Chapter 62 The Assembly of Immortals at the Banquet
"Now, you have two choices,"
the Demon King, who could live for ten thousand years, looked at the dense crowd of outlaw monsters on the open ground and waved his hand, prompting his three teachers to push out ten large boxes of dark blue and black garments.
"First, you can go and work in the mines."
"Second, stay here and serve the Three Lives Scholarly City, doing various chores like sweeping the floor, washing dishes, making fire, cleaning the toilets, and so on."
It was obvious that most of the monsters chose to don the blue and black clothes and stayed in the Three Lives Scholarly City.
For those monsters in Ao Lai who had heard about the mining through rumors, going to the mines was as good as a death sentence, so it was better to stay here.
After all, the great reputation of the Three Lives Scholarly City was also known in Ao Lai.
If they could learn even a little, it would be of infinite use in the future. Why bother with mining work?
"Very good."
After sending a small number of monsters who disagreed to be menials to the mines, the Demon King, who could live for ten thousand years, nodded his head in satisfaction at the various remaining monsters, and then personally taught them the new Transformation Skill so that they could cultivate a true human form in the future.
Thereafter, these lesser monsters were taken down to learn the most basic skills for doing work...
...
"Elder brother, there are only seven days left until June, when the celestials from heaven and the scattered immortals from the seas will arrive as scheduled,"
Ao Yun said with contentment, "The arrangements for various cities in Huaguo Mountain have been completed, and almost all the outlaw monsters in Ao Lai have been captured. Now they are either mining or building roads."
"However, Three Lives Academy has recently hired a lot of monsters as menials... Just seven days – I fear it's too short a time for cultivation, and they might end up offending the True Immortals visiting the academy."
Concerning this, Sun Wukong knew it was the Demon King, who could live for ten thousand years, wanting to put on a show in front of the immortals to prove the educational capabilities of the Three Lives Scholarly City.
He then said, "Let the Demon King, who could live for ten thousand years, handle it. Perhaps he will give us a surprise." Enjoying the story? Find more at MV-LEMPYR.
Ao Yun expressed his concern, "But seven days seems far too short."
Sun Wukong responded, "If only the good side of my Huaguo Mountain is shown to the celestials, it would seem rather deliberate. Besides, the world itself is not perfect; this is not something that can be achieved by human effort alone."
"What elder brother says is true."
Ao Yun then stopped discussing this matter and brought up another, "The news that our Huaguo Mountain is going to hold a Huaguo Meeting might probably also reach the Northern Jambu Continent."
In the Northern Jambu Continent, there are four Demon Kings.
They once visited Sun Wukong along with the Peng Demon King.
Now that the Peng Demon King has become a son-in-law and been drained by the seductress, there's no need to say more; but if the Lion Camel King, Peng Demon King, Yurong King, and Mi Hou King come uninvited, that could be troubling.
Although Sun Wukong has no particular friendship with them, if these four Demon Kings, full of turbid qi, were to arrive during the Huaguo Meeting, it could spoil Sun Wukong's relationships with the other celestials.
True Immortals with virtue have no good feelings towards ignorant Demon Kings from the earthly realm who do not know the celestial calendar or manners.
If they found out that Sun Wukong had been in touch with these Demon Kings, they would probably not associate with him in the future.
"Rest assured, they're busy now and don't have time to come over,"
Sun Wukong's golden eyes flickered as he looked towards the direction of the Northern Jambu Continent.
There, the four Demon Kings have had a clash with True Martial, and they will stay there defending their enterprises for several years to come, not visiting his Huaguo Mountain.
This was also the reason why these four Demon Kings did not come to this Huaguo Meeting in his two previous simulations.
Because, in truth, they simply couldn't make it.
"If elder brother says so, then surely they will not come, but should we relocate the Peng Demon King?"
The Peng Demon King had been in a state of being drained, located in unexplored deep mountains and old forests, but if celestials from every direction were to come, it was inevitable that some would wander about. If they discovered the Peng Demon King...
Although it would not necessarily lead to acts of Subduing Demons and Eliminating Evil, they would likely start seeing Sun Wukong in a "different light."
Ao Yun did not wish for that to happen at all!
In front of the celestials, his elder brother had to be seen as dignified and majestic; how could he reveal even a hint of indecision?
Sun Wukong smiled and said, "The Peng Demon King has brought the suffering upon himself. But indeed, those enchanting sounds can lead to wild thoughts. I'll simply set up a soundproof Formation when the time comes."
Ao Yun nodded, "That would do."
In the blink of an eye, seven days hurriedly passed.
Outside Huaguo Mountain, in the distant horizon, immortals rode the clouds, exuding an air of immortality; Bodhisattvas sat upon lotus platforms, their faces beaming with compassion.
Merchants on the sea saw them and all bowed down in worship.
The Immortals and Buddhas looked down, either fanning celestial breeze to dispel their weariness or sprinkling celestial dew to cleanse their hidden ailments.
If the mortals had been praying in temples, the divine beings would generally not pay too much attention.
After all, they hear billions of prayers every day; how could they attend to each one?
But now, being seen by mortals in person and receiving their prostrations, the virtuous True Immortals naturally had to respond and honor the reason for their worship.
"Immortal!"
"Bodhisattva!"
The merchants from Ao Lai were immensely grateful.
With a waft of celestial wind and a sprinkling of celestial dew, the fatigue of their bodies dissipated into thin air, and their spirits were revived a hundredfold.
"Huaguo Mountain actually has so many immortals arriving!"
"It seems that the previous rumors are true, the Monkey King of Huaguo Mountain is holding a banquet for all the immortals!"
"Look! Is that the Monkey King of Huaguo Mountain?"
