Chapter 18: Chapter 18: The Sparring Session
The next day, the gym was alive with anticipation. Ippo and Alex had spent the morning running through the quiet streets, pushing their limits to build stamina for their pro debuts. Sweat dripped from their brows as they returned to the gym, their determination unwavering.
After a quick water break, Coach Kamogawa gathered everyone. "Alright, today's focus is sparring. Kimura, you'll mimic Oda Yuusuke's style for Ippo. Aoki, you'll take on Arata Kangatar's for Alex. You two," he gestured to Ippo and Alex, "need to learn how to deal with their tactics. Follow the plan!"
First Round: Kimura vs. IppoKimura adjusted his gloves and smirked. "Alright, Makunouchi, let's see what you've got. I'll be Oda for today, so don't hold back."
Ippo nodded, clenching his fists. "Right!"
The two stepped into the ring, and the bell rang. Kimura immediately took a southpaw stance, throwing out sharp jabs to keep Ippo at bay, just as Oda did in the videos.
Ippo tried to close the distance, but Kimura's jab was precise, snapping at his guard. "You're not getting in that easily, kid!" Kimura taunted, adding in a quick one-two combination.
Ippo weaved under the punches, his footwork improving with each step. He edged closer, but Kimura pivoted away, maintaining the gap. Ippo gritted his teeth.
"Don't forget the game plan, Ippo!" Kamogawa shouted.
Ippo took a deep breath and adjusted his rhythm. This time, he baited Kimura with feints, forcing him to jab prematurely. The moment Kimura extended his arm, Ippo slipped inside and unleashed a powerful left hook to the body.
"Argh!" Kimura grunted, stumbling back.
Ippo pressed the advantage, weaving under another jab and following up with a devastating right uppercut that lifted Kimura slightly off the ground.
"Time!" Yagi called, ending the round.
Kimura leaned against the ropes, panting. "Damn, kid... That power is no joke."
Ippo smiled sheepishly, scratching the back of his head. "Thank you, Kimura-san. I'll keep working on closing the gap better."
Second Round: Aoki vs. AlexAs Ippo stepped out, Alex climbed into the ring, his confidence radiating. Aoki, already in character,
mimicked Arata's stance—a high guard with a slight forward lean.
"Ready to face Arata's shadow, Alex?" Aoki teased, rolling his shoulders.
Alex smirked. "Bring it on. Just don't cry when you lose."
The bell rang, and Aoki came out swinging, throwing heavy hooks to the body. Alex danced on the balls of his feet, keeping his distance with crisp jabs.
"Good! Keep that jab working!" Kamogawa shouted.
Alex's jab snapped out repeatedly, stinging Aoki's guard and disrupting his rhythm. Aoki lunged forward with a wide overhand right, but Alex stepped back and countered with a lightning-fast straight to the nose.
"Ugh!" Aoki staggered, shaking his head. "You punk, that hurt!"
Alex grinned. "That's just the appetizer."
Aoki rushed in again, feinting a hook to the body before aiming high. Alex saw through it, ducking low and pivoting to the side. From there, he unleashed a sharp three-piece combo: jab, cross, and a lead hook to the ribs.
Aoki grunted but managed to retaliate with a glancing uppercut. Alex absorbed it, quickly resetting his stance and reestablishing his jab to keep Aoki at bay.
"Time!" Yagi called again.
Aoki collapsed onto the nearest stool, rubbing his ribs. "Man, you fight like a machine."
Alex chuckled, offering a hand to help him up. "Hey, you gave me a good workout. Thanks for the practice."
Post-Sparring ReflectionAfter the session, Ippo and Alex sat on the ring apron, wiping sweat from their faces.
"You're getting better at closing gaps, Ippo," Alex said, patting his Cousin on the back.
"And you're so quick with your counters," Ippo replied, his admiration genuine. "It's amazing."
Takamura walked by, throwing a towel over his shoulder. "Don't get cocky, you two. Sparring's just the warm-up. You'll need to bring more than that if you want to win your debuts."
Kimura, still nursing his sore ribs, nodded. "Yeah, listen to Takamura. Your opponents aren't gonna pull their punches like we do."
Alex grinned. "Don't worry. I've got plenty more tricks up my sleeve."
Ippo nodded firmly, his resolve stronger than ever. "Me too. We'll be ready."
