Chapter 91: Chapter 91: Ho-Oh
"Is this your magic?"
"Mm."
Shichen nodded, frankly saying, "This is magic different from what's in this world, called 'Space Control Arts.'"
"Space Control Arts…" Flamme muttered to herself. Just from the name she could understand what sort of magic it was.
"So it's different from the magic of this world, no wonder."
"Master, would you like to learn it? I can teach you," Shichen asked.
"I'm indeed quite interested." Flamme did not decline, smiling and nodding.
"In that case, let's not delay—"
"No hurry." Flamme interrupted him. "I'd like to see that flame power of yours first."
"That?" Shichen hesitated. "Master might not be able to withstand it."
"What do you mean?"
"My flame can burn through your magical shield."
"That powerful? Then I want to see it even more." Flamme became even more interested upon hearing that.
"Huh?" Shichen froze for a second.
"Huh what? You said you can control that flame, correct?" Flamme asked.
"Yes, I can."
"Then there's no problem, right? Unless you plan to burn me?"
"True… In that case, Master, be ready."
"Go ahead."
Around Flamme's body, a bluish-white translucent barrier in a hemispherical shape formed around her, faintly shining. This was her barrier magic.
Seeing that, Shichen softly raised a hand, and within his palm gathered a cluster of golden flame. Without hesitation, he flicked the flame lightly toward Flamme.
The flame shot out as if it had a will of its own, suddenly speeding up mid-air and slamming into Flamme's barrier in an instant.
Boom!
In that split second, the flame seemed re-ignited, instantly enveloping the entire barrier. The protective shield turned into a dome of fire, and without any visible shattering or prior sign, Flamme's barrier vanished entirely. All that remained was a golden blaze surrounding her in a half-sphere, burning away.
She discovered she couldn't put up another barrier. However, Flamme didn't feel any heat from the flames; Shichen was controlling them so they wouldn't harm her.
Flamme gazed up at the golden flames encircling her. Those flames were full of a holy aura, imbued with life energy, stirring an urge to reach out and touch them—but she knew if she did, they might burn her to ash.
"Alright, take it back," Flamme said to Shichen.
"Understood."
Shichen raised his palm toward the fire. Obediently, the flame converged, flowing into his palm and gradually vanishing.
"Amazing. This flame you've subdued?" Flamme walked up to him, curiously peering at his palm.
Clearly, that flame had nothing to do with typical magic, more like a unique, personal ability—one might even call it a fire spirit.
"Not exactly subdued—more like I'm borrowing it," Shichen shook his head.
"Borrowing it?" Flamme regarded him in puzzlement.
"Then let me show you, Master." Shichen smiled, then beckoned to Frieren.
"Frieren, come here, too."
"What for?" Frieren walked over slowly.
"To let you see something cool." Shichen habitually ruffled her hair again.
"What does seeing something cool have to do with patting my head?"
"A senpai patting his kouhai's head, isn't that normal? It shows our close bond."
Frieren looked calm and expressionless. "...I almost believed you."
"Haha~ Don't worry about it." Shichen patted her head two more times.
"You two get along so well, huh? It's been nearly a hundred days since you've met, right?" Flamme gazed at them, smiling contentedly.
"Not at all. It's just that Shichen here has no sense of personal boundaries," Frieren replied flatly.
"That hurts my feelings. I took such good care of you, and you forgot?"
"Ninety-one days and I already forgot."
"Hehe~" Flamme chuckled. "Elves don't usually have a firm concept of time. It's impressive you kept track so precisely. I myself have already lost count."
Frieren: "..."
"Exactly. Clearly you've been thinking about me the whole time, just too proud to admit it," Shichen teased with a bright grin, eyeing Frieren.
Frieren turned away, impatiently urging him, "Will you show us that 'cool thing' or not?"
"Alright, alright."
Shichen laughed, withdrew his hand, and stepped forward, raising his hand to the sky.
His eyes turned scarlet, a golden flame symbol appeared on his brow, and golden fire cloaked his arm.
An astonishing burst of mana surged from his body, blazing heat waves radiating outward from him. Yet strangely, neither Frieren nor Flamme was harmed, though the wind blew their hair about.
Frieren simply watched quietly, while Flamme showed open delight.
From this mana alone, from this aura… Shichen definitely could defeat the Demon King, eradicate the demon race!
"Soar to the skies—Ho-Oh!"
Accompanied by Shichen's call, a vast flow of mana rushed out from him and shot high into the sky. In the sky, a rainbow materialized, and beneath it, a huge, colorful avian beast appeared, spreading its wings to fly.
"Caw—!"
The giant rainbow bird raised its head in a long cry. Wherever it flew, golden sparkles fell behind it.
Flamme stared in shock at the enormous bird overhead. Even from this distance, she could sense its oppressive aura, on par with her own master's.
That wasn't mere illusion—clearly, Shichen really could annihilate the Demon King, wipe out the demon race!
"What is that?" Frieren looked at the colossal, colorful avian creature for a while, then asked Shichen.
"It's called Ho-Oh, a legendary phoenix."
"A legend? A phoenix?"
"No worries if you don't fully grasp it. Just know I've subdued it."
"Oh."
Shichen gazed up at Ho-Oh circling in the sky, grinning in high spirits and beaming with pride. Aside from his earlier time with Tohru in the clouds, awakening it, this was the first time he'd properly summoned it in front of others.
It resembled a cross between a phoenix and a peacock: golden-red plumage, a yellow tail, a white abdomen, green-tipped wings, a green stripe around its neck, a yellow beak, red eyes with black rings, plus a crown-like crest.
All in all, it was multicolored—indeed, it was Ho-Oh!
Originally Shichen never imagined his divine beast from the embedded "Divine Fragment" would be a legendary Pokémon. No wonder the Fourth Primogenitor's beasts were no match. Compared to Ho-Oh, the vampire's beasts just didn't measure up.
"So it's called Ho-Oh?" Flamme asked, still gazing at it.
"Yes. My flame ability is exactly Ho-Oh's."
"I see… so it's formed from mana? And you subdued it?"
"Yes. As expected of Master, you can easily see its true nature."
"How does it live inside your body?" Flamme continued asking.
"In mana form, residing in my bloodstream."
"Inside your blood? So that's your power, truly astonishing." Flamme looked at Shichen's fiery scarlet eyes, sighing in amazement.
"Master, do you want to know more?" Shichen winked.
"No, I was just thinking it's… truly beautiful." Flamme again admired Ho-Oh in the sky.
"You like pretty things, Master? No wonder you enjoy making flower fields with your magic," Shichen joked.
"Why not? I am a woman, after all."
"Of course, nothing's wrong with that. Magic isn't just for battle."
"You brat." Flamme laughed and reached out to ruffle his hair, treating him like a child—but rather forcefully.
"Master's messing with me now, huh?"
"Who told you to get so cocky when you gain power?" Flamme scolded him playfully, knocking on his head.
"Alright, Master, can we skip this? Let's go back to teaching you Space Control Arts, yes?" Shichen quickly stepped behind Frieren as if hiding.
"Sure," Flamme said with a wry smile.
