Chapter 13: Ch13: Children’s Playground
After hugging for a while, Kakashi started detailing the Jutsu so it would be easier for her to visualise.
"The clown tore off pieces, laughing while the screams echoed," Kakashi said quietly, his voice low and serious. "Even though it's all an illusion, the brain will believe it. The body will react, and fear will take over completely."
Kurenai's eyes were bright with excitement. "I think I get it. The mind tricks the body into feeling the pain… making the fear so real it's paralyzing."
Kakashi nodded. "Exactly. Once it's fully developed, I might even use this genjutsu myself in battle."
She smiled at that.
"That's terrifying, Kurenai. Let's find some volunteers tomorrow morning. We'll need real people to test and perfect this." Kakashi said.
Kurenai's blush deepened as she said, "Um…" Clearly aware of what Kakashi meant by volunteers.
…
The morning sun was just beginning to rise, casting soft golden light through the forest canopy. The air smelled fresh and cool.
Kakashi sat beside the campfire, now nothing more than a bed of cold ashes. He hadn't slept much the night before.
Instead, he kept watch while Kurenai rested. His fingers carefully traced the fine lines of sealing tags spread before him, adjusting the ink with precise care.
Suddenly, footsteps approached from behind.
He turned to see Kurenai walking toward him, brushing her long, dark hair back from her face. She looked refreshed, her skin glowing from washing up with the water they had brought from the inn.
"Good morning," Kakashi greeted her softly, a warm smile touching his lips as he admired her.
"Morning," she replied, sliding onto his lap instead of sitting beside him. Without hesitation, she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him deeply.
Kakashi blinked, momentarily surprised, but quickly returned the kiss with equal passion. When they finally parted, she nestled her face against his neck, letting out a contented sigh.
"You've changed fast," Kakashi teased with a chuckle. "From shy and reserved to bold and confident in just a few days."
"Maybe I'm just comfortable now," she said, voice muffled against his skin.
They stayed like that for a while, quiet, peaceful, perfectly content in each other's arms. Kakashi gently patted her back.
"We should get moving soon," he said softly.
Kurenai nodded, slowly rising. Together, they packed their belongings and set off toward the main road leading back to Konoha.
…
But peace didn't last long.
Suddenly, three rogue ninjas dropped down from the trees ahead of them. From their chakra signatures, Kakashi recognized them as Chunin-level. Their ragged clothing and harsh expressions marked them as dangerous and unpredictable.
Kakashi glanced at Kurenai and smirked. "Volunteers," he said quietly, referring to their earlier joke about needing people to test new techniques.
Kurenai chuckled in response, already preparing herself for a fight.
But Kakashi was faster.
With a swift movement, he unsealed his Sharingan eye and locked gaze with the three rogue ninjas.
Within seconds, his genjutsu took hold.
All three collapsed into unconsciousness, bound tightly in illusions.
Kakashi calmly walked over and secured them with ninja wire. Then he scanned the area.
"We can't start here," he said firmly.
He led Kurenai deeper into the forest. After a short walk, they arrived at a wide clearing.
Kakashi performed a series of hand signs. "Earth Release: Stone Room."
The ground trembled, and a simple but sturdy square room of stone rose from the earth. The walls glistened faintly in the morning light.
He opened the door and tossed the unconscious ninjas inside.
Kurenai crossed her arms. "Now what?" she asked.
"Now we experiment," Kakashi said, making a mock-serious face like a mad scientist ready to dissect his subjects.
Kurenai laughed at how out of character he was acting.
…
Inside the stone chamber, the two stood over the first unconscious Chunin.
"Let's start with one," Kakashi said.
They dragged the ninja outside and tied him securely to a tree.
Kurenai knelt before him and pressed her fingers into the seal on her wrist. She focused deeply, channeling chakra into activating Children's Playground.
At first… nothing happened.
The ninja just blinked, confused.
"Too weak," Kurenai sighed. "Not enough detail in the illusion."
"Try shaping the chakra slower," Kakashi suggested. "Let it build up before releasing it."
They tried again, and again. Dozens of times.
Each attempt failed. The illusion was too quick, or the image was off, or it didn't scare the ninja.
Frustration built.
But finally, it worked.
The ninja's eyes widened in horror. His body froze, trembling uncontrollably.
Kurenai looked up, a small smile breaking through her frustration.
Next, they dragged out the second ninja.
She knelt, focused, and unleashed the genjutsu once more.
It began with the soft sound of children laughing.
The ninja blinked, confused.
Then his body stiffened.
He saw the clown.
Tall and pale, with glowing eyes and a cruel grin.
His mouth opened in a silent scream.
His eyes filled with raw terror.
He twisted and shook, crying out in agony only his mind could hear.
His body trembled violently.
His brain believed the illusion, he was being eaten alive.
Though there were no real wounds, his pain receptors fired, triggered by chakra and illusion combined.
After a minute, Kurenai released the genjutsu.
The ninja collapsed, gasping and sweating, eyes wide with lingering fear.
Kurenai stared at her hands, stunned.
"It worked," she whispered.
"And it's terrifying," Kakashi added, watching closely.
He could tell that if she put even more chakra into the illusion, it would become even stronger, more terrifying, and more difficult to resist.
After a few more tries, they confirmed the technique's effectiveness.
The rogue Chunin were left trembling, broken by fear.
The two looked at each other, a shared weight settling between them.
This genjutsu had power, very dangerous power.
They silently agreed: this had to be kept secret.
If someone with malicious intent discovered this jutsu, it could cause catastrophic damage.
Neither wanted to be responsible for that.
…
Later, as they packed up to leave the clearing, Kakashi glanced at Kurenai.
"This is our secret," he said quietly.
Kurenai nodded. "Some things are better left in the shadows."
They walked back toward Konoha, the early sun climbing higher, casting long shadows through the trees.
The forest was quiet again, peaceful, for now.
But deep down, both knew that the Children's Playground genjutsu was a force to be reckoned with.
That night, lying side by side under the stars, Kurenai whispered softly, "Thank you for helping me."
Kakashi smiled and brushed a stray lock of hair from her face. "We're stronger together. Always."
And in the silence between them, the promise of more battles, and more victories, hung in the air.
