Invasion of the United States

Chapter 31: Shelter_2

If provoked, the attendants and guards would pull the trigger without hesitation.

At worst, these agents could be stuffed into body bags—there are so many dead now that those who draw their last breath in the morning can be pushed into the crematorium by afternoon.

Especially in a place like a hospital, unidentified bodies are not unusual at all.

Once the gunfire starts, that mop, already filthy, can easily clean up the blood on the floor, covering everything.

No one would be able to trace it.

Diaz looked at the hostile gazes and the ominous gun muzzles around him, beads of sweat appeared on his forehead, realizing that his usual assertiveness had triggered public anger.

He took a deep breath, suppressing the anger and fear in his heart, slowly raised his hands, and squeezed out a stiff smile on his face:

"Calm down, calm down, don't be nervous. We are just conducting routine inquiries. If you don't know, that's fine, we'll be on our way."

Professor Hart, in charge of the hospital, watched cold-eyed at this, but he knew that to avoid escalating the situation, he had to relocate the source of the incident, 'Victor', to a different place.

Where should he send him?

Simply kicking him out didn't seem right; his strengths should be utilized to give him a better platform—promote him!

A day ago, Old Hammer replaced the pilot who had died unexpectedly and successfully escaped Washington D.C. flying the DC-3.

The old aircraft flew fifty kilometers with a dozen women and children, landing on Virginia's Highway 95.

During landing, the tires burst directly, the fuselage skidded, and almost crashed into the roadside barrier. Thankfully, the DC-3 was lightly loaded, without much fuel, and after sliding several hundred meters, it finally stopped stably.

Inside the cabin, a dozen frightened women and children huddled together. Most of them had husbands and fathers who remained forever in Washington's blood-soaked museum.

The sole survivor, Zhou Qingfeng, did not board the plane.

At this moment, the survivors supported each other as they descended the gangway, collapsing in a circle at the highway's edge, their suppressed sobs drifting in the morning mist.

Only Old Hammer remained optimistic, boasting proudly after completing the flight, "Lucy, wasn't Grandpa impressive!

I haven't flown a plane in over ten years, yet I still haven't forgotten the craft. Back in the day, I flew planes through the jungles of South America, it was thrilling."

It was indeed thrilling, Lucy's face turned pale during the landing. It wasn't until the plane came to a stable stop that she slumped in relief.

"Grandpa, get off the plane, we must leave immediately."

Catching her breath, Lucy unbuckled her seatbelt and opened the cabin door. She checked her phone signal and called Chen Rui to report the situation.

Half an hour later, Chen Rui arrived with a small Cessna airplane to pick up the grandfather and granddaughter.

As for the other escaping women and children, they could only be given some food and water, directing them to seek help in nearby towns.

Leveraging the tens of thousands of small airports scattered across the United States, small planes like Cessnas are more useful in the countryside than even the Warthog.

"Where are we heading now?" Old Hammer asked, puzzled.

"To the shelter Victor prepared," Lucy sighed. The numerous shelters Zhou Qingfeng had created were now proving their worth.

The Cessna flew over 300 kilometers and landed on a dirt runway. Beside the runway was a forest playground that had gone bankrupt due to poor management, themed 'Wizard of Oz'.

In prosperous times, this playground must have hosted thousands of visitors. But as the United States aged, it was abandoned in the wilderness.

Once-bustling playgrounds now only have faded cartoon signs swaying in the wind, the carousel's roof has a large hole exposing rusted steel frames inside.

Zhou Qingfeng used this place as a shelter; he himself didn't enjoy it, yet it wasn't in vain. This chapter is from the collection at M-VL-EM-PYR.

As Chen Rui landed, several other small planes also landed, with external vehicles entering the place.

Chen Rui didn't leave his plane; he only contacted the temporary control tower, waited for ground service to refuel, and took off again, destination unknown.

As Old Hammer and Lucy stood anxiously by the desolate runway, a dilapidated electric tour cart crawled out from the playground, grinding across the gravel path.

Xiao Jinlang sat in the driver's seat, showing a gentle smile on his somewhat tired face, waving towards them.

"You two, come on up. You're safe now, but for everyone's safety, please cooperate with the necessary isolation and disinfection procedures, ensuring no virus enters the playground."

This was the first time the grandfather and granddaughter saw Xiao Jinlang.

Lucy didn't have time to observe the surrounding environment, hurriedly explained to him the situation of Zhou Qingfeng not coming along, filled with worry and concern.

"I know." Xiao Jinlang nodded calmly, "Victor's radio has kept intermittent contact with us, he's already explained the situation over there."

The electric tour cart slowly entered the dilapidated playground, passing a path covered with dry fallen leaves, through a long-since dried fountain.

In the center of the fountain stood fairy tale statues originally vibrant in color, now covered with marks of time, with withered vines resembling an old man's white hair hopelessly entwining them, adding to the bleakness.

This abandoned playground covered about a hundred acres, with corroded and non-operational amusement facilities, and scattered with several dilapidated hotels and abandoned residential buildings.

Fortunately, the playground had a standalone water and power supply system, which although had been abandoned for years, could be put back into use with some repair.
