Chapter 68: Taste of the Mortal World
"In that case, let me show you my skill, Junior Brother."
Zhen Yuanzi flicked his horsetail whisk and looked at the Mortal Dust Peach Tree, stepping lightly, a white cloud rose under his feet, and he headed towards the Mortal Dust Peach Tree.
The immortals looked on, only to see Zhen Yuanzi arrive at the side of the Mortal Dust Peach Tree, looking left and right, and finally selecting a peach he deemed fine.
He slowly reached out, touched the peach, then with a slight effort, he plucked it.
Afterward, Zhen Yuanzi held the Mortal Dust Peach and rode the cloud back to the edge of the clear pond, and said to Sun Wukong, "Picking the peach seemed no different from picking an ordinary peach."
"I've said it before, the Mortal Dust Peach can only be plucked by mortals or those who have an understanding of the mortal world," said Sun.
With a light chuckle, Sun Wukong said, "Brother Zhen Yuanzi is the ancestor of Earth Immortals, living in the mortal realm for many years. Although you spend most of your time on Longevity Mountain and at Wu Zhuang Guan, you often deal with mortal affairs and naturally understand the mortal dust."
"Only beings of the mortal world can pick the Mortal Dust Peach."
"For someone like you, Brother, who understands the mortal world, picking a peach is nothing but a simple task."
Hearing this, the other immortals also had their realizations.
"Then I will also give it a try," said an old immortal.
Taibaijinxing rose on a cloud and went towards the Mortal Dust Peach Tree, and indeed he plucked a Mortal Dust Peach as well.
This gave the other gods and immortals an illusion.
That was, picking a peach seemed very easy.
Instantly, other gods and immortals also rode clouds over, but some of them scattered the clouds beneath their feet when they got near, causing them to fall into the water.
Splash! Splash! Splash!
Quite a few gods and immortals turned into drenched chickens.
Yuyan hurriedly covered her mouth with her hand, secretly laughing, "I thought I was the only one who couldn't pick the peach. I didn't expect that even the immortals couldn't do it."
Among those who couldn't pick the peaches was Nezha as well.
Sun Wukong used his magic, fished the gods who fell into the water out, and dried the water on their bodies, saying, "Those who don't have an understanding of the mortal world can't pick the immortal peaches."
Those who had fallen into the water included constellations, planetary gods, some divine generals, and so on.
They were mostly diligent in their duties, and although they occasionally descended to the mortal world for trials, they mainly acted by protocol like dealing with formalities and didn't delve deeply into human affairs.
For them, the red dust was too remote.
As for Nezha?
Although he was old in age, he was still childlike in nature.
How could he pluck the fruit of the Mortal Dust without experiencing it?
What surprised Sun Wukong, however, was that Marshal Tianpeng managed to pick the Mortal Dust Peach.
Greedy, lustful...
While not entirely of the mortal world, Tian Peng was originally a mortal who, by chance, encountered an immortal, ate the Immortal Pill, and received the secret mantra. He achieved success in cultivation without much effort, but his nature, after becoming an immortal, reverted back to its original state.
To call him an immortal was less accurate than considering him a mortal with an immortal's body.
He had it too easy in becoming an immortal.
Ordinary people who become immortals usually go through numerous hardships and accumulate merit.
What about Marshal Tianpeng?
A lazy mortal happened upon a fortuitous immortal encounter, received teachings for cultivation, swallowed the Nine Revolving Reincarnation Elixir, went into seclusion for a while, and became an immortal.
In his case, it was all down to pure luck.
Because of his lazy nature as a mortal, he ascended quickly, leading to his character being inherently as lazy as that of a mortal, showing no improvement after becoming an immortal.
Sun Wukong felt that even his own self, who had banished his heart in the first simulation before finding Ancestral Master Subhuti, would have to spend two or three hundred years in aimless wandering on Huaguo Mountain, birthing a desire to escape the cycle of life and death, before setting sail, spending seven or eight years in Nanshan Continent, setting sail again, in order to have a resolute heart for seeking the Dao.
