?"
"Do you know how many more will die because of your precious three days?"
"And for an Uchiha, no less..."
Danzo's disdain was palpable.
The man never missed an opportunity to grind his axe against the Uchiha.
"Enough, Danzo!"
Hiruzen snapped, his voice sharp.
"The Uchiha are a core part of this village. Words that fracture our unity help no one."
Then he turned to Minato, softening his tone.
"I understand how you feel."
"Obito is a good boy. Hearing he's missing... it breaks my heart as well."
"But this is war. The flames won't wait."
"I believe if Obito were here—if he saw what was at stake—he'd gladly sacrifice himself to protect the lives of his comrades."
"Of course, no one is abandoned in this village."
"When the war is over, I'll personally authorize an Anbu team to assist you in locating him. Is that acceptable?"
Oh~
Classic Hokage speech. Passionate. Logical. Politically bulletproof.
Minato sighed silently.
He didn't agree with it, but he couldn't refute it either.
He just hoped Obito was only imprisoned somewhere... not lost forever.
"Yes, Hokage-sama. I'll take my leave."
"Very well."
Hiruzen nodded, waving his hand.
Minato bowed and exited, the weight of both war and worry on his shoulders.
The meeting resumed.
Danzo and the other two advisors quickly rejoined the conversation.
As for Uchiha Obito's disappearance?
It was never mentioned again.
