Chapter 79: Everest (2)
Web-like cracks appeared on the surface of the frozen skeleton, making Arthur's gaze snap toward it.
A second later, a deafening crack split the air as shards of ice burst in all directions, a gale of icy wind sweeping through and blinding their sight.
Arthur's breath caught as he instinctively stepped back.
In front of him and his mother wasn't the skeleton of a dead woman but a fully grown white dragon with golden eyes that looked divine.
The dragon glared at Arthur with a piercing gaze and said, "Why do you have the scent of my sister on your soul? Did you sleep with her?"
"What?" Arthur muttered, confused.
The demonic dragon lowered her head closer to Arthur's face, but even with his enhanced senses, he couldn't move or react.
His body knew instinctively that any movement would lead only to death.
The demonic dragon repeated:
"Why does Syr'Nathira's scent linger on your soul?"
'She knows Nathira?' Arthur thought. 'That means the ancestor of the demonic dragon was the second daughter of the first dragon and Nathira's older sister.'
Arthur held her gaze, voice calm. "Nathira is my wife."
"What?!" the dragon roared.
She stared at him as if examining him. "You are impressive even more so than my mother was. But for you to say that baby sis married you...? And didn't invite me?"
Arthur quickly picked up on the shift in her tone as she muttered to herself.
After a brief pause, thinking out loud, she asked:
"So what is my brother-in-law doing in the Arcain clan? Don't tell me my sister wants all my treasures now that I'm dead?"
Arthur shook his head. "I came here as your descendant."
The white demonic dragon lowered her head again. "You're my descendant?"
Arthur nodded.
"Fascinating. I thought I could never give birth to a boy after that damn old elf cursed me when I stole part of his useless plant."
'Useless plant?' Arthur questioned. 'Does she mean the god of the elves and the world tree? Is that why the Arcains don't have boys or need the world tree? Because of a curse?'
Arthur rubbed his temples. "Sister-in-law or should I call you Ancestor? I need the sword that's beside you."
The demonic dragon looked to her side and noticed a white blade made of ice, then looked back at Arthur. "Okay."
"Huh? Just like that?"
She nodded, placing a claw beneath her chin. "It's not like I can use it now that I'm dead, so there isn't much reason to keep it. Plus, because of it and this stupid curse I can't pass on."
Arthur paused for a moment, then asked:
"Is there any way I can help? But in exchange, I get the sword and your demonic dragon core."
The white dragon stared at him, then nodded without hesitation. "Okay. You just need to help me break the curse that stupid elf put on me and my descendants. Though I suppose it has weakened since you were able to be born."
The conversation was going too smoothly. Suspiciously so.
Wasn't there supposed to be a death trial? Or some deadly duel with a corpse?
However, it seemed Nathira's sister was set on giving him everything.
After going over the curse which stated that no man not of her bloodline would be able to make her lineage conceive, and that only the world tree she was bonded to could keep her race alive.
It also warned that if the original world tree was destroyed, so would hers.
Arthur understood every word she spoke and agreed to them all.
"Okay, with that out of the way, I'll transfer my core to you." She glanced at Arthur and Alicia for a brief moment.
"Arthur Arcain, right? I feel like you're cheating me in this deal."
Arthur raised a brow. "How so?"
She continued, "It isn't that hard for you to break the curse. All you need to do is sleep with a direct descendant and when they conceive, the curse will be broken. You could even give your mom over there another child."
Arthur nearly choked while Alicia struggled to contain her blush.
The demonic dragon smirked. "But I'll give you this for free, since you're my brother-in-law."
She slowly leaned in and touched the scales on her forehead to Arthur's, as a sharp golden light shone from the point of contact.
The golden light turned blue, then swirled around the room like a beautiful river of blue and gold. Then, the blue split into ice, water, and darkness, while the gold became thunder, fire, and light.
Arthur's ancestor began speaking, her voice echoing inside his mind like she was right there in his head.
"As you may already know, dragons control the power over time while phoenixes over space. But when the head of the phoenix race died, he spread his feathers and energy across the world and handed me his inheritance."
Arthur felt a sudden surge of heat rush through him.
"We, the demonic dragons, are the strongest race with the growth potential of demons, the strength and dominance of dragons, and the beauty and unmatched prowess of the phoenix."
The demonic dragon began to fade as Arthur hovered in the air, his forehead marked by a faint symbol and glowing runes forming across his skin.
"With all this, I, Echidna Val Arcain, the mother of all demonic humans, formed the Sea of Time and the six elements of my race. From today, I give this inheritance to you Arthur Val Arcain my only male descendant who broke my timeless curse."
With that, Arthur's body began to transform as impurities were forced from his pores, every bone realigning itself, and a curved white horn streaked with gold appearing on the side of his head.
"Now go into the world, little one, and make my bloodline the greatest."
White dragon wings unfolded from his back wings striped with gold, as if the color had been added for flair.
Echidna whispered some final words in his ear as her presence vanished, leaving him suspended midair.
His heartbeat raced as scales formed over his body.
The sword that had rested on the ground flew into his hand, while Alicia erected a barrier to keep his awakening from being sensed by the outside world.
As the smoke from the sudden explosion cleared, a lone figure floated in the sky.
Scales as white as ice, golden eyes that shone with divine light, and flowing white hair that fell just above his shoulder.
Arthur swung the blade freely through the air, sending sharp currents of wind throughout the cave.
Not only Alicia but also Selena, Thyra, Amara, and every living demonic dragon felt it.
Even the dragons, demons, and those with incomplete phoenix inheritances sensed it too.
The birth of the first pure-blooded Demonic Dragon.
The true king of all divine races.