Someone sharp-eyed leaned against the railing, pointing to the port not far away—
At the port of Huaguo Mountain, immortals continued to arrive one after another, and Sun Wukong personally came out to greet them. It wasn't until Zhen Yuanzi and The Bodhisattva Guanyin arrived that Sun Wukong led all the celestial gods on clouds, flying low to the inner parts of Huaguo Mountain.
Upon arriving before the towering gates of the great wall, Zhen Yuanzi exclaimed, "Junior Brother, your Huaguo Mountain can be compared to a mortal dynasty. The grandeur of this great wall is comparable to the four great heavenly gates of the celestial realm, though it's not quite as magnificent."
Sun Wukong modestly replied, "These are but mundane things; how can they compare to the wonders of the celestial realm? Come, I will take you all to tour the seventy-two cities of Huaguo Mountain, the Three Lives Academy, and finally the sacred city where the Huaguo Meeting will be held, Shuilian Cave Heaven."
"Very well said!" Taibaijinxing stroked his beard, "The host leads the way, and the guests will follow. Please go ahead, Spirit King."
"Please, everyone."
Sun Wukong laughed heartily and led Zhen Yuanzi, Taibaijinxing, Nezha, The Bodhisattva Guanyin, the Three Stars of Fortune, Longevity, and Prosperity, fifteen of the Twenty-Eight Mansions' stars, seven of the Nine Luminaries, eleven of the Twelve Celestials, various idle marshals and gods from the heavenly court, and others into the great wall, reaching the top.
Looking out, seventy-four cities were mostly visible all at once.
Between them, there were connecting highways bustling with traffic, an endless stream of activity that left all the immortals in awe.
Taibaijinxing, looking at the extensive highways, asked, "Spirit King, there are seventy-four cities within this great wall. Shall we travel by cloud, or is there another arrangement?"
Sun Wukong said, "As the saying goes: The road lies beneath one's feet. We are all true immortals, accustomed to riding clouds and mists, but it's good to walk on the ground sometimes. Why not walk there, what do you think?"
The Bodhisattva Guanyin voiced her approval with a "Good indeed," her compassionate face revealing a trace of joy, "We immortals and Buddhas are also born between heaven and earth. Walking on the ground is in accordance with the laws of nature. Your Highness the Spirit King is indeed wise!"
With the Bodhisattva's praise, naturally, no other celestial being had any objections.
The immortals followed Sun Wukong down the great wall to the highway.
With one step, Sun Wukong covered a distance of a hundred meters.
Taibaijinxing laughed, "So, this is what the Spirit King meant by walking."
To contract the earth to an inch, one step could span a thousand miles.
Clearly, Sun Wukong slowed down his pace.
Among the crowd, only The Bodhisattva Guanyin employed the earth-contracting skill. The other immortals, who were not adept at this art, mostly traveled by flying low on clouds or let their mounts do the work.
After all, if they were to truly walk like ordinary people, who knows how long it would take? Surely they couldn't run with the speed of the wind, could they?
Though running would indeed be fast, the sight would be somewhat unseemly.
Before long, the immortals arrived at the first city—Elephant City.
Its lord was the Elephant Demon King.
The Elephant King had planned to greet them personally, but Sun Wukong had instructed that there was no need for such formalities. The people of the city should carry on with their lives as usual, and the so-called arrangements were merely to sweep the streets more diligently each day.
Nevertheless, the elephant demons in the city were still excited and warmly welcomed Sun Wukong and the others, leading them to tour the architecture of Elephant City, taste its delicacies, and experience its scenery.
The immortals were endlessly curious.
The houses of the city were mostly built of stone, tall and sturdy, like impregnable fortresses.
Yet on these walls, all kinds of flowers and plants were cultivated—reds and purples that complemented each other, adding a warm touch to this city of stone.
Even the wayside rocks visitors came across were covered in lush green moss, fresh and adorable.
Furthermore, the immortals could tell that the plant life in the city was not recently planted; there were signs of the passage of years, and it must have been planned this way from the beginning.
The spirits of the city were mostly elephant demons, with large statures, but apart from their elephant ears, trunks, and tusks on their heads, most had completely transformed into human forms.
The elephant ears, tusks, and trunks were intentionally kept.
Zhen Yuanzi asked, "Junior Brother, these spirit elephants could fully transform into human form, so why do they still retain the characteristics of their original forms?"
Sun Wukong replied with a smile, "Although they can transform into humans, they keep these features to maintain their racial identity. They learn human customs and languages but do not completely imitate them. They need to add their own traits, adapting according to place and time. That is the proper way."
Zhen Yuanzi laughed heartily, "What you say is true, Junior Brother. This is in harmony with the ways of the Heavenly Dao and the principle of nature."
"Huh?"
Taibaijinxing, seeing a spirit elephant riding on an untransformed huge elephant and pulling a cart, had a strange expression, "Why is this spirit elephant making use of its own kind?"
Elephant driving elephant?
Bizarre!
The immortals also noticed this and looked towards Sun Wukong, hoping he would explain.
Sun Wukong explained, "When I first taught the myriad demons of Huaguo Mountain, many of them were fond of eating flesh and blood. Some did it out of desire, others due to natural instinct. Therefore, I set a rule: they may eat meat, but they must not consume enlightened beings."
The immortals nodded.
The natural order of the strong preying on the weak is the way of the world.
But if those with intelligence still consume other intelligent beings, then they are just satisfying their own cravings and have strayed into the demonic path.
"For the mountain spirits and wild monsters, their races differ, and there are natural conflicts among them. I thus distinguished two categories based on their spiritual sense," continued Sun Wukong.
"May I ask which two categories?"
