Infinite Awakening: My Exp Doubles Everyday

Chapter 238: Broken World

Li Yao found herself standing in a familiar location. It was her childhood home, the place where she had grown up. Or at least, what remained of it. Looking at the widespread devastation around her, it seemed as though a major battle had occurred here—walls were cracked and crumbling, debris scattered everywhere, and the air around was filled with violent qi. She wondered why she was back here. Was she dreaming? She hadn't dreamt of this place in a long time.

She walked slowly toward the front door. The door itself had taken quite severe damage and was almost completely nonexistent, hanging by a single broken hinge. She pushed it open, the wood creaking ominously as she walked in.

Once she stepped inside, she immediately heard the sound of crying—soft, heartbroken sobs. "A child?" she wondered aloud.

She started walking cautiously toward the direction of the voice, navigating around fallen beams and scattered furniture. As she moved through the familiar hallways, something fell from above and struck her head. She reached up instinctively and retrieved the object—it was a bloodied portrait, torn and stained, but she could still make out the figure depicted within.

"Grandpa?" she spoke.

Suddenly, a thunderous explosion shook the entire building, the violent tremor running through the walls and floor. She lost her balance completely and fell hard to the ground, her hands scraping against the rough debris. "What was that?" she wondered as she struggled to rise from her prone position.

As she pushed herself up, her expression changed dramatically when she noticed that the entire house had somehow burst into flames while she wasn't looking.

As she stood there wondering what to do, she heard the voice of the crying child again, more urgent now. "Oh no, the child!" she thought in panic as she quickly started running. Without hesitation, she pushed against the burning door and entered the room that was rapidly being consumed by the spreading flames.

Inside the smoke-filled chamber, she found the source of the crying. It was a small child, but as she looked closer, she recognized the child—it was herself when she was younger.

She approached slowly, her heart pounding. "Why are you crying?" she asked gently as she moved closer to the frightened child. "You should get out of here—the whole place is coming down," she said as she continued to approach.

But when she finally reached where the baby sat, she noticed other figures lying motionless next to the child. Her expression froze completely as she recognized them. "Mom? Dad?" She clutched her head as memories she had somehow forgotten came flooding back. "These memories... how could I have forgotten? I have to get revenge for Mom and Dad..."

As she was speaking, her voice growing more intense with each word, she suddenly sensed movement behind her. Turning quickly, she caught sight of a shadow disappearing into the corridor beyond. "You there, stop!" she shouted as she gave chase.

But the moment she turned the corner into the corridor, everything around her had changed completely. She found herself floating high above what appeared to be an entirely different battlefield, suspended in air above a scene of carnage and destruction.

She looked down with confusion. "Where is this place?" Then she noticed movement far below and descended rapidly.

It was an old-looking man, and he appeared to be severely injured. There was a long, dark blood trail behind him showing exactly how far he had crawled across the battlefield. The man then turned with obvious effort and leaned his broken body against a large rock, breathing heavily.

Li Yao recognized the man immediately. "Grandpa?" she said with shock as she quickly appeared next to him. "What happened to you?" she asked with deep concern as she reached out toward him, only for her hands to pass straight through his form as if he were nothing more than a ghost.

She stared at her translucent hands in bewilderment, wondering what was happening to her.

She then heard a giggling sound from somewhere behind her. She whipped around to look, and this time found herself standing in yet another battlefield, this one even more horrific than the last.

She flew down urgently and noticed someone who had a sword piercing completely through his chest, impaling him against a stone wall. "Senior brother?" she spoke in a panicked voice, rushing toward the figure.

She tried grabbing the sword to pull him free, but her hands passed through the weapon without making contact. "Yao Yao," Xiang Yu spoke in a low, fading voice.

"Senior brother, I'm here! I'll get you out, just wait a moment," she said frantically as she reached for her own sword, slashing desperately at the wall. But everything went straight through without making the slightest impact.

She searched through her spatial ring in desperation, trying item after item, but nothing seemed able to make contact with this strange world.

"I'm sorry. I can't marry you in this lifetime," Xiang Yu said with his final breath.

"Senior brother? Senior brother?" she called out desperately, but he was no longer alive.

She dropped to the ground on her knees. What was happening? What was this strange, nightmarish world?

"What are you waiting for? Nothing in this world matters. You need to let out your true self," whispers started entering her ears from all directions.

"You are still too weak. Look, you lost something once again"

"Do you regret it? If only you were stronger, if only you were faster, if only you were smarter…"

Suddenly, she rose from her position, her expression becoming completely emotionless. She reached toward the sword that had killed Xiang Yu, and this time, she made solid contact. She pulled out the weapon in one fluid, decisive motion.

She then gently lifted Xiang Yu's lifeless form, carefully leaning him against the wall and tenderly closing his eyes with her fingertips.

"This world is broken," she began. "I will fix it."

Instantly, tremendous power surged around her like a raging storm. Her skin started cracking ominously, revealing a brilliant red energy pulsing within her.
