Chapter 6: reborn
Reincarnation was a thing of beauty.
Being born was like a new life being accepted into the world. But rebirth was different.
It was firsthand experience—being born while retaining all memories of the past, still felt and acknowledged.
As the soft light pierced through the windows of the room and the final push was given, a pair of golden irises opened, and the world instantly came into view.
At first, everything was blurry, but soon, a captivating scene took shape.
"..."
"He's a boy."
"A boy! Wow, how wonderful."
In the room, only three people were present—a midwife, a woman lying on the bed after giving birth, and an assistant to the midwife.
All three bore expressions of joy. The reason? The woman had not just given birth to one child but two.
Yuka, who had stepped into the portal, now found himself in this predicament. He had been reincarnated as a baby.
It was surprising, even though he had expected something like this to happen.
But why a baby? Why not a grown man or even a teenager? The idea of reliving the journey from infancy to adulthood felt tedious.
As he pondered endlessly, the midwife gently placed him into the arms of his mother, right beside his twin sister.
His mother sat on the bed, though the usual warmth of a mother's embrace was absent. She seemed happy yet held a look of discontent.
Was she disappointed by the number of babies?
Perhaps she was one of those women who desired three or four children at once. Well, tough luck for her.
"This one looks like his father."
She stroked Yuka's forehead ever so slightly, her tone empty, leaving him confused about what she meant.
Come to think of it, where was his father? Shouldn't he be rushing in with a wide grin, excited to see his newborn children?
But this was different. Strangely different.
Maybe the customs of his previous life didn't apply to this world. After all, this was a completely new existence.
"Bring me the Wishing Stone."
His mother's words made the midwife visibly uneasy.
"..."
"Did you not hear me?" It wasn't until she spoke with a more authoritative tone that the midwife moved.
She hurried across the room, opened a drawer, and retrieved a yellow crystal.
The midwife's hesitation was enough to suggest that whatever was about to happen did not bode well.
"Queen Melissa, please… isn't this a bit too early?" she pleaded, carefully choosing her words.
But Queen Melissa's command was absolute. The midwife reluctantly stepped forward and placed the crystal in her hand.
The Wishing Stone was a rock-like artifact adorned with intricate markings of a tree and other symbols related to their culture.
Queen Melissa pressed the crystal against Yuka's sister, and it emitted a dazzling light.
Her expression remained unchanged as she then placed the crystal in Yuka's tiny hands.
For a while, nothing happened. But then, a faint glow emerged—far dimmer than his sister's.
The purpose of the test became clear. It was a measurement of their abilities.
And from the looks of it, Yuka was clearly weaker.
Queen Melissa retrieved the crystal and handed it back to the midwife.
"I will name my children now. Please leave," she said, her tone softer than before.
The midwife stepped forward, took the crystal, bowed, and left the room alongside the assistant.
As soon as the door shut and Queen Melissa was certain no one was watching, tears welled up in her eyes and streamed down her face.
The composure she had maintained from the beginning of labor to the end finally crumbled.
"It hurts… Why aren't you here to see this?" She bit her lip hard, memories of her husband flooding her mind.
A tiny tug on her clothing pulled her back to the present.
She looked down to see Yuka, tugging at her garments for none other than…
Breast milk.
"I see… I should feed you both," Queen Melissa murmured, her voice soft and soothing. She gently lifted Yuka with one hand and unfastened her garment slightly, exposing her breast.
It was quite a mesmerizing sight.
Yuka was brought closer, and without hesitation, he latched on.
To his disappointment, breast milk was awful. It was like drinking water with a strange taste. However, it was warm, and as he drank, he felt its soothing warmth spread through his body.
The sensation was oddly gratifying.
After a few moments, he was placed back in his mother's lap while his sister took her turn nursing.
Queen Melissa stared off distantly at times, lost in thought, before pulling herself back to reality.
Once she was done breastfeeding, she adjusted her clothing and buttoned it up.
It was finally time to name them.
Since the baby girl was in her arms, she decided to name her first. Taking her time, she carefully chose the best name for her daughter.
"I'll name you… Nimora Vance."
Then, she picked up Yuka next and said, "And you… I will call you Asher Vance."
Meanwhile…
On the other side of the door, the midwife leaned against the polished oakwood, absentmindedly rolling the Wishing Stone between her fingers.
A nagging thought refused to leave her mind. No matter how much she tried to dismiss it, curiosity gnawed at her.
Why wouldn't it? After all, she had nothing else to do at the moment.
Her suspicion about Asher's lower reading compared to his sister's felt off.
As she continued fiddling with the crystal, her fingers brushed against something unusual.
A rough edge. Too rough to be part of the design.
She brought it closer and inspected it carefully. Her sharp eyes caught sight of a crack running along the surface.
The only way a crystal of this grade could break was if the mana within the person being tested far exceeded the crystal's capacity.
But this was a child-testing crystal…
How was that even possible?
Could it be…?
"One of them has that much mana at birth?"
