Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Clash of Crystal King

The ground still trembled from the last wave of enemies, shattered remains of Crystal Shards and broken stalkers littering the shimmering terrain. Riven stood with his breathing heavy, the edge of Nullshift's blade humming low and faint.

The blaster form had drained more energy than he expected—after only five shots, the weapon had reverted, almost refusing to activate again.

He gritted his teeth and kept his grip firm. He had no choice but to rely on the sword form now.

Across the crystalline chamber, the dungeon boss—a towering, jagged monstrosity of living crystal—lurched from its perch atop the fractured pedestal. Its limbs flexed with mechanical weight, and cyan energy pulsed violently in the cracks along its body. Where lesser enemies had moved like beasts, this one moved like a war machine—calculated, relentless.

Lyra stood a few paces to his left, her hand glowing with frost, a trail of icy mist swirling beneath her feet. Her coat was torn at the hem, strands of hair clinging to her cheek with sweat. But her eyes were sharp—focused.

"No more distractions," she murmured. "It's just us and that thing now."

"Great," Riven muttered. "I was hoping we'd get the deluxe package."

The boss raised one arm. Crystalline spires tore from the ground around it like spears, rearranging the battlefield in an instant. The dome-shaped arena shimmered red with unstable mana, cracks still spreading like veins across the walls. The atmosphere was oppressive—like gravity itself was thicker here.

Then it moved.

In one explosive charge, the boss dashed forward, each step slamming into the floor with a thunderous quake. Riven barely ducked the first swipe of its arm, the sheer force of the wind behind it making him stagger. He countered with a slash—Nullshift's sword form sparking off the armor. Again, no damage.

"It's like trying to chip a mountain," he growled.

Lyra didn't wait. She lifted her arm and sent out a wave of concentrated frost. It swept across the floor, coating the boss's lower half in solid ice. For a brief second, the giant slowed.

"Now!" she shouted.

Riven darted in and aimed for the same crack they'd exposed earlier—center of its torso, a small weak point barely visible through the glowing lattice. He drove the blade forward—

And was knocked away mid-strike. A jagged arm had moved faster than he could register, slamming into his side and launching him across the chamber.

He hit the ground hard, the impact rattling through his ribs.

"Riven!" Lyra yelled, casting a shield of frost between him and the boss's follow-up attack.

"I'm fine," he gasped, pushing up to one knee. "Still hate this place."

He rolled aside just as the boss shattered her shield and advanced again.

Lyra unleashed a barrage of ice projectiles. Some splintered harmlessly against its armor—others managed to lodge in its joints, slowing its advance.

"Use the environment!" she called. "It's reactive. Try the shards!"

Riven glanced around. The arena was still dotted with floating and embedded crystal shards—leftovers from the earlier collapse.

He sprinted toward a tall jagged one and used it as a springboard. With one leap, he vaulted into the air and brought the sword down overhead.

This time, his blade bit deeper—right into the cracked shoulder. Sparks flew, and a hiss escaped the boss as if it recognized the threat now. It retaliated by slamming its foot down, sending out a shockwave.

Riven landed hard, tumbling into a crouch. Lyra responded with a quick glyph etched in midair—an ice wall erupted in front of her, absorbing the blast.

But the boss wasn't slowing.

It raised both arms and let out a guttural, grinding screech—then launched a volley of crystal spikes from its back, hundreds of them screaming through the air in a circular arc.

"Move!" Lyra shouted, darting between shards as they rained down.

Riven didn't need to be told twice. He sprinted through the barrage, barely weaving between deadly spears. One clipped his shoulder, tearing his cloak and leaving a stinging burn behind.

In the chaos, Lyra formed two pillars of frost beneath her boots, launching herself into the air. She landed on a floating shard and conjured a lance of ice, throwing it with pinpoint precision toward the boss's torso.

Crack.

The ice lance struck true—embedding deep. The boss staggered.

"That's your shot!" she shouted.

Riven pushed forward with everything he had left. Nullshift's core pulsed faintly, its energy nearly spent—but he ignored it. Every step rang with urgency. As the boss pulled the ice lance free with one arm, it left the chest weak spot exposed.

Riven slid beneath its swing and leapt upward, blade aimed at the heart.

The sword plunged into the fracture.

A blinding pulse of energy exploded outward. The boss let out a deafening cry as cyan light poured from its wounds. Cracks ran wild across its armor.

But it didn't fall.

Instead—it twisted violently, grabbing Riven mid-air and slamming him into the floor.

He gasped, the wind knocked out of him.

"Riven!" Lyra was already moving.

The boss raised its clawed arm for a finishing blow.

And that's when Riven, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth, did the only thing he could—he jammed Nullshift's blade upward into the boss's forearm.

"Break," he growled.

With a shriek, the boss stumbled back. One arm shattered at the elbow.

It was weakening.

Lyra hit it next, sending another concentrated frost burst into the exposed chest. With one final push, the crystalline beast fell to one knee.

The chamber trembled.

The energy in the room began to destabilize.

Cracks spread not just across the boss—but across the air itself. As if reality inside this dungeon was beginning to tear.

Riven stood shakily, staring at the fractured heart of the dungeon core still pulsing beneath the boss's chest. Something… was inside.

But that moment wouldn't come yet.

Because the boss—despite all their efforts—was still alive.

Its head tilted slowly toward them.

And it roared.

End of chapter.

Thank you for reading.
