Kaiju No.8: Monarch of Shadows

Chapter 16: The Golden Warrior’s Fury

Kikoru Shinomiya was a creature of pure, weaponized focus. As the Karasu dove, the world outside became a blur of steel and concrete, but in her mind, everything was crystal clear. The target, the sixty-second timeframe, the two sets of god-like eyes watching her every move—it all distilled down into a single, burning purpose.

I am not a toy. I am not a child. I am a Shinomiya.

"Activating primary weapon systems," she announced to the empty cockpit, her voice a cold, steady monotone that betrayed the fire in her heart. "Diverting all non-essential power to the forward particle cannon."

The stealth jet shuddered as energy was rerouted. A low, powerful hum filled the cockpit, the sound of a contained star waiting to be unleashed. The nose of the Karasu glowed with a faint, golden light.

High above, the Monarchess watched the small jet descend, a flicker of amusement in her molten eyes. [You send your pet to do the work of a king? How curious.]

Jin-Woo, hovering silently on Kaisel, didn't reply. He simply watched, his senses spread across the battlefield, monitoring every variable. He had given Kikoru the opening move for a reason. He needed to see her full capabilities, to understand the peak of this world's conventional power. And he needed to see how the Architects would react to it.

Below, the Architect's lab flashed to life. The moment the Karasu began its attack run, the complex's defenses activated. The air around the northern warehouse shimmered as a semi-translucent energy shield, hexagonal in pattern, snapped into existence. Simultaneously, hidden turrets rose from the rooftops, spitting streams of energized plasma at the descending jet.

"Evasive maneuvers!" Kikoru yelled, her hands flying across the controls. The Karasu, under her expert command, became a ghost. It jinked, rolled, and weaved through the plasma fire with impossible grace. The ruby-red bolts of energy sizzled past the cockpit, missing by inches.

"Pathetic," she scoffed, her confidence surging. She had faced far worse in JDF simulations. "Locking on. Firing in three… two… one…"

She slammed her thumb down on the firing stud.

A thick, lance of pure golden energy, silent and blindingly bright, erupted from the nose of the jet. It crossed the distance to the warehouse in a nanosecond, striking the hexagonal shield dead center.

The impact was immense. A dome of golden light bloomed over the warehouse, and the air cracked with the sound of tortured energy. But the shield held. It buckled and flickered violently, but it did not break.

"Impossible!" Kikoru gasped. "That was a full-power shot! It should have leveled a city block!"

[Your toys are insufficient, little shadow,] the Monarchess's voice purred in Jin-Woo's mind, dripping with condescension.

Jin-Woo ignored her. His gaze was fixed on the shield. It had held, yes, but he saw the truth of it. The energy was already failing. It had been drained by 90% in that single blast. The Architects had underestimated the raw power of this world's weaponry.

"Thirty seconds remaining, Shinomiya," Jin-Woo's calm voice cut through her comms, jolting her from her shock. "Your cannon needs time to recharge. You cannot fire again from the jet. Eject. Go."

The command was insane. Eject into a hail of plasma fire? But there was no hesitation in his voice. It was a tactical order, not a suggestion.

Kikoru's eyes blazed. He's right. A new plan, wild and reckless, formed in her mind. "Acknowledged, Monarch."

She pulled back on the stick, sending the Karasu into a steep, vertical climb. As the jet soared upward, she hit the ejection sequence. The cockpit canopy blew away, and her seat launched her into the sky, a tiny figure against the hazy clouds.

For a moment, she was suspended in the air, the plasma fire from the turrets now converging on her. But she was no longer just a pilot.

"Battle Suit, Full Power!" she commanded.

The golden armor around her flared with brilliant light. Energy conduits lit up across her limbs. A targeting reticle appeared in her HUD, locking onto the weakened shield below. From a compartment on her back, her personal weapon deployed, a massive, double-headed battle axe that hummed with contained energy. She grabbed it out of the air, its weight familiar and comforting.

She angled her body downward, a golden meteor beginning her descent. The plasma bolts came for her, but with a twist of her body and a flare of her suit's thrusters, she dodged and weaved, the energy bolts searing the air where she had been moments before.

It was a deadly, beautiful dance in the sky.

High above, the Monarchess's amusement faded, replaced by a flicker of genuine interest. [The toy has claws. A fiery little spirit. I approve.]

Kikoru ignored the world, ignored the gods watching her. Her focus was absolute. She fell toward the shield, her axe held high.

"I am Kikoru Shinomiya!" she screamed, the words a war cry against the heavens. "And you are nothing!"

She channeled all of her suit's energy, all of her rage, all of her pride, into the blade of her axe. The weapon glowed with a white-hot intensity, so bright it was painful to look at.

She struck the shield at the exact point the Karasu's blast had weakened it.

This time, there was no resistance. The shield shattered like a pane of sugar glass, exploding into a million shimmering, hexagonal fragments. Kikoru plunged through the dissipating energy and landed on the roof of the warehouse with a ground-shaking impact, her axe buried deep in the ferroconcrete.

She had done it. Ten seconds to spare.

She ripped her axe free, a triumphant grin on her face. But her victory was short-lived.

The roof of the warehouse began to slide open, revealing the dark, cavernous interior below. From the darkness, a low, guttural growl echoed, a sound that promised violence and pain. And then, two massive, bio-mechanical monstrosities rose from the depths. They were Kaiju-Hybrids, part beast, part machine, each easily the size of a tank, with armor plating, missile pods, and glowing red optical sensors that locked onto her.

They were the lab's guard dogs. And she had just landed in their kennel.

Kikoru's grin widened, becoming feral and bloodthirsty. "Good," she breathed, raising her glowing axe. "I was hoping for a real fight."
