Imperial Japanese Space Force - I traveled back in time to 1901

Chapter 16: The Establishment of the Great Japanese Empire Space Force (Part 3)

Plan I: Development of Electronic Computers – Assigned to Lieutenant Morikawa

"Lieutenant Morikawa, some talented individuals who just graduated from Imperial University will be joining us soon. I want you to form a team with them and lead the development of electronic computers. There are a few... unusual ones in the mix, though."

Soryu had already provided the basic concepts of von Neumann architecture and simple circuit designs using triode vacuum tubes. However, even Soryu had never seen detailed blueprints for large-scale integrated circuits. He could write programs but didn't know how compilation worked. This was one area where they had to build knowledge step by step.

"So, there are things even you don't know, huh?"

"I can use computers, but I've never seen the inside of a CPU. If you tried to visualize a design with 10 billion transistors, you'd run out of A4 paper. I can use high-level programming languages, but I've never looked closely at machine language (binary data). Well, the world's first CPU was made with 2,300 transistors, so maybe we can substitute 2,300 vacuum tubes if we design it well. We'll also work on developing transistors in parallel. I'd like to develop an 8-bit CPU within five years."

Plan He: Materials Engineering – Assigned to Yonekura Tomozane

Development of heat-resistant materials and ultra-high-tensile steel.

Plan Ho: Rocket Development – Assigned to Shirotsugu Ratato

Plan Ni: Soccer Education – Assigned to Ōmisaki Taro

Plan To: Information Management – Assigned to Arima Katsumi

Overall Coordination: Takashiro Soryu

Talented individuals Soryu had scouted from Imperial University would join these plans.

"Looks like we've finally gotten started. It's been 18 years since I came here. When I was an angel, 18 years felt like nothing, but fused with a human, it feels much longer."

"Is that how it is? Isn't it painful to live for 18,000 years?"

"Painful? How rude!"

"Come on, there are plenty of stories where protagonists who gain eternal life end up searching for someone to kill them. Don't angels have lifespans?"

"No lifespans. We're basically spiritual beings, so our existence is eternal. But we can be annihilated fighting demons during Armageddon. A few of us were wiped out in the last Armageddon."

"So, annihilation is possible? What's the mechanism behind it?"

"If you take a direct hit from a demon's ultimate attack—like Boom! or Bang!—you might disappear."

"Your vocabulary is seriously lacking."

Soryu decided to observe a class at the Youth Academy.

At the time, Japan's elementary school enrollment rate was 96%, but many of the children gathered in the Space Force were those who had been marked for infanticide or had received no education. These were children whose own parents had deemed them "unwanted."

"It was a time when parents killing their babies was seen as unavoidable... We have to change this situation, no matter what."

During lunch break after the meal, Soryu observed the children. A few of them gathered near him.

"...."

The children silently looked up at Soryu.

"Hello. Are you enjoying your studies?"

"...."

No response...

Then, the homeroom teacher rushed over.

"This is Lieutenant Takashiro. I'm sorry. These children had almost no interaction with others in their hometowns. They rarely spoke even with their parents or siblings, so they're not used to talking."

The teacher urged the children to say "hello," but no one could. They just stared up at Soryu.

"It's okay. Everyone can take their time to adjust. There's no need to rush or worry. You're here because we need you."

Soryu patted the children's heads.

"'Need'...?"

One child murmured.

"Was 'need' too difficult? Big Brother brought you here because he cares about you. So, listen to your teachers and study hard, okay?"

"...Okay."

The children nodded.

"We have to create a world where all children can live with smiles on their faces."

Soryu made a firm vow.

Thank you for reading Chapter 16!

It's the responsibility of adults to create a world where children can live without worries and with smiles on their faces.

But the protagonist isn't omnipotent—can he really achieve this?

I'll continue working hard to bring this story to its conclusion, so if you thought, "This is interesting!" or "I want to read more!" I'd be thrilled if you could bookmark and rate the story!

If you didn't find it interesting, feel free to rate it "★☆☆☆☆"! I'll use it to improve!

Your feedback is incredibly helpful for my writing!

Criticism like "The pacing is slow," "I don't understand," or "This feels derivative" is also very welcome!

I'm a bit worried whether readers unfamiliar with history are enjoying the story, so I'd love to hear your thoughts on that as well!

When my motivation is high, I'll even sacrifice sleep to keep writing!

Thank you for your continued support!