But Marshal Tianpeng...
Honestly, Sun Wukong felt that if he hadn't become an immortal yet, he might have envied the other's fortunes. Lying at home, people came knocking on his door, gifting him Immortal Laws and Immortal Pills, and he achieved success just by cultivating in seclusion.
But now, Sun Wukong felt there was no need to be envious.
Such immortals who have not gone through trials have a poor nature, cannot contain their inner desires, behave well ordinarily out of concern for decorum, but once they get drunk, they always do something foolish.
Among the gods from Heaven who came to the banquet, only Marshal Tianpeng picked the Mortal Dust Peach.
Because he was just a mortal who had become an immortal.
Zhen Yuanzi watched Marshal Tianpeng show off to the other heavenly generals, shook his head and chuckled, "Junior Brother, for us, being able to pick this Mortal Dust Peach should mean we can objectively see the mortal world and move through it freely."
"As for Tian Peng, he's probably still a person of the red dust."
"No wonder the Bodhisattva predicted that he would be demoted to the mortal realm in the future... With that character, it was only a matter of time."
Taibaijinxing also shook his head.
He was grateful to Marshal Tianpeng because it was he who had recommended him to be appointed as the Marshal of the Tianhe Naval Forces. Seeing his current behavior, however, it seemed he really needed to experience life in the mortal world.
Nezha was puzzled but understood that Marshal Tianpeng's cultivation was insufficient and that he would definitely make a mistake in the future, leading to his banishment to the mortal realm.
"Brother, let's not talk about Marshal Tianpeng, tell me, how does one eat this peach?" Zhen Yuanzi held the crystal-clear, big red peach in his hands, examining it curiously.
"It's actually quite simple, just eat it like a normal peach, but you mustn't use any other cutting tools, otherwise the aura of the Mortal Dust will dissipate, and it will turn into an ordinary flat peach," Sun Wukong explained. "If you wish to share it, simply break it open with your hands."
"How mysterious."
Zhen Yuanzi nodded and bit into the peach.
The flesh was fragrantly crisp, the aura of Mortal Dust blossomed on the tip of his tongue, wrapped in juice, and entered his stomach.
Instantly, Zhen Yuanzi felt as if he had entered the cycle of reincarnation, bawling as a newborn, learning to walk with a stumble, slowly growing up, taking a wife, and having children, surrounded by a happy family.
Born in the fields, died in the fields.
When he opened his eyes again, he felt as if his Primordial Spirit had been cleansed, and he sighed, "Brother, this fruit of yours truly makes one feel as if they have walked through the mortal world; it's extraordinary indeed!"
The experiences of living in the Mortal Dust either involve concealing Mana and moving through life, or simply a flicker of divine light, reincarnating, and experiencing life, old age, sickness, and death in the human world.
This fruit saves the Immortal the effort of having to split their divine light and reincarnate, preventing their temperament from being influenced by the returned divine light from the mortal experience, so there's no risk of any slight changes in character.
Truly a miraculous treasure!
Taibaijinxing, the Three Stars of Fortune, Prosperity, and Longevity, and The Bodhisattva Guanyin also took a bite of the Mortal Dust Peach upon hearing this, and all closed their eyes in deep thought.
Taibai sighed, "This peach is extraordinary."
The Three Stars praised, "Although it does not prolong life, its aura of Mortal Dust can cleanse the Primordial Spirit and enhance one's Daoist cultivation. Truly a remarkable fruit!"
The Bodhisattva Guanyin said, "It actually reminds this poor monk of the memories of my first life as a princess of a human country... This fruit is truly extraordinary, allowing one to introspect on life in the Mortal Dust without getting lost within it. Well done indeed!"
Seeing that Zhen Yuanzi and others had eaten it, Marshal Tianpeng took a bite as well, only to feel as though he had returned to his days as a mortal before waking up from a sleep.
