Chapter 123: Two Sides~
"Th-this is… impossible!!!!"
-----------------------------
"Boom boom boom boom boom--"
The continuous three barrages turned into a crimson rainbow, piercing through the sky. That fleeting aurora lit up the entire space, scattering brilliant light across the sky, instantly drawing the attention of everyone.
Fighting, fleeing, hiding, everyone stopped what they were doing. This was a spectacle never before seen on the 18th floor.
Even the monsters froze uniformly in place, then were one by one slain by the adventurers who recovered.
"That's your magic, isn't it, Riveria."
Finn instantly saw through the aurora's true form, exchanged glances with Riveria, and without another word rushed toward the scene at his fastest speed.
On the other side of the Twin Crystals Plaza, the chaotic battle had also gradually come to an end.
The sisters Tione and Tiona had cleared out the surrounding monsters together, then regrouped with the panting elven girl in the corner of the plaza.
"No one's being attacked anymore, right? Our mission's over then. What a pain."
"Anyway, who knows what happened. Just now all those monsters froze like wooden stakes, totally blank, hahaha!"
Compared to her naïve younger sister, Tione noticed that something about the development felt strange, especially the abnormal behavior of the Violas.
"Stupid sister, can't you see? That abnormal behavior of the monsters clearly means their tamer was defeated."
"Tamer? Like… the [Ganesha Familia] kind? The kind that puts collars on monsters and trains them with food?"
"I don't know, but that's definitely it! I figured it out with the wisdom I learned from the Captain. Don't you agree that the Captain's always right?"
As she spoke, Tione's black hair swayed.
"? Isn't it you who's always being tricked, sis."
"What nonsense are you saying! The one who's tricked is the naïve you!"
"No way, I'm not!"
Seeing the sisters about to argue again, Lefiya had no choice but to step forward and hurriedly calm them down.
"Um, um… Miss Tione, Miss Tiona, shouldn't we go help? That monster looks really dangerous."
"The octopus monster? Gross, our group doesn't need to deal with that kind of thing!"
Tione refused directly.
"But I saw the Captain and Riveria already heading over."
"Let's go quickly, we must help the Captain!"
Watching Tione dash off so fast her figure blurred, Tiona and Lefiya were left dumbfounded like being swept up in a whirlwind.
Her sister's lovestruck expression was completely exposed.
"Th-this… is just too realistic."
As for Lefiya, her body seemed drained of strength, forcing out awkward laughs.
"Ha, hahaha…"
...
"Isn't that pretty cool-"
The young man smiled as he said that, and then,
Thud.
His body fell backward onto the ground, scattering a layer of crystal dust.
Just like that, he collapsed rigidly to the floor, the hero who a second ago had been so awe-inspiring, in the next moment left her side.
"Fron!!!!"
The golden-haired girl's beautiful face that was always blank twisted, her eyes widened in disbelief as tears streamed uncontrollably down her cheeks.
"No, no way, it can't be! You can't die! The hero I finally waited for, how, how could this… No, it can't be, it definitely can't be!"
She broke free of Lulune's embrace, stumbling as though she might collapse, then fell to her knees beside the young man. Clutching his not-so-rough hands tightly, her tears flowed endlessly.
"Sw-sword Princess, h-he's fine, he's still breathing."
Seeing the situation spiraling out of control, the anxious supporter hastily reminded them, pointing out the faint signs of life.
"Right, the backpack, the backpack! Where's Fron's backpack!"
Weak breathing, his chest still rising and falling, he was still alive.
With her senses slowly returning, her frenzied emotions calmed slightly. She then desperately began searching for the supporter's backpack that had been thrown aside earlier.
"H-here it is!"
Terrified by Ais' frightening expression, Lulune stammered as she handed over the tightly strapped pack.
"Potion, medicine, where is it!? Fron's so cautious, he definitely brought elixirs!"
Rummaging through the pack, she finally found several vials in the right-side pocket.
Pop, she pulled out a stopper and poured the potion directly over his body, then grabbed another and held it to his lips.
But his tightly shut, parched lips made it impossible for the potion to flow down his throat. In desperation, Ais ignored everything else, tilted her head back and drank the precious elixir herself, then bent down, personally feeding it to Fron mouth-to-mouth.
This scene, because of a mistake, painted such a beautifully tragic picture.
...
--!???
"???"
"???"
Finn and Riveria turned at the crossroads of the crystal street. Almost at the same time, their bodies froze in place.
