Chapter 5 - Rumors About the Instructor
I ignored Zhou instructor’s kind suggestion to tour Guangzhou and immediately returned to Korea by boat. I’m not sure if ‘returned’ is the right expression. After all, since I was 18, my home has almost always been in the United States. But the organization said that once I’ve shown myself to the world, the Bureau of Investigation and Statistics would start tracking Shin Eun-young, and they were concerned that if I, who had no particular connection to the United States, were to enter and leave the U.S. in any way, it would start to raise suspicions.
In my opinion, this concern was valid. I was ordered to settle in Seoul until September, before entering the boarding school, and live quietly without drawing attention. Of course, while occasionally meeting with Marilyn Jefferson, the operations officer for this mission.
In my secret meeting with Jefferson, I first asked about Second Lieutenant Catherine Duey. Agent Jefferson thought for a moment after hearing my question, then nodded with a slight laugh.
“Ah, you mean that Republic officer.”
“She was a sharp woman. I was just standing there, but she came up to me and said strange things like she could feel a soldier’s aura from me. I hadn’t heard in advance that such a person would be enrolling this time.”
“Well, Eun-young, you do have a slightly stiff demeanor.”
“What? Really?”
“You’ve adapted too rigidly to the organization, I should say. We’re not that kind of group, are we? We’re an organization that needs to know how to move very flexibly. It’s not that you lack ability, but you have some ingrained habits. When you become a superhuman, you become sensitive to reading such things. From what you’re saying, it seems Lieutenant Duey was particularly sensitive, but you should be more careful from now on.”
“What is her ability?”
“Catherine Duey? I heard she’s a fire-type ability user. A rare natural awakened one.”
“Fire-type, is it.”
“Yes, fire-type. Should be quite powerful. Especially in war. Personally, I’m surprised that France sent her to China instead of Africa.”
“If they sent a fire-type ability user to suppress colonies and burn them down, even France wouldn’t be able to maintain their regime.”
“The French still think of Algeria as their mainland territory.”
“Japan also tried to make Korea their mainland territory. Putting aside how well they treated it.”
Jefferson didn’t seem to want to talk more about this topic. She didn’t seem very interested in a mere second lieutenant.
“Anyway, the reason we didn’t tell you about such minor foreign students was for your sake. Although you confidently proclaimed it, Eun-young, you seemed to be struggling quite a bit just to adapt to this new name, Shin Eun-young. I was hesitant to give you too much information at once. But it seems you’re gradually adapting to that name and appearance, so from now on, feel free to ask about anything you’re curious about when we meet. The organization will pass on as much information as we can find out to you.”
“Adapting to this face…”
It’s scary that her words are true. This face that looks similar yet completely different from my original face.
Honestly, for several days after taking the drug, I would startle every time I washed my face and looked in the mirror. The bare face that had completely changed was entirely different from the disguises I used to wear during regular missions.
The dark, quivering eyes and the slightly pale complexion aren’t much different from before the change, but the nose bridge that seems to have become slightly more prominent as the facial flesh receded, the jawline that has become sharply pointed, perhaps because the bones have shrunk and changed shape. Looking at the face where masculine ruggedness has disappeared and only feminine curves remain, a subtle self-love wells up and then subsides again.
Sometimes I feel like my gaze is too intense, so I try to force myself to regain a normal look, but I just reconfirm that it’s not easy for a human to control their own gaze.
“About that National Revolutionary Army instructor…”
“You mean Major Zhou Lizhi. How was she when you met her?”
“She was a rigid woman. Anyone could see she had strong party loyalty.”
“A woman working for the Blue Shirts Society can’t have weak party loyalty.”
“Are you certain she’s an agent of the Blue Shirts Society?”
The Blue Shirts Society. China’s formidable secret organization known to have been established by the Bureau of Investigation and Statistics after China’s unification. While the Bureau itself is quite a fearsome organization, the Blue Shirts Society is China’s most veiled special organization that gathers only the most capable superhumans within the intelligence agency and mobilizes them for various operations.
Not all superhumans belonging to the Bureau are necessarily members of the Blue Shirts Society, and we can’t conclude that someone isn’t a member just because they’re not a superhuman. This is because sometimes the Chinese government secretly recruits superhumans and instructs them to thoroughly hide their superhuman identity and act as operatives.
