Chapter 22: 22 Toshiro
Half a year had passed without notice.
Seasons had come and gone, and Tora's life gradually shifted. It wasn't just his residence that had changed—his school was now different too. His new world was filled with unfamiliar rhythms, the scent of new buildings, and the footsteps of strangers. But that day, as the sun dipped behind the buildings of his new school, Tora sensed something different.
In the distance, beneath the shade of a large tree standing firm beside a small path toward the dormitory, stood a figure he knew all too well. The evening shadows stretched the man's silhouette, and the gentle wind tousled his slightly longer hair—longer than the last time they had met.
Tora blinked slowly. His heart beat strangely.
"…Toshiro?"
He walked closer, his steps cautious. The figure slowly turned. Toshiro's eyes glistened, his face tired but relieved. Without a word, he pulled his younger brother into a tight embrace.
"Tora… are you okay?" he whispered hoarsely, as if holding back emotions that had been buried for too long. "I heard… you were detained by Jujutsu High…"
Tora stiffened in his brother's embrace, flustered. He wasn't used to warmth like this. His cheeks flushed with embarrassment.
"Eh—Toshiro, let go. I'm fine, really. That's enough!" he mumbled quickly, awkwardly trying to break free. "How was your journey? With Granny Ogami…?"
The hug slowly loosened. Toshiro looked down at the ground, then sighed deeply.
"…Ren is dead," he said softly.
Tora froze.
"We were attacked by a Grade 1 curse while relocating. But… I made it out alive. Granny Ogami too."
Toshiro then sat on an old wooden bench near the tree. The twilight cast long shadows on his face, emphasizing the lines of fatigue and unhealed wounds. Tora stared at him in silence.
'He… still cared about Granny Ogami,' Tora thought quietly.
"…Toshiro," Tora said slowly, "you know… Granny Ogami isn't our real grandmother, right?"
Tora's voice was calm, but it immediately thickened the air around them with tension.
Toshiro shot him a sharp look, his eyes burning with contained emotion.
"Tora… be careful what you say," he said firmly. "She raised us since we were kids. She was all we had back then."
Tora said nothing. He didn't respond.
After a few seconds, Toshiro glanced around, this time anxiously. His gaze was sharp, as if making sure no one was watching from the trees or rooftops. Then he stood, walked closer to Tora, and placed a hand on his younger brother's shoulder.
His face turned serious.
"Our hideout has been discovered by Jujutsu sorcerers," he whispered, his tone low but firm. "I came here only to deliver a message from Granny Ogami."
Tora stiffened. He could feel the strange energy in those words.
"Granny said…" Toshiro took a breath, "…you must stay here and investigate. Ask Gojo Satoru… where Toji Fushiguro's grave is. And find out… the location of the past battle between the users of the Ten Shadows and the Six Eyes. By any means necessary. Understood?"
Immediately, Toshiro glanced rapidly left and right again, like a wild animal aware it was being hunted.
"Don't forget, Tora…" he whispered with urgency. "I'll see you again. Ask Gojo everything. He knows something."
Without giving time for questions or answers, Toshiro turned and disappeared into the shadows of the trees. His steps were fast and light, as if time itself were chasing him.
Tora remained frozen under the tree, the evening wind brushing against his face—now full of questions.
---
The cloudy sky hung low above the ruins of the old temple, the former battlefield of two legends now remembered only by a select few. The wind carried the damp scent of earth and ash, whispering remnants of the tragedy that once unfolded there.
Tora stood still, his gaze empty, fixed on the ground beneath his feet. His brother Toshiro's image lingered vividly in his mind. That gaze—sharp, yet wounded—had surfaced the moment Tora had mentioned Toji Fushiguro's name. The question about Toji's grave and the legendary battle between the Six Eyes and Ten Shadows resurfaced once again. But all of it had already been mentioned—two months ago—by Gojo Satoru himself.
"I will never give away Toji's DNA… not as long as my brother is still around. Reviving Toji… would be the same as killing my own brother…"
Tora clenched his teeth. But his thoughts danced on the edge of logic and ambition. If Granny Ogami really could revive the spirits of the past… and if all the conditions for the ritual were met—
'Then maybe… I could make them my Shikigami…' Tora thought.
A faint smile formed on Tora's lips. A decision had been made.
But a cold, familiar voice shattered his thoughts.
"So… was that your brother?"
Tora flinched. His head turned slowly—and there stood a figure nearly untouchable, with a sly smile and eyes that could pierce through anyone's heart.
"Go… Gojo Satoru…"
There was nothing Tora could do but brace himself. This man was unpredictable. Always two steps ahead.
"Yes…" he whispered. "…Toshiro is my brother."
Gojo approached, his steps light as if burdened by nothing. Even the wind seemed to part for him.
"Just tell me the battle's location…" Gojo said casually, "…and Toji's corpse… do what you want. Hand it over or don't, I don't care."
He grinned, as if offering a new game.
"I just want to test my Domain Expansion. I've just awakened it."
Tora fell silent. His breath caught. It had only been six months since the battle. And Gojo… had already reached the pinnacle of Jujutsu technique: Domain Expansion.
The narrative of the technique echoed in his mind—a high-level barrier technique that turns the user's reality absolute, amplifying cursed techniques to an inescapable level… something not even most Grade 1 sorcerers could master.
"In just a few months… you already awakened a Domain Expansion?"
If he remembered correctly, even Yuji Itadori awakened his Domain Expansion within a month before fighting Sukuna…
But that was during wartime—this was a time of peace.
Gojo turned slowly. His smile remained, but his eyes… now glowed with the light that only true geniuses possessed.
And his answer came.
Gojo Satoru said:
"If you truly believe that time determines strength… then you don't know me at all, Tora…"
He rolled his eyes and grinned lazily.
"I don't learn to master. I remember to awaken. Talent… isn't a choice. It's a curse… one you can't escape."
He stepped closer—close enough that Tora could see his own reflection in Gojo's pale blue lenses.
Then Gojo added—his voice lower, deeper:
"That, Tora… is the most dangerous Domain Expansion of them all—Unlimited Void."