"This fruit looks pretty, but it doesn't seem to taste as good as a flat peach."
Despite Marshal Tianpeng's quiet muttering, all the immortals present, who were keen of hearing, naturally heard his silly remark, and could not help but be speechless.
Zhen Yuanzi even scolded, "Such a waste to give this Mortal Dust Peach to that fellow."
Sun Wukong simply smiled and said, "Since it has been picked, it is meant to be; let him be."
Then, they saw Marshal Tianpeng devouring the Mortal Dust Peach clean in front of his fellow divine generals, smacking his lips and muttering to himself, "This peach is really magical, it actually has no pit."
Although Marshal Tianpeng could not appreciate the marvel of the Mortal Dust Peach, its aura indeed cleansed his Primordial Spirit.
Unfortunately, no matter how pure a Primordial Spirit is, if one's character is inherently lazy, they cannot enjoy the fruits of the Great Dao. Cаtсh thе fоrmаttеd vеrsiоn аt М|V|LЕМ_РYR.
Just like Sun Wukong had seen on his first simulation with Zhu Bajie, who was demoted to the mortal realm, born into a pig's body, and became even lazier. During his journey to the West, he was often negligent, and thus could only achieve the position of Cleansing Altar Envoy at the end.
However, that role of Cleansing Altar Envoy actually suited Zhu Bajie's gluttonous nature perfectly, a case of matching one's strengths.
This time, having eaten the Mortal Dust Peach, Marshal Tianpeng's Primordial Spirit was thoroughly cleansed by the aura, and should he be demoted to the mortal realm in the future, he would likely maintain his clarity and not reincarnate into a pig again.
Zhen Yuanzi, Taibaijinxing, and others finished their Mortal Dust Peaches and thanked Sun Wukong.
The grand feast at Huaguo Mountain thus came to an end.
But the immortals didn't leave right away; instead, they prepared to tour Huaguo Mountain thoroughly, having only glanced at its wonders before. This time, they wanted to truly appreciate the landscape of Huaguo Mountain.
For this, Sun Wukong had Ao Yun prepare Heavenly Dao and Eternal coins, to be given to the immortals and gods, making it convenient for them to purchase anything they fancied in Huaguo Mountain City.
The immortals thanked him.
Taibaijinxing and Nezha said their goodbyes to Sun Wukong, ready to return to the heavens.
"Nezha, Taibai, have I been a poor host that you're leaving so soon?" Sun Wukong asked.
"Spirit King, do not take offense."
Taibaijinxing said with a smile, "Nezha and I both have urgent matters to attend to and must return quickly."
Nezha added, "Taibaijinxing is right; we're quite busy, unlike Marshal Tianpeng and the others, who have so much leisure time."
Sun Wukong also learned a bit about the Tianhe Naval Forces from Nezha.
There are as many as a hundred and eighty Marshals alone. In the past few days (by celestial reckoning), it wasn't Marshal Tianpeng and the few others' turn for duty, which is why they were able to descend to the mortal realm and attend the banquet he hosted.
"Then take care, both of you, and visit often when you have the time."
Sun Wukong didn't insist on keeping them and simply waved goodbye.
After Nezha and Taibaijinxing had left, Zhen Yuanzi pulled Sun Wukong back to Shuilian Cave, pointed to the Mortal Dust Peach Tree, and asked, "Brother, I counted, and there are still three thousand peaches. Could it be that as one is plucked, another grows?"
"Yes," Sun Wukong said. "Three thousand troubles of the Mortal Dust! As long as the mortal world's troubles do not cease, this tree will always bear three thousand fruits, regardless of spring, summer, fall, or winter."
"Could you spare me a few?" asked Zhen Yuanzi.
"Of course," Sun Wukong readily agreed.
"Thank you."
Overjoyed, Zhen Yuanzi picked three peaches and tucked them into his sleeve.
