Chapter 97: Chapter 97: Recruitment
"Impressive." Liu A'dou heard a voice speaking near his ear.
But he remembered he was supposed to be resting on Themyscira. And the voice was male—besides himself, were there any other men on the island?
He opened his eyes. Liu A'dou realized he was no longer on Themyscira, but inside an enormous temple. In front of him stood a colossal statue, its toes taller than him. The statue rose into the clouds, its true form lost to sight. The voice had come from above it.
Damn, which divine figure is putting on a show in front of me? Liu A'dou raised his head and shouted, "Is that you, Zeus?" Lately, he'd only beaten Zeus's son—Zeus had reason to seek him out.
"Smart mortal. I am indeed the lord of Mount Olympus. You defeated my son, so I must reward you," said Zeus.
"...??" What was this logic? I beat your son, so you reward me? Liu A'dou wondered if he'd misheard.
"Mortal, I now appoint you as Pope, commander of the Twelve Gold Saints, to assist my daughter Athena in defending this world."
The voice of Zeus echoed with majestic power. He wasn't joking.
Liu A'dou's mind surged with speculation. What was Zeus after? Was this recruitment, a trap, or a calculated compromise?
Recruitment made the most sense. Zeus didn't need to frame mortals, nor would he need to make concessions to the man who indirectly caused his son's death. But placing A'dou by Athena's side meant one thing: Zeus feared Athena might one day surpass him. In the myths, Zeus had always been wary of his daughter. So he meant to plant A'dou as a spy in her camp.
Thinking this through, Liu A'dou responded, "Great Father of the Gods, it would be an honor. But why not let me serve at your side instead of helping that pampered girl Athena? I've seen her—she's just a spoiled goddess."
Zeus was pleased by this answer. Clearly, he'd chosen the right man.
"Your respect and loyalty are noted. By aiding my daughter, you aid me. I want you to manage the Gold Saints and act as my agent on Earth. Will you accept this?"
Zeus's plan was simple: since Athena suddenly had formidable warriors under her, he needed to preemptively control them. Assigning a mortal pope let him keep things balanced. If she refused, he'd use it as reason to suppress her. If she accepted, he might win the saints over to his side.
The gods of Olympus had emotions and selfish desires even worse than humans.
Zeus had observed Liu A'dou for a while and found him both powerful and lecherous. That latter trait was what sealed the deal—Zeus loved men with weaknesses he could exploit.
Becoming Pope wasn't a bad gig. Liu A'dou had always intended to harness the power of the saints anyway. "I accept, great God of All Gods." His flattery was flawless—"Father of the Gods" one moment, "God of All Gods" the next, which made Zeus beam with satisfaction.
"Mortal, I like your honesty." A beam of light shot down. Beside Liu A'dou appeared a woman in a long blue formal gown with a translucent blue silk shawl draped over her shoulders. Her golden hair was braided thickly and slicked back like it was fixed with gel.
"This is Elsa, the Lost Wanderer. I took her in ten thousand years ago. Now she is my most loyal servant. She will assist you in your duties. Cursed by frost, she can freeze anything in the world."
Zeus wasn't stupid. He knew to place a beautiful woman at A'dou's side.
But Liu A'dou cried inwardly—Zeus, do you think I've never seen Frozen? That outfit was obviously from Queen Elsa. And now you want to tell me she's some ancient traveler? That's a lie for toddlers. Though, maybe... maybe she's also a transmigrator?
Still—how could she still look so young after ten thousand years?
"You really ten thousand years old?"
Elsa said nothing.
Instead, Zeus replied, "She dislikes speaking. But yes, she truly has lived ten thousand years. Her body was frozen at the moment her powers awakened. Even if the universe perished, she would remain unchanged."
Poor girl. She's just like Conan and the others—eternally frozen in time. Liu A'dou thought for a moment, but figured Conan had it worse.
"She will assist you. And now, I gift you the staff of the Pope." Another beam of light shot down. A crescent moon scepter appeared in Liu A'dou's hand. "With this, you command the Twelve Saints. Farewell, mortal."
Liu A'dou blinked his eyes open—and found dozens of eyes staring at him.
Worse yet, he shouldn't even be here. This was Themyscira's bathhouse!
Damn you, Zeus! You're trying to get me killed!
"Ladies, sisters, this is all a mistake. I didn't see a thing," Liu A'dou said, shielding his eyes as he slowly backed away. "I'm leaving now!"
"Sisters, stop him! Don't let him escape!" someone shouted.
Liu A'dou was yanked into the water, and countless roaming hands reached out and groped him.
