Chapter 187: CA [187]: Freedom
Tina Sprout was living through the most surreal moment of her life. As a Cursed Child, she had been purchased by her master, Dr. Ayn Rand, and trained relentlessly as an assassin. A chip implanted in her neck allowed him to track her every move, turning her into a tool for his missions.
To fund his research, Dr. Rand took on numerous assassination contracts, and Tina, wielding her sniper rifle, had eliminated many regional leaders. So far, none of her targets had been innocent.
This time, her mark was Tokyo's leader, Seitenshi. But her current situation was nothing short of bizarre.
After her identity was exposed, instead of going into hiding, she was led by her supposed ally straight into the Holy Residence, standing face-to-face with her target. Even more surreal, this ally introduced her to Seitenshi by her real name, revealed her IP Rank and owl-type gene, and casually admitted she was an assassin.
And the most astonishing part? Seitenshi just nodded with an "Oh" And seemed completely unbothered. No questions, no suspicions!
As the ruler of an entire region, was it really okay to let an unknown assassin stand in front of you? Was she some kind of naive airhead?
So, Tina stayed in the Holy Residence. To follow her master's orders, she had no choice but to play along, befriending Seitenshi for now and planning to eliminate her tomorrow morning.
She ended up sipping tea and chatting with Altair and Seitenshi, even listening in on their conversation.
"When does Gensei Takanotsume's plane arrive tomorrow?" Altair asked.
"Nine in the morning." Seitenshi replied. "I'll meet him at the airport and hold talks with him."
"He's probably at his most arrogant right now." Altair said. "With Kikunojo Tendo gone, Tokyo's lost its iron grip. Gensei will be feeling unstoppable, thinking no one in Japan can challenge him."
"That's likely true." Seitenshi agreed. "So, as you suggested, Mr. Altair, I'll accept his demands outright. He'll probably be shocked when I do."
"Exactly. He's expecting you to resist, ready to pressure you or even resort to assassination. But by agreeing immediately, you'll render all his preparations useless."
Tina, sipping her drink, inwardly scoffed. The assassination plan was sitting right in front of Seitenshi, and she was clueless. She was even planning to meet Gensei tomorrow, unaware she wouldn't live to see it!
Tina stole a glance at Altair. This ally was impressive, going from a wanted assassin to a trusted advisor inside the Holy Residence, bringing an assassin like her to meet Seitenshi, and openly discussing assassination opportunities while Seitenshi remained oblivious. It was almost too perfect.
She'd thought this mission would be tough, but now it seemed laughably easy. All she needed was a good rest, and tomorrow, one shot would end Seitenshi.
This juice was pretty tasty, though. She could have more.
Tina sipped her juice slowly, finishing the glass. Leaning back on the sofa, she started to nod off. Soon, her breathing steadied, and she slumped, motionless, fast asleep.
Seitenshi smiled at the sight. "Looks like she's out."
"Yep." Altair said, nodding with satisfaction. "That's my special sleep juice. It knocks you out fast, no medicinal ingredients, just pure fruit juice and some unique extracts. No testing device can detect it!"
In the Danmachi world, resource and material shortages had initially limited Altair, even with his Gray Wolf intellect. But after becoming a Campione in the Godslayer world, he gained access to endless resources, allowing him to stock his spatial pocket with research materials. Whipping up something like this was child's play.
"What a pitiful child, forced to be an assassin." Seitenshi said, her compassionate side surfacing. "If she's caught, her fate would be tragic."
"So, if you want to stop this kind of thing from happening, you'd better step up." Altair said. "Play your part well tomorrow, and don't slip up."
"Yes, Mr. Altair." Seitenshi replied, her expression turning serious at his reminder.
"Good. Get some rest. I need to remove the chip from her neck, or she'll still be under surveillance."
Scooping Tina up with one hand, Altair leaped out through the balcony. Seitenshi watched him go, letting out a long sigh.
Leaving the Holy Residence, Altair rode the Flying Nimbus to a medical research lab. In a few swift moves, he extracted the tracking chip from Tina's neck, ensuring Dr. Rand could no longer monitor her. While she was still asleep, he injected her with the inhibitor and sealed a contract with a kiss on her forehead. Sneaking a kiss on a sleeping litle girl made him feel a bit like a litle girlcon, but he brushed it off.
