Chapter 9: The battle for the village
The night was about to become a battlefield, where the hope and courage of the forgotten would be put to the test, and every heart beat with the promise that even in the darkest moments, they would never be abandoned.
As the darkness deepened, the villagers and members of the Ebony Wings prepared to face the onslaught of the monsters. The air was thick with the promise of a night of fighting; the rain and the smell of wet earth mixed with the metallic scent of fear. The villagers, though frightened, now found refuge in the presence of the adventurers.
Haruto stood at the front, his eyes trained on the misty horizon. Daichi held his sword tightly, while Akira clenched his fists, feeling the vibration of the earth beneath his feet. Hana snapped her fingers, small sparks dancing around her hands. Kaito petted Hungry, the summoned ferret, who sniffed the air for signs of danger. Satsu, though nervous, remained by the group's side, determined to be useful.
The first roar cut through the night like a blade, making the villagers cower. Red eyes appeared in the darkness, reflecting the dim light of the torches scattered throughout the village. Grotesque goblins, with greenish skin and sharp teeth, advanced in hordes, brandishing crude weapons made of bones and rusty metal.
Haruto raised his voice with authority:
"Stand your ground! We protect this village today!"
The first group of goblins rushed towards the center of the village. Daichi was the first to react, his sword flashing as it cut through the air. With one sure blow, he cut down two goblins who were trying to flank him.
"You will not get past me!" he roared, his eyes shining with a mixture of fury and determination.
Akira stood beside him, his hands glowing with tellurian energy.
"Mountain Slash!" he shouted, conjuring blades of earth that rose from the ground, tearing apart the enemies that tried to approach.
Hana ran to a high position, her hands ablaze.
"Showtime! Dragon's Breath!" From her mouth, a blast of fire cut through the night, incinerating a group of goblins that tried to surround them.
Famine, under Kaito's command, became a swift shadow among the monsters, biting and tearing apart smaller goblins, creating gaps for the other adventurers to attack.
A few larger goblins caught Famine as he bit another goblin and tried to split him in half using their strength. That was when Kaito gestured:
- Collossus Outbreak!
Hungry immediately gained 5 times more power and increased in size, becoming a giant summon.
He began to strike, bite, and tear apart the goblins, as well as throwing them away. He pierced their bellies with piercing claws without any difficulty.
Kaito added, "Never underestimate the power of a summoner!" Nearby, Satsu, with trembling hands, activated the Shadow Step of his Black Cloak to move stealthily. He spotted a lone goblin and, summoning all the courage he had, struck with the Technomagic Gauntlets, unleashing Adaptive Impact in an insane sequence of punches. The monster staggered before falling dead. "I did it…" Satsu gasped in disbelief. Haruto rushed to support him. "Well done, Satsu! Keep your guard up." The group fought with coordination and bravery, but the goblins continued to appear in frightening numbers. A loud crash echoed through the village as one of the houses was broken into. The wooden door gave way with a loud crack, and a particularly grotesque goblin, with a mocking smile, entered the house where a mother and child were cowering in a corner.
He laughed mockingly, approaching slowly, his yellowed teeth shining in the dim light.
The mother hugged the child, her body trembling with fear. The goblin raised his improvised club, ready to attack.
Suddenly, a colossal shadow appeared behind the monster followed by a lightning bolt that cut through the sky as proof of its imposingness. Daichi Tanaka, with the posture of an unshakable mountain, held his sword firmly. His eyes shone with an ancient fury.
"Not this time," he said, his deep voice echoing like thunder.
In a quick and lethal movement, he cut off the goblin's head with a single blow. The creature's body fell limp, while blood dripped onto the floor.
Daichi looked at the mother and child, who were still trembling.
"You are safe now," he said, his voice cracking.
For a moment, flashes of his past invaded his mind: his own family, lost to monsters during a cruel invasion. The weight of that memory still pressed on his heart, but he had made an oath—to protect the innocent so that no one else would suffer the same suffering.
Meanwhile, the Ebony Wings continued their battle. Akira and Hana fought side by side, conjuring magic of earth and fire in a destructive spectacle that lit up the night. Kaito coordinated Famine with precision, while Satsu, although exhausted, remained alert, ready to help where needed.
Finally, when the first light of dawn dyed the sky golden, the fighting ceased. The goblins were completely decimated, and the village was safe.
The villagers, overcome with emotion, gathered around the adventurers, expressing their gratitude with tears in their eyes and sincere words.
"You saved our lives," the elder said, his voice trembling. "We will never forget what you did for us."
Haruto nodded, still panting.
"This is why we came. Now you can live in peace."
As the group recovered, Yumi finally woke up. Her eyes slowly opened, meeting Akira's relieved gaze.
"What… happened?" she asked, her voice weak.
"We won," Akira said with a smile. "Thanks to you too."
Yumi smiled softly, despite her exhaustion.
With their hearts warmed by victory and the gratitude of the villagers, the Ebony Wings prepared to return to the Brotherhood headquarters. The rising sun illuminated their battle-scarred faces, but also their renewed hope.
And so, united, they set off back to the brotherhood's headquarters.