Gazing at the ruined battlefield ahead, at the interaction between Ais and Fron, they exchanged glances and saw shock in each other's eyes.
"This… this is truly an unexpected development!"
"This is a path I had never even imagined. Seems like my thumb isn't working so well either."
Finn licked his thumb, his expression a bit awkward.
Riveria, however, revealed a gentle smile, her gratified gaze lingering back and forth between Ais and Fron, growing more satisfied the longer she looked.
"Have they finally reached this step? These children have really worried me to no end. Luckily, they didn't disappoint me."
"I say, Riveria. Shouldn't we be hurrying over to check on Fron's condition? Ais is already so shaken, it's urgent, isn't it?"
Yet the elven royal only lifted the corners of her mouth, smiling as she watched Ais feed medicine to Fron, and shook her head.
"Wouldn't it be quite awkward if we showed up now? And besides… although I don't know exactly what happened between them, Fron isn't in serious danger. It's just a common mage's symptom, [Mind Down]."
"Uh, overexerted magic power?"
"Merely fainted, that's all. Look at that terrain over there, completely transformed by magic, they must have faced quite a formidable enemy."
Finn narrowed his eyes, carefully imprinting every detail of the battlefield into his mind, quickly piecing together the cause and effect.
"Something doesn't quite add up. Did you notice? For an enemy that forced Fron to this point, Ais is practically unscathed. But judging from her expression, that's not the case. The issue, could it be with Ais?"
Riveria moved her gaze away from the two, looking instead at the half-human, half-octopus monster being relentlessly chased down by Tione and Tiona.
"Perhaps the answer lies with that one."
"Let's wait a little longer."
Gulp
From a distance, the two quietly kept watch over them, awaiting his awakening.
As for that newly parasitized Violas? Sorry, as a variant species, it's still just an infant. Before devouring a magic stone, in the face of two top-class Lv.5 adventurers, its fate is obvious. Its very birth was a joke.
"Hah-ya!" Sure enough, the enemy scrambled frantically up the wall of the 18th floor, shrieking hideously.
"Bastard, shut the hell up! You're noisy as hell!"
Tione chased close behind, cursing loudly as she suddenly increased her speed!
Her figure blurred from sheer velocity, then she stomped hard on the blue crystal surface, leaping high, crossing the very space called distance. With a sharp cry, she kicked the enemy square in the upper body.
"Arghhhh, arghhhhhhh!"
It panicked, it trembled in fear. The monster plummeted from midair, its despair weighing it down like a curse. Powerless, inertia overtook its body, despair descended.
"Watch this, hiyaaa!"
From above, Tiona descended like a invincible soldier, wielding the second-generation [Orga].
With a slicing sound, she cleaved the monster's entire body cleanly in half.
Inside the split enormous body, the exposed orange magic stone shattered beneath her strike, crumbling into powder. Body and stone alike dissolved into dust, leaving nothing behind.
Tione grabbed a vine with one hand, her whole body hanging against the wall, muttering under her breath.
"I say, you even destroyed the magic stone! We still owe a huge debt, you know."
Tiona landed on the rock with a playful bounce, pulling a face at her sister.
"Hehehe, I got too carried away cutting, forgot all about it, blehh!"
"Honestly, I can't deal with you… you…"
"Hehehe, as long as Finn and Riveria didn't see, it's fine. You're so naggy, Tione!"
"What? You dare call me naggy? You're the one who messed up! And you think I'll cover for you with the captain? My foolish sister!"
"Y-y-y-you!"
The battle had only just ended, yet the Amazoness sisters were already quarreling openly again.
...
With the monsters attacking Rivira Town vanquished, cheers of adventurers echoed across the town's sky.
Weapons raised, armor cast aside, embracing each other, some cheered ecstatically, others wept bitterly. All kinds of emotions played out.
After a life-and-death battle, having finally defeated the monsters, they celebrated their glory. This moment perfectly embodied, what it means to be an adventurer.
In stark contrast to the raucous celebration, a stillness pervaded the woods not far from the crystal street.
Plop., a ragged, blood-red figure collapsed backward into the lake.
Dim light filtered down from the blue crystals covering the cavern ceiling, scattering broken rays of light across the rippling, beautiful lake. As though a stone had been tossed in, the tranquil surface erupted into waves.
And in that moment, a pair of icy, emerald-green eyes flashed, then vanished…