About two hours later, Tina stirred awake, feeling a chill. Opening her eyes, she saw a clear blue sky.
"The sky?" She murmured.
"Yo, you're awake." Altair said, his face appearing in her field of vision.
"Surgery was a success. Tina, you're a boy now."
"What?!" Tina's mind filled with question marks. Panicking, she reached into her clothes, found nothing out of place, and breathed a sigh of relief.
"Haha, you were pretty nervous there." Altair teased.
"Mr. Altair, please don't scare me like that." Tina said, exasperated, then looked around. She was lying on the Flying Nimbus, high in the air.
"Was I asleep? And why are we here?"
"While you were out, I gave you an injection, removed the chip from your neck, and sealed a contract with you. Think about it, you should feel something new in your mind."
Altair tossed her a small makeup mirror, which she caught.
"A mirror? An injection? A chip?" Tina was utterly confused.
"Look in the mirror and try using your powers."
Still puzzled, Tina activated her abilities. To her shock, her powers surged, but her eyes didn't turn red.
"What's this…?"
"It's a Gastrea inhibitor I developed." Altair explained. "It removes the red eyes and turns the Gastrea virus into a harmless tool that only grants strength without spreading. You're free from the virus's erosion. The chip in your neck is gone, so Dr. Rand can't track you anymore. And that new feeling in your mind? That's our contract. It lets you go to Gensokyo, where other Cursed Children live. There, you won't face discrimination or be forced to kill. You can live any life you want."
Tina was floored, her sharp mind and physical sensations confirming Altair's words. She could sense Gensokyo.
"As for why I did this." Altair continued, "first, it's to teach Seitenshi, that naive troublemaker, how harsh the world is. Second, it's a lesson for you. You're the type who won't believe something until you see it for yourself. By showing you everything, I've erased your doubts."
Seitenshi needed to see a child like Tina sent to kill her to steel her resolve. As for Tina, raised and trained by Dr. Rand, she was terrified of him. She wouldn't believe Altair could deal with Rand unless he showed her something far more extraordinary, like Gensokyo.
"So, I'm free from Dr. Rand, and I'm no longer a Cursed Child?" Tina said, piecing it together. "You're not with Dr. Rand or my support. You're with Seitenshi, and you helped me escape him and my curse? You did all this?"
Altair reached out, ruffling her soft blonde hair. "Yep. In short, congratulations, you're free."
"I'm… free?" Tina blinked her large, beautiful eyes, hardly believing it.
Altair nodded, then shook his head. "Well, free-ish. Because of our contract, you either live in Gensokyo or stay with me. So, you're free, but not completely free."
"I see. Live in Gensokyo or stay with you." Tina said, a smile spreading across her face. "That's freedom enough for me. Even though we just met, I can tell you're a good person, Mr. Altair. You won't force me to do things like Dr. Rand did."
litle girls, it seemed, judged by appearances too. Altair's face apparently screamed "good guy."
"No need for the 'good person' stuff." Altair said, waving dismissively. "I don't want to get friend-zoned out of nowhere."
"And it looks like you've made your choice."
"Yep." Tina said. "I want to stay with you. I only know how to fight, so I want to help you, Mr. Altair."
"Alright, then stick with me. And don't you dare forget to thank your Altair-nii."
"Thank you, Onii-chan Altair!" Tina chirped, playing along perfectly, making Altair chuckle.
He ruffled her hair again, then steered the Flying Nimbus forward. Tina sat up beside him, gazing ahead. Their destination was a massive black Monolith.
"Onii-chan, where are we going?" Tina asked, quickly aligning herself with Altair and already thinking about how to assist him.
"That's Tokyo's Monolith 32." Altair said. "It was shoddily built, so its Gastrea-repelling effect is far weaker than the others. Soon, a battle will erupt here, humans versus Gastrea."
He grinned. "On the Gastrea side, we've got the infamous Aldebaran. On the human side, the soon-to-be ruler of Tokyo: President Gensei Takanotsume!"
