Chapter 43: Chapter 43: Wonderful, I’m Beginning to Understand Everything!

Terran calendar, October 9th — the 282nd day of the year.

Zhou Yun stood outside Nama Karl's home, wearing his psychic cap. He focused his eyes, and the world before him gradually became transparent.

Through the walls, he could clearly see the inside of Nama Karl's house.

No one. At least through his sight, there was indeed no one present.

But there were too many ways to fool the eyes — what he saw wasn't always reliable.

Zhou Yun closed his eyes, rubbing his brow to ease the slight fatigue rising in him. Scanning the whole house consumed quite a bit of energy. Of his three psychic abilities, he was least skilled at clairvoyance.

"See anything?" Rena stood at his side, asking.

"On the second floor. Left side study. There's a safe."

Zhou Yun opened his eyes and looked at Rena.

"The star route record we're after should be in there."

As he spoke, Zhou Yun took an Anywhere Ring from his pocket and pressed it against the wall. A tunnel opened straight into Nama Karl's home.

"These strange little gadgets of yours — where do you even get them?" Rena asked in surprise.

Zhou Yun shot her a look, a sly smile on his lips. "Didn't you claim you were blessed by the Emperor?"

"I didn't claim — I am!" Rena glared at him, her tone firm.

"Well, then. What a coincidence — I'm blessed by the Omnissiah," Zhou Yun joked.

"Liar. You've got way too much flesh on you to be Mechanicus," Rena retorted.

The two of them slipped into Nama Karl's house through the tunnel.

By the faint glow of the street lamps outside, they could just make out the house, cloaked in darkness. It was a standard two-story upper-hive apartment: living room below, two bedrooms above.

Nama Karl had converted one of the bedrooms into a study — that was where the thing they sought lay.

The first-floor living room was neat and orderly, nothing unusual at first glance.

But against one wall were several small desks, each neatly laid out with papers and pens.

Zhou Yun walked over to those desks, flipping open one of the notebooks.

It was full of dense mathematical formulas. Unlike Nama Karl's personal notebook, though, these were relatively simple — the hardest only went as far as definite integrals, nothing more than basic university-level calculus.

Zhou Yun, as a long-expired university graduate, could still barely understand it.

"This is where Mrs. Nama used to teach math to the neighborhood kids," Rena peeked over his shoulder, her expression nostalgic.

Neighborhood kids… Zhou Yun recalled how he'd seen those children coming to learn over the past two days of watching Nama Karl. The oldest was no more than eleven or twelve, and they were already learning calculus? Nama Karl's teaching skills were a bit too impressive.

Zhou Yun flipped through more notebooks. Even though some were less advanced, they were all well beyond what children of that age should be learning — especially for upper-hive kids. Did they really need to study so deeply?

Zhou Yun frowned, sensing something strange. He opened all the notebooks, searching through them.

387, 420, 489.

He spotted those numbers written in each of the notebooks, by different children, in different handwriting and places.

Something in his mind began to stir, a faint sense of realization taking shape.

"Zhou Yun?" Rena tapped his shoulder, breaking his thoughts.

"Did you find something?" she asked.

Zhou Yun glanced at the numbers in the notebook and shook his head.

Just a vague feeling in his mind.

They climbed the stairs to the second floor, carefully checking around before entering the study.

The study was messier than the rest of the house. Papers covered in complex formulas littered the floor and desk.

On the desk was a small safe — smaller even than the Anywhere Ring, so Zhou Yun couldn't use it to retrieve anything inside.

Fortunately, it was just an ordinary safe — nothing hard to crack.

Zhou Yun looked at Rena.

She stepped forward, stretching out a finger toward the safe.

The air grew cold around them — the telltale sign of a psyker channeling their power.

Rena took a deep breath, softly speaking a single word to focus herself:

"Rai!" (Thunder!)

ZAP!

A bolt of lightning shot out, melting through the metal shell of the safe, revealing the star route record inside.

Watching her handiwork, Zhou Yun thought of the methods used on Black Ships to suppress psykers: gag them.

Most untrained psykers needed their voice to channel. Clearly, Rena was one of them.

Zhou Yun mused — if he ever fell out with her, he could just gag her and she'd be helpless.

Unaware of his thoughts, Rena happily flipped through the book.

"A star route record from over ten thousand years ago! This is it!"

She tucked the book into her pocket, delighted.

"That was… almost too easy," Zhou Yun muttered.

Too easy — it made him feel even more uneasy.

"You're so… cautious," Rena shook her head.

"Didn't we already confirm? Mrs. Nama's only flaw is she doesn't pray enough."

They walked out of the study.

"She still goes to church every few days to pray. If she were really corrupted, why would she pray before the Ecclesiarch priests at all?" Rena reasoned.

Zhou Yun nodded lightly.

Indeed… wait. Every few days to pray?

Zhou Yun froze.

The dossier from Augustus Flax said Nama Karl last prayed seven days ago.

And now it had been two more days — meaning her last prayer was nine days ago.

In four years, she'd prayed 153 times.

Today was day 282 of the year. Adding up the previous three years… that meant she had prayed 153 times over 1,377 days — once every nine days.

Zhou Yun stood still, feeling his mind accelerate, the number nine becoming ever clearer in his head.

6,561 blood coins — 9 to the fourth power. That was her donation to the church — a string of numbers representing Tzeentch.

That meant… even in that church of the Emperor, part of it belonged to Tzeentch!

Zhou Yun's eyes lit up with sudden clarity.

So that's it! He was finally starting to understand everything!

It was so simple — that nine-digit number, 387,420,489, was 9 to the ninth power — the ultimate number of the Changer of Ways!

Praise the Changer of Ways!
