Chapter 58: Ren in the Clinic
Since the injured villagers were in urgent need of care, Kocho Shinobu didn't wait long.
She personally went to help Ren gather the medicinal herbs he mentioned. Kanzaki Aoi assisted alongside her, and with the cooperation of the three, Ren successfully treated the wounded man.
Feeling his thigh gradually regaining sensation, the villager's eyes widened in disbelief.
"It's moving! It's moving! My leg can move!"
"Oh, thank you so much, sir!"
"My cousin's leg is really healed—what a miracle doctor!"
The patient's brother gripped Ren's hands in gratitude, tears brimming in his eyes.
Ren patted the man on the shoulder reassuringly. "It's fine. Next!"
A stretcher was quickly brought in front of Ren.
"What's wrong with you?" Ren asked absentmindedly, not even glancing up.
The person on the stretcher weakly responded, "I'm sorry… I'm so weak."
"Huh?" Ren looked up sharply, his eyes landing on the patient.
It was none other than Inosuke, lying obediently on the stretcher in a completely uncharacteristic manner.
Ren suppressed a laugh as he inspected Inosuke's injuries. Judging by the visible fractures on his chest and back, it was clear he had suffered greatly.
Ren stroked his chin thoughtfully, quickly coming to a conclusion: the physical injuries were treatable, but the emotional damage from being bullied by Flame Hashira and Wind Hashira might take more time.
Ren wasted no time, skillfully resetting Inosuke's bones and bandaging him up. He even tied a neat bow on the bandage around Inosuke's chest.
Inosuke stared at him helplessly, still muttering, "I'm sorry… I'm so weak."
"Next!" Ren called out, ignoring him.
The sun gradually began to set, casting a warm orange hue over the Butterfly Mansion.
Ren worked tirelessly, treating patient after patient, with Shinobu and Kanzaki Aoi assisting him. Kanao silently tallied points at the door.
[You healed another person, and your medical skills have improved.]
[This is the 99th patient you've treated. Practice makes perfect. You've gained insight into medicine and learned Intermediate Medical Skills – Perception of the Heart.]
[This is the 149th patient you've treated. Your understanding has deepened, and your medical skills have reached the master level!]
Ren was so immersed in treating patients that his progress became rapid. His diagnoses were flawless, and his speed only improved. He even managed to tie decorative butterfly-shaped bows on the bandages for fun.
"These bows are a souvenir of your visit to the Butterfly Mansion," Ren explained to the patients.
When Shinobu heard this, her cheeks flushed red, especially when the bows were compared to her butterfly-shaped hairpin.
The village women and aunts, however, were delighted.
"Oh, this little butterfly is so cute!"
"Right? This young man isn't just a master doctor—he's an artist!"
"Little girl," one aunt whispered to Shinobu, "you should act quickly. This young man has been sneaking glances at the back of your head. He must like you!"
"Exactly! If I were thirty years younger, I wouldn't give you a chance!"
Overwhelmed by the teasing, Shinobu's face burned bright red. She fled the scene in embarrassment, leaving the aunts chuckling behind her.
About a quarter of an hour later, Ren had treated every patient in the Butterfly Mansion—except for the pediatric department.
Some had come for his exceptional skills. Others came for the free bow decorations. A few were simply there for the rumored scandal between Ren and Kocho Shinobu.
Hearing the gossip, even members of the Demon Slayer Corps came to investigate. However, Shinobu quickly posted a notice prohibiting entry to non-villagers.
By the time the last patient was treated, Kanzaki Aoi and other members of the Demon Slayer Corps began escorting the villagers back down the mountain.
The second round of the rescue challenge officially ended.
Ren finally stood up, stretching, just as Shinobu re-entered the room. She avoided meeting his eyes and instead checked the points Kanao had tallied.
Ren: 198 points.
As Shinobu had suspected, Ren's medical skills were outstanding, and his efficiency was unmatched. Even she was impressed.
"There's no need for a third round," Shinobu thought. "The winner is already decided."
She glanced at the pediatric department, where Sanemi and Rengoku were still bustling about.
Sanemi Shinazugawa: 18 points.
Kyojuro Rengoku: 17 points.
Both had doubled their previous scores, but they were far behind Ren.
