Chapter 228: Chapter 227
The power and destruction caused by Morin, underpinned by his own formidable Nen abilities, was indeed impressive! In fact, it might have even surpassed expectations.
At the same moment when the shockwaves were bursting forth, Gon, Killua, and the others immediately retreated in the opposite direction to avoid the impact. The prisoners, too, scrambled back in a panic, desperately seeking cover.
The flying debris alone, sharp enough to end their lives, was terrifying, not to mention the powerful shockwaves that could easily blow them away.
After a considerable amount of time passed, the shockwaves and dust finally began to dissipate, revealing the state of the arena.
"Is it over?!" Leorio and the others, who had narrowly escaped the ordeal, reappeared at the edge of the cliff. They peered over cautiously and saw~
On the arena, only Morin's figure remained. The bizarre-looking opponent, however, had vanished. It was unclear whether he had been blown off the cliff by the shockwave or crushed to oblivion by Morin's punch, leaving not a trace behind. Well, the former seemed more likely.
Of course, that wasn't the main point. The important thing was...
The arena seemed to have sunk by about two meters compared to its previous state. Morin had forcefully scraped away about two meters of ground with his punch!!
"Incredible!!!" Leorio, Gon, and the others were left utterly dumbfounded by this realization. They had known Morin was strong, but they hadn't expected him to be this powerful.
"So, does this mean we've passed?"
Morin first glanced at the opposite cliff, now devoid of prisoners, who had fled in terror. He then looked up at the broadcasting tube at the top of the room.
"You have... passed." After a while, the room echoed with Lippo's indescribable tone. The stone bridge connecting the cliff and the arena slowly rose, forming a passage for Gon and the others to cross.
Thus, the five-on-five battle between the examinees and the prisoners came to an end. In the main control room of the building:
"Phew!" In the trembling, fearful gaze of the two guards, Lippo downed a bottle of soda in one go, then fell into a momentary silence. After a long pause~
"Thank goodness." He echoed the sentiment of the prisoner, Bendot. "Thank goodness this round of testing only required the examinees to clear the challenge, without the examiners having to step in. Otherwise..."
Lippo glanced at the screen, at the room where the examiner had met a grim fate at the hands of Hisoka, and his relief deepened.
On the path of the Majority Rule:
"Morin, how did you manage to unleash such devastating power with a single punch?!" As they continued forward, Gon looked up with his bright, sparkling eyes, filled with unabashed admiration.
"Once you become a Hunter and train a bit, you'll be able to do this too," Morin offered a vague answer.
"Become a Hunter?!" Gon nodded vigorously, "I definitely will!!" Then, he asked curiously:
"But Morin, you're so amazing, why did you only decide to take the Hunter Exam now?"
"And, I saw you have a good relationship with Chairman Netero. Did you know each other before?"
Gon, like a curious child, kept asking questions non-stop.
"Yes, when my apprentice became one of the Zodiac Twelve, I was there to witness it, and that's when I met Chairman Netero."
"I took the Hunter Exam twelve years ago. In between, I didn't find it particularly useful, so I put it off. This year, I just felt like it."
Morin answered patiently, though not in exhaustive detail.
"Morin, do you know much about the Phantom Troupe?" Kurapika suddenly asked.
"You're talking about one of the Phantom Troupe members, Uvogin, right?"
---
"Hmm?" Morin responded nonchalantly without turning his head, "Back then, Uvogin and another member, Nobunaga, were the floor masters at Heaven's Arena for a while."
"That incident was quite the talk of the town back then. You can easily find out more about it if you ask around."
"Indeed," Killua said, recalling the details. "When I visited Heaven's Arena a few years ago, I heard about it too. It apparently caused quite a stir at the time."
"Heaven's Arena, Uvogin, Nobunaga..." Kurapika silently committed these names and locations to memory. He didn't suspect any connection between Morin and the Phantom Troupe. It was evident from the people Morin associated with.
His apprentice, Kasrto, was the Monkey of the Hunter Association's Zodiac Twelve, a definite high-ranking official.
His acquaintance, Netero, was the Chairman of the Hunter Association and the world's strongest man. No one could link Morin with the Phantom Troupe, nor was there any concept of them being connected.
This world truly is full of wonders...
After the five-on-five match, the group soon arrived at a fork in the road. There were stairs leading up and a slope going down. Then, with the guidance of the "Guiding Angel," they found the correct path.
Along the way, they encountered many challenges, such as "Guess the Current," "Circle and Cross Maze," "Dice Minefield," and so on... Each time, they made the right choice and easily overcame the dangers.
Eventually, the group reached the final fork in the road. The five of them entered a dimly lit room with flickering candlelight, giving off a rather eerie vibe. The room had two iron doors and various weapons hanging on the walls, all quite conspicuous.
In front of them were two iron doors painted with circles and crosses. As they examined the room's environment, Lippo's voice came through the central monitor once again.
After an explanation, they turned their attention to the two doors. Each door led to a different path. The path marked with circles was difficult and long, allowing all five to pass but taking at least forty-five hours.
The path marked with crosses was simple and easy, requiring only about three minutes to traverse.
However, choosing this simple path meant that two of them had to be handcuffed to the wall, and the door would only open once that was done. Those two would remain handcuffed until time ran out.
"We still have over sixty hours left, which is enough for us to pass, so shouldn't we choose the long path?" Gon suggested after some thought.
"I agree!" Leorio was the first to raise his hand in agreement.
"I don't mind," Killua said indifferently.
"I have no objections," Kurapika added, bringing smiles to Leorio and Gon's faces.
"However, there's no need to make it so complicated," Morin stepped forward towards the doors.
"I've always wondered, on this Majority Rule path, if five members with varying strengths were to attempt it, and one member happened to die along the way, could the remaining four continue?"
"No," Lippo's voice came through the broadcast. "This is the path of the five-member decision. Once the ring is on your hand, a person is locked in.
If someone dies along the way, the challenge fails. This test examines the cooperation and unity of the examinees, requiring them to support each other in the face of difficulties," Lippo explained dutifully.
"Of course..."
"In the event of a team member's death, if you are willing to carry a corpse through the challenge, it's not entirely impossible to proceed," Lippo added.
"Just as I thought," Morin mused, confirming his suspicions.
"Well then—this choice game ends here." Morin shook his wrist again.
"Gon, do you remember how to pass the Quick Answer Granny's challenge?" he asked.
"The way to pass..." Gon paused, then quickly recalled, "It was to remain silent and not answer."
"Exactly. Which means when faced with choices, you don't have to make one at all." Morin walked up to the doors. "Choices are just a means to bind you when you lack strength, forcing you to accept only these two paths. But if you are strong enough, you don't need to choose at all!!"
With that, he swung his fist!