It was over. Someone had just grabbed a very sensitive spot. Liu A'dou hadn't expected the female warriors to be so ravenous. Being tossed into the bathhouse by Zeus was like a lamb thrown to wolves.
It's over. My chastity is doomed. I'm sorry, Ada-jie. Liu A'dou felt hopeless. So many wild and hungry women had pounced on him, giving him no chance to fight back. These warriors in heat were straight-up she-wolves. His face turned blank, completely stunned from being "played to death."
Riiip!
So cold!
Liu A'dou shot up from the now-freezing pool, wiping the water off his face. As he opened his eyes, he saw all the female warriors had turned into ice sculptures. Elsa stood coldly across from him, her eyes filled with disgust.
"It wasn't my fault," Liu A'dou tried to explain. When Elsa didn't respond, he continued, "Seriously, it's not! You saw how terrifying they were."
Elsa shot him a cold glare, turned, and walked off. Clearly, she now thought Liu A'dou was some pervert.
"This really wasn't my fault! Zeus, just you wait. One day I'll make you pay for this!" Liu A'dou cried to the heavens, then noticed no one was paying him any attention. He bent down and fished his scepter out of the water like he was scooping for koi.
Looking around at the icy statues, he called out, "Elsa? Miss Elsa? Come back and thaw them out!"
But Elsa was long gone, ignoring him completely. She wasn't the sister-loving queen from the movie, but a lonelier, colder version—stronger, and even more aloof.
Liu A'dou sighed. Ripple told him the girls weren't dead—just frozen.
"You thirsty she-wolves cool off here for now. I'll come back later and unfreeze you."
"Elsa, don't go!" Liu A'dou chased after her. "You've lived on Mount Olympus for ten thousand years. You don't know anyone here—I should introduce you."
But Elsa kept walking straight ahead until she reached the ruins, unsure where to go from there.
The battle had only just ended, but the Amazons celebrated first before cleaning up the battlefield and gathering their fallen. They weren't sentimental and didn't waste time crying. That's how the bathhouse scene even happened.
"Elsa, don't look at me like that!" Liu A'dou really felt wronged. He might like admiring women's bodies, but he'd never acted on any wicked thoughts. This whole thing was the she-wolves' fault!
"I trust my own eyes," Elsa replied coldly. She clearly wasn't as cheerful as her movie counterpart—she was colder, and not to be trifled with.
"But you misunderstood completely…" Liu A'dou was exasperated.
"Hey, what were you doing coming out of the bathhouse?" Diana was just heading there to wash off the stench of the undead, when she saw Liu A'dou stepping out—with a strange woman.
"This is Elsa, Queen of Ice and Snow, subordinate of Zeus," Liu A'dou introduced. "Elsa, this is Diana, Princess of the Amazons."
Elsa nodded. "I know. Pope, as the assistant appointed by Zeus, I hope you'll complete your divine mission soon."
…Diana and Liu A'dou both fell silent. Elsa really was cold.
"What's going on with Zeus?" Diana wondered aloud. Was Mount Olympus finally planning to intervene in the mortal realm again? "Liu, what's going on?"
"I've been appointed Pope of the Saints by Zeus, tasked with commanding the Saints and assisting Athena in defending Earth." Liu A'dou showed off the crescent scepter. "This stingy thing was a gift from Zeus."
Diana could feel the divine aura on the staff, but it was just a deterrent—something that worked on mortals. To someone decked out in divine gear like herself, it had no effect.
Zeus hadn't shown himself to mortals in ages. Diana wasn't sure what this meant. And why did he pick Liu A'dou instead of Ada—who had been the first to don a Gold Cloth?
"Elsa, now I remember! You're the ice witch who froze the Mediterranean!" Elsa didn't have divine blood, so she was labeled a "witch." In this world's mythology, she had a very different backstory—one even transmigrators wouldn't know.
Liu A'dou was shocked. Elsa was that powerful? He immediately declared, "Elsa, you'll be the Aquarius Saint!"
"…." Elsa replied with a silent "heh."
"Elsa, we're partners now. You can't keep acting this cold," Liu A'dou said. "Anyway, let's find Ada. She can teach you about the Cosmos."
Ada would be the teacher. As for Liu A'dou?
Obviously, he had to go unfreeze the girls in the bathhouse. No way could he let Ada find out he'd fallen into the women's pool.
"Diana, lend me a hand."
"What for?"
"Go in and cover the ice statues with blankets. Then I'll go back in."
Diana nodded. The fact Liu A'dou made that request showed he still had respect for women. It earned him a little more of her favor.
