Chapter 19: The Calm Before The Storm.
Star City, a prominent city of towering skyscrapers, full of movement, where people's only concern is working and earning a salary. The city seemed as usual, yet this time, there was a difference.
"Did you hear? They still haven't caught the person who attacked the shopping mall."
"So that lunatic is still loose?" another voice responded.
"What on earth is Trio Encanto doing?"
The city was in turmoil due to the attack at the mall. A masked girl named Lara had taken hostages to intimidate the group of sorceresses, Trio Encanto. Nothing like that had ever happened... at least not as far as I could remember.
I, Mila Vellerth, unlike everyone else, felt unconcerned. I walked calmly along the city sidewalks on my way to school. However, there's something—no, rather, a scene—that I can't get out of my mind.
The impact of what I saw was so strong that I could barely sleep last night. I'm obviously talking about that intimate moment between Dasha and Leandra. Damn, it was so cute that I ended up buying a yuri manga over the weekend. Well, technically, I borrowed money from Warren... But the important thing is that I got something to distract myself.
The title of the manga is Insidius Love, written by someone named Luna Van Vestar. I had never heard of her—maybe a new author? The story follows two girls who become idols and, over time, discover their feelings for one another until they start dating. Everything goes well, until one of them betrays the other. The reason? Fame, money, and power.
What a disappointment. I was hoping for a more exciting ending, but I guess I'll have to settle for this. Besides, I don't have any more money to buy another manga...
I sighed and began running when I realized I only had one minute left to get to school. If I'm late again, I know Miss Noir will kill me.
Yet, as I ran, the image of Dasha and Leandra kept replaying in my mind. I wondered: would I ever experience a romance like that? What would it feel like to be lovingly close to the person you love?
******
Once at school, everything seemed normal, though I noticed the seat behind me was still empty.
"Griss..." I murmured.
Of course, Griss was still in the hospital. It wasn't anything serious, and she would be discharged soon, but for some reason, I felt a little lonely. In contrast, the seat to my right was full of life. Warmonger, or rather Warren, was surrounded by several girls from our class. In fact, a crowd of girls from other classes was waiting outside the door. Being popular really has its perks, huh?
"Oh, Warren, I'm so scared~!" Claire said, dramatically placing a hand on her forehead as if she were a damsel in distress.
"There's nothing to fear," Warren replied with his usual confident smile. "If anything happens, I'll protect you."
"Kyaaa~!" The girls screamed excitedly.
'What a lame line... Does that really impress them? How simple-minded!' I wondered if they would still find him charming if they knew how Warren talked when he was alone. No—if they knew he was actually Warmonger! I'd love to see their faces, especially Claire's.
"Silence, class is starting!" Miss Noir exclaimed as she entered the room, wearing her usual tired expression. However, this time, she stopped at the center and called out to people standing outside.
"Yes, come in."
Several people entered the classroom carrying boxes and set them down at the front. Miss Noir opened one of them and, still looking exhausted, turned to the class.
"Due to recent events, the school will implement a mechanism to ensure your safety," she said, holding up a small device resembling a strap with a square screen on top.
She explained how it worked while strapping it onto her arm. The screen displayed her personal information: name, blood type, occupation, and several colored graphs similar to medical monitors.
"This device will serve as identification," she continued. "From now on, no one without it will be allowed into the school. It also monitors your body temperature, heart rate, and includes a GPS. Additionally, you'll be able to send messages to friends and loved ones as long as you have their ID."
With a more serious tone, she added:
"You're probably wondering why. It's simple: after the shopping mall incident, authorities want to monitor all citizens to ensure their safety. This will allow the authorities and Trio Encanto to act more effectively."
The entire class exchanged uncertain glances, but one by one, the students reluctantly began putting on the devices. I, Mila Vellerth, watched in a daze as my classmates obeyed without question... until something hit my red hat.
Bump! I looked at my desk and saw a crumpled ball of paper.
I scanned the room for the culprit. Who dares to bully me? But my eyes met Warren's. His expression was deadly serious, and he gestured for me to open the note.
Warren? I opened the paper to find a strange, black, viscous liquid inside. I carefully picked it up and manipulated it between my fingers. For some reason, its consistency made me feel nauseous.
"Ew..." I muttered.
Bump! Another ball of paper hit my desk. This time, the note read: "Smear that black liquid on your arm. That device isn't for identification; it's actually detecting anomalies in your system to identify sorcerers."
My mind raced. Of course! They haven't told anyone that the culprit is a sorceress! It makes sense that this device is not used merely for monitoring, but also for hunting sorcerers! If I put that device on, I'm in trouble.
Miss Noir stopped beside my desk. When I looked up, I noticed her eyes glowing green. My heart skipped a beat.
Oh no! She's trying to read my mind! That means I'm one of the main suspects...
An intense headache struck me just as Miss Noir's glowing green eyes bore into mine.
However... At that moment, I remembered the words of that hooded girl: "never mind, I've already completed my mission anyway." Her mission was precisely this! To drive the authorities hysterical over the matter and make people begin to doubt Trío Encanto's protection.