“There are various stories. But yes. Being the first-year foreign student instructor at Huangpu is a job that comes with tremendous stress. If I, Marilyn, say it’s tremendous, can you roughly guess what level that is?”
“Hmm…”
“It’s tremendous, what Zhou Lizhi has to do. She’s essentially a shepherd supervising a group of the world’s strongest heroes who are suspected of being spies. Even for a superhuman with ‘Weapon Master’ ability, it’s not a job that just anyone can take on. Yes, not unless they have strong loyalty to the party, enough to be active in the Blue Shirts Society.”
“I heard a suspicious story. From that woman, Lieutenant Duey.”
“What did she say?”
“She seemed about to say that Zhou Lizhi was a terrible pervert, but our conversation was interrupted midway.”
“Hmm… I see. Yes, there is such a rumor. I’ve heard it too, and was actually about to ask you to look into it.”
“That rumor… what exactly is it?”
“A rumor that Zhou Lizhi gets the driving force to endure that harsh instructor job not from loyalty to the Kuomintang, but from somewhere else.”
“I’m sorry. I don’t quite understand.”
“To put it simply, it’s this. They say she selects female students she likes among the foreign students who aren’t from high-status backgrounds and calls them to her room. Using her absolute power within the school, where she’s solely responsible for monitoring and grading all the foreign students.”
“Ha.”
I couldn’t help but laugh as soon as I heard this. Not because it was absurd, but because it strangely felt plausible.
“Really?”
“The foreign student special class at Zhonghuamen has five instructors in charge. But at Huangpu, there’s only one. Despite the workload in Guangzhou being no less than in Beiping. Is this just the difference between a boys’ school and a girls’ school? No. Zhou Lizhi herself is requesting it. She says that as a loyal officer of the national army, she’ll take care of everything herself, so no additional support is needed. No matter how strong her party loyalty is, is there a need to go that far?”
“She’s holding onto that position because she has a taste for picking out female students she likes?”
“It’s seriously suspicious.”
If it were just a conspiracy theory spoken by ordinary people, it might be one thing, but if both the French Army and CIA are saying this, there must be some basis.
Wait a minute.
She calls foreign students who aren’t from very high backgrounds to her room?
“Ah… Could it be…”
“An ordinary Korean female college student. What do you think, agent?”
“It fits perfectly. Both the nationality and the status. If that rumor is true.”
“The second-year student Chen Yayuan, whom you’re supposed to monitor. If we assume she’s an anti-American operative, there’s a possibility that the party intelligence agency is the one giving her orders or instructions. The most likely contact person is Zhou Lizhi, the foreign student instructor.”
“That makes sense.”
“If Zhou Lizhi is a power-abusing sex offender with homosexual tendencies as the rumors say, she’ll definitely approach you. It’s a bit awkward to say this, but the drug worked quite well. If the original was moderately decent, then now, Eun-young, you’re objectively quite beautiful.”
“I guess I can be a bit proud to receive such an evaluation from Agent Jefferson.”
“It’s true. Especially for a woman like Zhou, you have just the kind of face she’d want to target. With that slightly haggard face and awkward, trembling gestures.”
“I hope you’re not trying to commit a power-abusing sex crime against me right now, Agent.”
“Puhah! No way! I’m not interested in that kind of thing! Well, not exactly uninterested? More accurately, I should say I don’t have such thoughts right now? Besides, no matter how much I set my mind to it, could I possibly beat you, a superhuman?”
“That’s why I said ‘power-abusing.'”
“The point is this. Think of it as part of the mission. Zhou Lizhi’s face, it was quite good-looking, wasn’t it? You shouldn’t have any particular aversion, right? You were once a man too. You shouldn’t have any aversion to embracing a woman of that level.”
“For missions, I’ve seduced many women much worse than her.”
I answered.
“Are you instructing me not to refuse if she approaches?”
“And extract whatever information you can.”
“I understand completely.”
So she’s telling me to seduce a female instructor suspected of belonging to the Chinese intelligence agency.
With a woman’s body, no less.
This might be a bit fun.
