Chapter 116: Together
“We’re here~!”
“Yep.”
The three of them passed through the pedestrian street and arrived at a newly built, massive shopping mall.
The architecture was futuristic, a cutting-edge design for this era.
The mall was divided into east and west wings, with six floors above ground and three underground, housing over 200 stores. It offered a wide range of products, so you could find almost anything you wanted. There were also numerous restaurants and entertainment venues.
It was the perfect place for couples and families to spend an entire day without getting bored.
Since it wasn’t far from the university, weekends often saw plenty of college couples wandering about.
In short, it was a haven designed for people with active social lives.
Shi Hai, however, had no connection to such a lifestyle. Still, he wasn’t entirely unfamiliar with the place.
He’d been here before—not with friends, but with his mom to watch a movie. At the time, someone mistook them for siblings, which had Liu Zhenshan gloating for quite a while.
Once inside the mall, Zhu Lingjie suggested, “Why don’t we watch a movie first?”
“Sure! I checked beforehand, and Spider-Man is showing!”
“Spider-Man, huh… So it’s releasing this year.”
“Yeah, I thought it would’ve been earlier. Avengers was released this May, but it’s already out of theaters.”
Meanwhile, Shi Hai’s thoughts were elsewhere. He wasn’t picky about which movie to watch, but could they let go of his hands first?
Earlier, on the pedestrian street, Shi Hai had deliberately suggested buying some snacks, thinking it would require freeing up their hands to pay or hold the food.
They agreed nonchalantly but bought only one snack. Jian Sichun paid, Zhu Lingjie held it, and neither let go of his hands during the entire process.
Their reasoning? They said they’d had a filling lunch and only wanted a small bite, leaving the rest for Shi Hai to finish.
So, one fed him while the other wiped his mouth, completely unbothered by the attention they attracted. Many passersby looked on enviously.
Shi Hai, however, felt far from happy. He was sweating nervously, both from his forehead and his palms.
These two… they were clearly prepared for this.
The whole “rental boyfriend” excuse and the subsequent hand-holding idea were likely pre-planned.
That explained their seamless coordination. But what was their purpose in doing all this?
This hand-holding wasn’t romantic—it was nerve-wracking.
It felt more like they’d slapped handcuffs on him to prevent his escape.
But was that even necessary?
What sort of shocking thing were they planning that required making sure he couldn’t run away?
Before Shi Hai could figure it out, the two girls dragged him upstairs.
The cinema was on the fifth floor of the west wing. As they ascended, they noticed several couples lining up—many had chosen this prime Sunday afternoon slot for their dates.
Among the couples, the trio of Shi Hai, Jian Sichun, and Zhu Lingjie stood out like a sore thumb. Their hand-holding dynamic was even more eye-catching than being alone.
Zhu Lingjie’s face was already flushed red. With her mild social anxiety, just being in such a crowded place was challenging. Doing something this attention-grabbing made her want to curl up in embarrassment.
While Zhu Lingjie had prior experience showing affection publicly with Shi Hai, regular couples didn’t attract this kind of widespread attention.
But for today’s plan, she mustered all her courage and pretended to stay calm.
Jian Sichun, on the other hand, was brimming with confidence—she was the mastermind behind the plan, after all.
She led Shi Hai to the movie ticket counter, where they queued up. When it was their turn, Jian Sichun asked the ticket clerk,
“Excuse me, are there any couple seats available?”
The clerk looked at the three of them and froze for a moment. Perhaps being a bit too straightforward, the clerk blurted out,
“Um… which two of you are the couple?”
After saying it, the clerk realized the question might not have been appropriate. But the words were already out, so they could only wait to see how the trio would respond.
Meanwhile, the surrounding onlookers thought, Good question! They were also curious about the relationship between Shi Hai and the two girls.
Even Shi Hai himself was desperate to understand what was happening.
At this moment, the two girls exchanged glances. Jian Sichun gave Zhu Lingjie an encouraging look.
Taking a deep breath, Zhu Lingjie finally spoke, her voice trembling.
“We… the three of us are a couple.”
“…Uh…”
The ticket clerk froze, the people in line behind them were dumbfounded, and Shi Hai wanted to facepalm—but his hands were unavailable.
Everyone had anticipated some kind of love-triangle drama, but no one expected this bizarre twist.
What was even more shocking was the ticket clerk’s dazed response.
“Um… Miss, we don’t have couple seats for three people…”
At this point, Jian Sichun chimed in confidently.
“I know, so we’ll buy four tickets—two pairs of couple seats.”
“O-okay…”
The clerk was so flustered she stammered, clearly unprepared for this kind of situation.
After getting the tickets, Jian Sichun slipped them into Shi Hai’s pocket. Amid the murmurs and curious stares of onlookers, they went on to buy drinks and popcorn.
This time, they only bought one large drink and a small bucket of popcorn. The reasoning was the same as before—probably another round of the “feeding operation.”
But popcorn was one thing. What about the drink?
There was only one straw… Were they going to indirectly kiss?
Shi Hai’s mind flashed back to his conversation with Senior Tian Shui yesterday when he brought up indirect kissing. She’d laughed at him.
Perhaps for emotionally mature women like them, something like this wasn’t even worth overthinking.
Shi Hai figured he should probably lighten up, too.
After all, the main purpose of today was to make them happy. If they thought this was fun, there was no need for him to overanalyze.
The moment Shi Hai decided to relax, the two girls caught the subtle change in his expression. They exchanged a quick glance and smiled knowingly.
They realized Shi Hai was starting to “adapt.”
No matter how absurd the situation, as long as Shi Hai convinced himself it was “understandable,” he could accept it.
This was one of Shi Hai’s strengths, and also a trait they could leverage.
Gradually, they would steer his thoughts from logical to illogical and get him to accept their “proposals.”
Inside the theater, they headed to the last row. Most of the seats up front were full, but plenty of couple seats in the back were still vacant.
Couple seats weren’t usually in high demand; after all, people came to watch movies, not do other things.
Those who wanted to indulge in something more thrilling wouldn’t choose a popular film during a prime afternoon slot. They’d go for a late-night screening of a niche film instead—fewer people meant less risk.
When they reached their seats, Shi Hai asked, “So, how are we sitting?”
Feigning innocence, Jian Sichun replied, “Well, couple seats are pretty spacious. A third person could probably fit, though it might be a little tight… haha…”
Shi Hai frowned, retorting instantly, “Wait… are we seriously going to sit all three of us together?”
As soon as he said this, heads turned their way again.
Three people together…?
Was this really happening?
Even the surrounding couples started whispering among themselves, utterly bewildered.
Was this some next-level arrangement?
