Chapter 331 - Completing tasks before the weekend
I spent my Thursday outside the academe and even slept in the inn too. I decided that my Friday will be spent both inside and outside the academe grounds.
Though I have enlisted in my classes through the student identification bracelet, I still made it a point to visit each of the professors that will teach in those classes. It has been something I have been doing from the start of my studies as a sign of respect and of course, to show my goodwill, hoping for good scores too.
I also visited the academe headmaster before the old man starts to feel bad about being ignored. I am quite sure he knows that I came back and left a few times already without meeting him. I brought him some souvenirs from my travels as gifts and yeah, you can call it a bribe too.
I also squeezed in a few missions from the adventurer's guild for the last two days to ensure that my license will not be revoked. I still do easy missions like harvesting resources or hunting low rank beasts for alchemy materials and meat but those do not earn that many coins. It wa just my excuse to spend some time in the forests to relax.
I have been submitting reports that contain information on maps as well as what flora and fauna can be found in the areas I have visited outside the empire. This was an alternate route I chose to increase my adventurer rank faster. It has worked in my favor since I have been visiting other places for my immersion too.
With my trips outside the academe and the empire, I have also found other raw ingredients that can serve as alternatives to the ones I used to see back in earth. I have experimented on a few more condiments and sauces from them. I have succeeded a few times and the recipes for those, I have submitted to the chef association to get patents and a new stream of income.
When I was done visiting the adventurer, chef and alchemy guilds, I sneaked inside the magic tower then straight to the room of questions to earn a few more coins. When I saw the question board, I was amazed at how many more pieces of paper have been stuck on it compared to the last time I visited. I only answer a set number of questions per month and I guess not many answers that were provided for the last few months were correct. If these questions ended up on this board, it means nobody else in the magic tower could answer them as well.
Just for this time, I answered 20 of the oldest questions stuck on the board. My reasons are of course, money and magical research advancement as well. Might as well, have these mage researchers do something since my in-laws are giving them financial support to look for ways to improve life in Athanoviya.
I was too focused on answering the 20 questions that I did not notice somebody has entered the room then sat a few tables across from me. When I looked up, I saw Keeran staring at me. It was not the usual angry and accusing look that he had whenever we meet before but it was all the more creepy for me. He was looking at me with a mix of gentleness and longing.
I stood up and placed all my answers in the designated box, making sure that each one is attached to the questions they are intended for. As I stood up, Keeran did as well. I ignored him as if he wasn't there and started walking to exit the room of questions.
I heard his footsteps as he followed behind me but he still kept his distance by a few steps away. I don't know if he is trying to give me space or openly stalking me. Honestly, I don't feel annoyed anymore but now I am just creeped out.
I greeted the receptionist and asked if the tower grandmaster is currently in his office. Before the receptionist can answer, I heard a deep voice from behind me saying, "Grandfather is inside the office. He's just reading some documents."
I did not look back at him or respond to him. I smiled again at the receptionist and walked towards the library to check on a few books. I took several books that talk about poisons and their corresponding antidotes, alchemy books that I have not read before and also books on plants and their healing effects. I went to the counter to borrow them then placed them in my storage bracelet.
On my peripheral vision, I saw a few young mages approach the place where I was. I am sure that it was not me who they are intending to speak to but the man behind me. As expected, about 6 students surrounded him and started asking him magical research questions.
While he was distracted, I suddenly teleported in front of the "magic elevator" and stepped in to it to go up to the grandmaster's office. For security purposes, the tower only allows teleportation within a floor and not between floors so there is no way to reach other floors besides this elevator.
As expected, I saw Keeran hurriedly excusing himself from the 6 student mages that were flanking him and he teleported near the platform I as well. He must have wanted to join me in the same platform but couldn't since the platform has started to move upwards.
I think he has lost all sense of shame as he has found a new hobby, following me like a lost puppy everywhere I went, for all the people in the magic tower to see. He was acting like a personal guard hovering around me wherever I go while inside the library.
I reached the topmost floor of the tower in a mere few seconds. I knocked on the door and I heard Grandpa Mage's voice letting me in. I hurriedly opened the door as I felt that the magic platform is going up at a highspeed and I am quite sure that Keeran is on it.
Just before I closed the door, I saw him exit the elevator. I quickly closed the door, the sound louder than I intended it to be. It was like I slammed the door on his face.
I looked at Grandpa Mage and he smiled at me with a knowing look. He then spoke, "I know that you want to talk to me in private so I won't let that troublesome grandson of mine inside."
I smiled at him gratefully and went straight to sit on his comfy guest chairs. I started pulling out gifts and souvenirs from my storage that I have planned to give him then placed it on the marble table.
As expected, I heard an urgent knock. It was later than usual. Keeran must have been shocked on how I ran away from him and even shut the door loudly on his face. I then heard his voice, a bit softer than I remember, "Grandfather, can I come in, please?"
I looked at Grandpa Mage and shook my head. He nodded in understanding and responded, "I have a guest as of the moment. I will call for you later once my guest has left."
I heard Keeran's voice again, now using a more begging tone "Grandfather, please. I promise to behave. I just need to talk with Luna. I don't know why she's avoiding me. I need to apologize if I did anything wrong."
Grandpa Mage responded again, "I will tell you what we will talk about later. Go and do other things for now."
With a wave of his hand, the door disappeared and it was replaced by a solid wall. I felt the surroundings being enveloped by a familiar barrier, a soundproofing one that I also liked using.
Afterwards, Grandpa Mage immediately asked, "I heard that you actually asked my grandson to wait for your answer till you come back from your immersion in the North early next year?"
I sighed and nodded my head. I responded with wary voice, "He cried and confessed his feelings out of the blue. I did not have the heart to outright say no so I kind of delayed my answer. He readily accepted it and he said he will wait patiently. I did not know he will turn to a different person afterwards. It is really creeping me out."
Grandpa Mage laughed with his modulated voice like how Santa Claus does. He then teased me a bit, "You can take it as him meeting you had good effects. He started working on his tasks diligently, even taking in other tasks to earn more money. He became totally docile too. He must have feared that you will hear bad things about him that will affect on what your answer will be in the next few months. I am actually very thankful to you."
I looked at Grandpa Mage and asked, "What if I say no by then? Would it not make him return to how he was, maybe even worse?"
Instead of answering my question, he talked about other things about the guy. He continued, "He started reading books on how to make his future wife happy in the bedroom. He also enrolled in classes on how to cook, how to do basic household chores correctly, how to take care of himself during pregnancy and even proper child care. Do you even have the heart to say no to him?"
I looked at Grandpa Mage but couldn't muster any response on the things he said. I held my forehead and sighed in exasperation instead. Grandpa Mage laughed again and added, "He did not have any mana flare ups since the day you asked him to wait for your answer."
I covered my face with both hands, realizing what kind of trap I have put myself into. Before, I was annoyed just with his presence so much that I did not want to see even his shadow. Now that he looks at me like a lovesick puppy and after knowing that he was doing so many useless things just to be with me, how would I even say no to him now. Ugh.
I removed my hands from my face and looked at Grandpa Mage then carefully asked, "Do you want me to give him a chance? Are you really sure that you want to entrust the only kin you have left to me?"
Grandpa Mage smiled at me and replied, "Please take care of us in the future, granddaughter-in-law." I looked up the ceiling and responded, "Fine. Don't tell him yet though. I am teleporting out of here."
