Chapter 0 - Prologue
In Zhonghuamen Square of Beiping, once the millennial capital of the empire, hangs a portrait of Chiang Kai-shek, the Generalissimo of the Republic of China.
I’m not sure exactly when his face began to hang there. Here where I stand now, the Forbidden City of China is one of the country’s greatest historical sites, overwhelming not only foreign tourists but even its own people. It’s surprising to think that such a massive imperial palace has been without an owner since Feng Yuxiang drove out the last Qing emperor from this palace. If I were the Generalissimo, called China’s Immortal Emperor, I’d want to occupy this palace rather than Nanjing. This city, which was called Beijing until the Beiyang government era, is undoubtedly still one of the most important cities in China.
It’s strange. Like a figure vanished into history, the fact that the man boldly hanging on the gate of the Forbidden City is still alive and still the president of this country. When did he start ruling all of China? 1928? That’s probably right. Because it’s also an unforgettable year if you’ve studied Korean history. Right now, Beiping is buzzing with excitement, celebrating the upcoming 100th birthday of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, which is still more than three months away. I can’t even imagine what the atmosphere must be like in Nanjing, where the Presidential Office is located.
I passed through the crowded Zhonghuamen Square and headed towards the Beiping City Station to the west. Although I hadn’t reserved a ticket in advance, with the superhuman qualification certificate provided by the Americans, I should be able to secure a good seat. This country has a tradition of favoring young students heading to Guangzhou. Even if it’s a foreigner like me.
Actually, I thought Beiping would be my final destination. The largest superhuman training school in China is here in Beiping. It’s a historic boys’ school established during the Northeast Offensive in 1928. Logically speaking, if I had to attend a Chinese superhuman school, it would make sense to end my journey here in Beiping.
But no. I’m going all the way to Guangzhou in the far south. I have to take a train to the end of the continent to enroll in the girls’ school in Huangpu, which has an even longer history than the hero school here in Beiping.
My name is Yoon Jae-won. I’m a Korean working for the CIA, ordered to infiltrate the most intimate parts of the Republic of China to uncover China’s terrifying secret, which is only rumored among intelligence agencies.
But now, it’s better to introduce myself like this. Above all else, for a spy, thorough self-hypnosis and immersion for perfect acting is essential.
My name is Shin Eun-young. I am a Korean-born prospective student of the women’s hero school, ordered by the CIA to infiltrate the Republic of China’s superhuman training school.
