Chapter 4: Psyche
The pain remained unwavering, its intensity neither increasing nor decreasing, stuck in a torturous standstill. Despite its constancy, the effect was relentless, forcing him to clutch his head vigorously.
Suddenly, everything went dark, as if a switch had been flipped. The AP-01 serum had found the solution to perfectly synthesizing the sentient serum with his brain, minimizing drawbacks and beginning its intricate work.
The serum influenced his brain, forcefully secreting endorphins in large quantities, which caused an immediate loss of consciousness and alleviated the pain.
It started by moving to the prefrontal cortex, enhancing higher-level cognitive functions like reasoning and decision-making. Within seconds, it traveled to the hippocampus, bolstering memory formation and retrieval.
The serum then targeted the parietal lobes, improving sensory processing and spatial navigation, followed by the temporal lobes, enhancing auditory processing and language skills. The cerebellum was next, refining motor control and cognitive processes.
Neurons sprang to life with increased activity, and neural networks fired through the brain at incomprehensible speeds. New neurons were generated on an unprecedented scale, far exceeding expectations.
The serum enhanced synaptic plasticity, neurotransmitter levels, cerebral blood flow, and mitochondrial efficiency, ensuring a holistic boost to his intelligence.
And with a snap, everything came together to form a perfect picture. The serum, exhausted, was now perfectly infused with the brain...
**Few hours later**
Under a blinding light, a slight grumble echoed through the room. His eyes opened as they immediately glanced around instinctively.
"Is it over?" he questioned thoughtfully, finally pushing off the ground to his feet. The first thing he noticed was the absence of the piercing, agonizing pain he had felt. The next thing he noticed was the clarity of his vision, far beyond normal limits. Even things beyond his peripheral vision could not escape his sight, granting him perfect 180-degree vision.
He immediately made his way towards a reflective surface, feeling an unsettling need to. "My eyes, they are blue?" he questioned, shutting and opening his eyes repeatedly before confirming.
Just then, before he could continue his inspection, he suddenly heard a click and surprisingly immediately knew what it was. In an uncoordinated response, he ran towards the entrance, which opened up the moment he got close, and as he exited, the doors closed with a slight hum, the lights turning off on their own.
Quickly making his way out of the basement, he hurriedly dusted the cobwebs stuck to his head, just in time to come face to face with her.
"Rex, perfect timing... can you help me with the groceries in the car?" she requested, walking into the kitchen and towards the fridge with some of the groceries.
Rex, not planning on making two trips, struggled to carry everything all at once.
Just making his way into the kitchen to drop off the groceries, he immediately noticed the disappearance of the pots—both the jollof rice and fried chicken were missing.
Sighing in defeat, he could only glance towards the stairs, resigning his hope of having some leftovers for dinner. Now it seemed he had to get something else to eat, but there were more important things to handle at the moment.
So, quickly dropping the bags, he made his way to his room, locking the door behind him.
"Sentient serum and AP-01 serum—they were never mentioned or revisited in the series," he immediately noted. Without deep thought, he deduced multiple reasons for this. Maybe it was due to the low impact on the plot, or maybe he was never supposed to survive in the first place. Many reasons were listed, both absurd and logical, but none were too far-fetched to explain why they were never mentioned in the series.
Snapping out of his thoughts, a smile was immediately plastered on his face. "It definitely worked alright, maybe too well, but what else am I capable of?"
A spark of excitement lit up within him, unavoidably reflecting the psyche of a teenager, making his expression joyous as he thought of the things he might now be capable of.
"Photographic memory, perfect recall" his thoughts fired through possible perks he could have obtained. But a part of felt no need for the excitement, feeling the burst of excitement and emotion as a growing weakness, and with a final override the smile disappeared replaced by indifference as he made his way his desk.
"Let's start with something simple" he said quickly jotting down some minor calculations, '12879043x290267' and almost instantaneously, the moment his eyes made contact with the written contents, his brain immediately went it overdrive and subconsciously he whispered 373,836,030,368.
"Ok...That's at least enough to buy my expectation" he thought, with that he grabbed one of his textbooks both maths and physics, two subject the previous holder of the body had major difficulties with.
But to his surprise the moment he opened the books, he was forced to close it immediately. "This, it's, it's marvelous" he couldn't help but admit. The moment he had opened the book and laid eyes on it's content, everything of it instantaneous became clear, he couldn't describe it, it was fascinating, yet scary at the same time, he felt hungry, hungry for more knowledge. Unable to resist any longer, he finally opened the book as his brain swallowed all the content a sense of satisfaction welled up on his face.
"The possibilities..."
**One month later**
"By elucidating the intricacies of epigenetic modifications, such as DNA methylation and histone acetylation, and their regulatory impact on gene expression, we can begin to comprehend the multifaceted mechanisms underpinning phenotypic diversity. This knowledge not only illuminates the etiological pathways of polygenic disorders but also paves the way for precision medicine, where therapeutic interventions can be tailored to the unique genetic and epigenetic landscape of an individual."
"You know when I asked you to give me an example of what you've been learning, that wasn't what I meant. Maybe try something simpler."
"Through rigorous application of quantum field theory and the exploration of emergent phenomena in condensed matter sys—"
"Just forget I asked." Glancing at her son with a tired look, she couldn't help but wonder why he had been acting strange for the past few days. It began about a month ago when he started cooking delicious meals, which she had to admit were quite impressive.
Heading out, she gave him a peck on the cheek and warned him to avoid detection, making sure no one knew he was home.
"Now back to business," he muttered before turning to his computer. He had been diligently watching coding lessons and reading various textbooks, feeling almost ready to embark on his project, yet still hesitant about bringing his idea to life.
Creating an artificial intelligence—how hard could it be? he thought as his fingers moved across the keyboard, typing lines of code. He was writing the core algorithm of the AI, aiming for minimal errors, though he knew some would be inevitable given his recent deep dive into the subject.
"This took long but am finally done," he rejoiced happily with a smile. He had started writing the core program a week ago and, after some proof-checking, he noticed a few errors. That was when an idea sparked: Why not create a self-learning, self-improving, adaptive, evolving AI?
Now it was on to phase two. He took a sip of water and glanced at the small black box on his table, its edges glowing faintly. The more he stared at the box, the more fascinated he became. During his search around the lab, he had discovered the black box labeled as experimental confiscated junk tech, salvaged by his father before his suspension.
Inside, he found high-performance processing units, including advanced GPUs and TPUs for parallel processing. It also had multi-core quantum processors acting as the CPU, allowing for complex calculations and high-speed processing.
One of the parts he was most fascinated with was the hybrid storage system, capable of holding an unreal amount of data. The box also had a built-in high-speed network interface, a quantum communication module for instantaneous secure data exchange, an advanced heat dissipation mechanism, and an energy-efficient power management system.
He could go on for days about its features, but now he needed to move on to the next stage, which would take weeks. With school about to resume, he knew his time was limited and he needed to finish as soon as possible to start enacting his plans.
