Chapter 36: Is this all you are capable of?
Jace stepped into the arena, his eyes widening at the scene before him. The floating ruins trembled beneath his feet, their jagged edges biting into the storm-ridden sky. Far below, dark clouds churned with violent energy, swirling ominously as if reacting to the magic in the air. At the center of the arena, a broken obelisk hummed with unstable power, its cracks flickering with raw, untamed magic. Wind howled through the shattered bridges, and sparks of elemental discharge danced across the stone platforms, each one shifting and shaking with unpredictable force.
"The first combatant to achieve three points will be the victor," the announcer's voice echoed across the arena, his tone amplified by the swirling chaos. The loud horn sounded, signaling the beginning of the duel.
Giorgi stood at the far end, a mocking smile playing at the corners of his lips. "I hope you're ready to lose," he sneered, summoning a powerful gust of wind that hurled debris toward Jace with deadly speed.
Jace didn't flinch. With a swift motion, he conjured a swirling ring of water, catching the flying debris and redirecting it back toward Giorgi with a focused blast.
Giorgi smirked. As the water shot toward him, he quickly formed a vortex of wind around himself, pulling the water into the maelstrom before sending it hurtling back at Jace. "Is that all you can do?" he taunted, eyes glinting with confidence.
Jace narrowed his eyes, watching the water's trajectory. As the wave of liquid neared him, he froze it instantly, the mass of ice crashing to the ground with a loud, echoing thud. Dust billowed into the air, creating a thick veil of cover. Seizing the moment, Jace summoned two sharp ice bolts, launching them toward Giorgi while secretly trailing a thin path of water beneath his feet. The stream snaked its way along the underside of the island, creeping toward Giorgi's blind side.
Giorgi's quick reflexes kicked in. Using the wind currents around him and his own wind magic, he launched himself high into the air, dodging the incoming ice bolts. However, in doing so, he also unintentionally avoided the water attack, which splashed harmlessly below him.
With a confident grin, Giorgi unleashed a flash of light, aiming to blind Jace and disrupt his attack. The sudden brilliance filled the arena, making it difficult for Jace to see clearly.
"Pathetic," Jace scoffed. Without hesitation, he summoned a barrier of earth around his eyes, crafting makeshift goggles with tiny slits to protect himself from the light's intensity. Simultaneously, he used his water magic to reflect the blinding light back at Giorgi, a mirror of his own attack.
While Giorgi was temporarily disoriented, Jace fired another ice bolt, striking the wind mage squarely in the chest. The impact caused Giorgi to falter mid air, his hovering disrupted for a brief, critical moment.
Ding, The scoreboard flashed, the sound echoing through the arena as the score updated to 1-0 in Jace's favor.
"How dare you actually strike me!" Giorgi roared, his fury boiling over. With a violent motion, he summoned a powerful gust of wind, aiming to knock Jace off his feet. At the same time, he extended his hands, causing tendrils of acid to rise from the cracks in the stone beneath them. The caustic energy sizzled and cracked the ground as it pooled, advancing toward the spot where Jace stood.
Jace stood his ground, unflinching. He conjured a stone throne, mimicking Lord Severian's use of wood magic in their previous sparring session. Settling into the throne with an air of confidence, he allowed the gust of wind to swirl around him, undisturbed. The throne was immovable, and the wind couldn't shake him from his position. As the acid advanced, Jace supercooled the ground beneath him, freezing the corrosive substance instantly. The acid hardened into jagged ice, no longer a threat.
Giorgi's face turned crimson with rage. He couldn't believe that Jace was treating him as if he were no more than an inconvenience. His eyes flicked toward the ground, and with a wave of his hand, large roots and thick branches sprouted from the cracked stone. They twisted and curled, seeking to wrap around Jace's throne and crush him, the wood's strength fueled by Giorgi's intense fury.
As the roots coiled around him, Jace casually rested his chin on his hand, an air of indifference settling over him. "Is this all you're capable of?" he asked, his voice dripping with boredom.
With a snap of his fingers, a blazing inferno erupted around him. The fire roared to life, swirling with violent energy, and the roots shriveled away, consumed by the flames until nothing remained but drifting ash.
The sight of his spell reduced to nothing but smoke and cinders pushed Giorgi to the edge. His face twisted in rage as he roared, "You won't make a mockery of me!" With a violent motion, he summoned a powerful gust of wind, his anger channeling into the air. The wind whipped violently around Jace, stirring up a violent whirlwind of debris and dust. Jagged shards of stone, broken wood, and shards of broken magic itself spun through the air, tearing through the arena as Giorgi attempted to overwhelm Jace with sheer force.
