Chapter 83 - Getting Married
The desperate cries of the helmet were so intense that it forced the sleeping forest to life. Birds flew into the sky, rustling the leaves, and small rodents began to scurry in every direction. The soldiers spoke in harsh whispers, attempting to figure out what was happening.
While the soldiers were focused on the distraction, Leo picked up Marem and began to sprint. He needed only the slightest running start before he leaped into the air. With no one focused on their surroundings anymore, the two of them flew through the sky unnoticed.
Leo had become fairly skilled with landing; he could easily land with little damage and high precision. He just needed to land slightly past the house, a short jump that would keep them hidden from the soldiers. A simple plan.
What he hadn’t expected was the magical barrier emanating from the gates of the house. It felt like the air had been replaced with a solid foot of cling wrap. The barrier would’ve been impassable for most people, stopping them from entering. Thankfully, it didn’t stop the two of them. It just slowed them down.
When they finally broke through the magical barrier, which seemed to have a near suffocating effect, Leo realized that his landing was now far off course. He only had a moment to react before he collided into Marem’s roof. There wasn’t enough time to try and dodge, he just held her close and hoped to not tear through the house.
I heard some type of commotion going on outside, but I just hoped that it would resolve itself. There was no way in hell I would get up to deal with whatever ghost was having a seizure out there. It worked for all of five seconds, and suddenly my danger sense activated.
I shot out of my bed in a fluid motion, and with an extended hand I called upon my cool sword. It was known as the legendary mythic grade heaven blessed godsword of divine power. The name was a bit too long, though, so I just called it the cool sword.
I saw the roof of my bedroom collapse, as two people fell through it. I almost leaped into action and started attacking, but I felt something inside me warn against it. The handful of wives who were with me became startled at the commotion, they called out asking what was happening.
Once the dust started to settle, I was able to recognize one of the intruders. My firstborn daughter, Marem, was dressed up in another gaudy outfit and covered in sawdust and woodchips. Who I didn’t recognize was the guy that was carrying her.
He looked like a complete loser. His brown hair was a mess, and he seemed to be wearing some damaged rags. There was some odd design on his chest, likely a religious symbol. The only noteworthy thing about him was his build, he looked stronger than Zarnith, the eighth demon king. I squinted my eyes so Bluebo would give me a report on him.
[Leo Eule - Human]
[Class: Barbarian of Chains]
[Combat Potential: High]
[Personality: Leo is a crybaby pacifist that tries not to kill anyone. Has an annoying habit of not understanding anything and always making it someone else’s problem. He is also that annoying corrupted case I told you about.]
I was wondering why his personality assessment was so negative, but that last line made it clear. When Bluebo told me about someone unknown having access, I doubted there would be anything I could do about it. Yet, here the annoyance is, currently carrying my daughter.
I channeled my magic through the room, activating the lights that weren’t destroyed by their entrance. Marem’s eyes winced at the sudden change, but he seemed to be staring at me all the same. He looked around the room, clearly unsure what to do.
Marem spoke first, “Hey dad, I’m back.”
I looked up at my new skylight. “Really? I couldn’t tell.”
“Sorry about that,” he spoke up.
“Sorry doesn’t get me a new roof,” I glared at him.
Most people would have shit themselves at this point. He just had an embarrassed look on his face, like he broke a glass at dinner. I knew there was something up with this guy, but this felt near insulting. While I have been gone for quite a while, I was still one of the most powerful adventurers to ever exist.
“Dad, don’t be an ass,” she glared back at me.
“What? He just broke my damn roof. Why the hell would I be nice?” I demanded.
“Could you at least try to be calm for once? Just try and listen,” she argued.
I wanted to fight back, but I could sense an anger building up behind her eyes. She’d always had a rebellious streak, and I hoped that her mission would’ve helped tame her. It definitely didn’t seem to do that. I figured it would be best to just let her get some of that anger out for now.
I unsummoned my cool sword. “Fine.”
Only now did she get out of that brute’s arms. She cleaned the mess off her hair and clothes while the oaf just stood around. Without her in front of him, I was able to get a better look at him. More specifically, I was able to get a better look at his mangled shirt. Was he wearing a fucking hoodie?
“Okay, so this is Leo. We just beat up Venox and the kingdom is looking for us. You were nearby so we came to hide here for a while. There’s about a dozen royal soldiers out there distracted by a screaming helmet. Going through the air was the best way to get inside, but the landing got messed up,” she explained.
I let out a sigh. “God, you’re already doing a whole rebellion arc? Look, this goth vibe is whatever, but you’re just being ridiculous now. Did you even finish the mission I gave you?”
“Yes, I did.”
“Wait, no, don’t tell me.”
“Yup. Leo and I are getting married.”
“Alright, I’m just not going to deal with this. We’ll talk in the morning.”
She already knew the deal and began to leave the room, but her moronic fiancé wasn’t as clued in. She grabbed his arm and led him out, hopefully to a guest room. Being a parent wasn’t ever easy, but this sucked.
I focused my magical energy into the house, concentrating on the roof. The broken pieces scattered on the floor began to float back into place. It didn’t take long to repair, and thankfully, that annoying screaming finally came to a stop. I just went to bed, already tired for the day to come.
