Imperator: Resurrection of an Empire

Chapter 301: 298 - The Throne

The golden doors of the Imperial Palace opened before them with a groaning creak that echoed like a bell toll over the marble court.

The triumph had ended, but the next act of the day — no less grand — had only just begun.

The Emperor had returned.

Julius ascended the palace steps slowly, his stride measured, not out of weariness, but reverence.

The crowds below still chanted his name, the cheers and cries of joy washing over the Eternal City like a tide of living sound.

Behind him came Serena, dismounted now, her armor catching the sunlight as if she wore a second skin of fire.

Her hand lingered near his — not held, but close — a silent vow between equals.

As they passed through the threshold, the wide imperial doors sealed shut behind them.

The cheers faded.

Silence took their place.

And before them…

The Court of Romanus.

The Emperors Throne room.

~

The Imperial Throne Room was awash in soft, amber light pouring through stained-glass windows of ancient design, casting streaks of crimson, gold, and emerald across the floor.

At the far end of the chamber, beneath a ceiling carved with stories of old — of Romulus and Remus, of the Flame Eternal, and of the Unifying Hand — stood the dais.

And upon that dais, Three thrones awaited.

One of them — Julius's — carved of dark obsidian and white gold, shaped in the form of a conquering eagle, wings flared.

The others, newly raised and polished to mirror the first but more feminine with hints of sea life— was Serena's.

Smaller by only a measure, not in stature but in deference, it bore the etchings of Carthaginian suns and Roman laurels, twined together into a crown of unity.

Serena paused for a moment.

And then, without need for invitation, climbed the steps behind Julius and seated herself beside the man who had offered her a crown not as a token, but as a bonding promise.

The advisors and generals already present in the chamber bowed deeply in sequence as the Emperor and Empress took their places.

"Rise,"

Julius said, his voice calm but absolute.

And rise they did.

~

Miri — Consul and Overseer of the Treasury — was the first to speak.

"Your Majesty,"

she said, her voice as sharp as the ledgers she kept,

"the people have seen your triumph, and the coffers are overflowing with gifts from grateful cities and provinces. The Empire's prosperity is assured in your rule."

Zeff, one of his strongest personal warrier, grinned from beneath his oil-streaked mantle.

"The roads are secured Ceasar, the legion patrols are well ingrained and banditry is all but eradicated in the whole of our territories."

Elheat, silent until now, stepped forward last, his gleaming black armor whispering across the floor as he bowed low.

"Security reports confirm the great walls remain intact. No crossings let alone even attempts from Visigoth to enter our lands."

Julius regarded each of them with calm satisfaction.

"You've done well,"

he said.

"More than well. You've taken a vision — and turned it into living reality."

His gaze swept over all of them.

"You built this moment. This triumph. I merely walked the road."

Then his eyes returned to Miri, Zeff, and Elheat in turn.

"Thank you."

It was a simple phrase.

But from an Emperor, it might as well have been thunder from the gods.

The chamber bowed again — not out of duty.

But out of pride.

~

Julius leaned back slightly in his throne as Serena adjusted herself beside him.

The pair looked utterly natural now — as if this had always been the image of rule: not one throne, but three, though one remained empty.

Her gaze flicked across the chamber, sharp as any sword.

"I see our dear advisors have been preparing for more than just a parade,"

she said, tone amused.

Zeff coughed sheepishly.

"Well... we thought it best to assume she wouldn't be Empress by rumour alone."

Serena smirked.

"Smart of you. One throne would have caused a scandal — or worse, have the emperor be forced to serve as my throne."

A ripple of laughter ran through the hall — nervous but genuine.

Julius reached out, brushing his fingers across hers.

"You were always meant to sit beside me,"

he said, not for the chamber, but for her.

And in that moment, Serena — conqueror, diplomat, noble of two nations — softened, just slightly.

"This isn't the end, Julius,"

she whispered, barely audible.

"You know that, don't you?"

He nodded slowly.

"No. It's only the calm before the storm."

~

From the side doors, a steward entered swiftly and bowed.

"A courier from the west, sire. Eyes from the border report activity along Francian trade routes — armored companies moving south their destination is unknown, but its feared they are targeting Germania."

The room quieted.

Julius did not need to speak.

Serena did instead.

"Then we have our answer. They know we're coming for her. They're simply wondering when, and trying to build a buffer to delay our arrival."

Julius stood slowly, his gaze sweeping across the faces of his council.

"We will let them wonder a little longer,"

He said, descending the throne stairs with measured steps.

"But only a little."

He paused, looking to his commanders.

"Summon the war council for an emergency session tommorow. I want every possible theatre of war mapped out. And send word to the Grand Barracks — the Legions shall begin mobilization by week's end."

The advisors present dipped their heads in simple acknowledgement, then once the messenger left the room, the tone settled down if only a tad.

Then there was a chuckle that built until the emperor seated before them, his closest friends and allies started to laugh like a maniac.

"SIre?"

Elheat the seasoned veteran raised his voice first which broke Julius's laughter.

Wiping a single tear from his eyes Julius waved lightly.

"No worries my friends, I was just struck with just how foolish the franc really are, not only do they provoke our power, but now they also try to taunt us?"

"Do you think we suspect them of being the culprits behind her highness's capture?"

Zeff's voice which had begun to deepen further as he grew older week after week sounded out.

"Heh, a wise man would know everyone would be a suspect, but given their actions its likely their a nation of idiots."

"A true war at last, be a good test for the lads! enough of this simulation training they need the chance to wet their blades."

Elheats near murderous intent caused Serena to shiver that such a man acted almost unhinged at the lack of real combat he'd been witness to.

"No worries on that front Elheat! Haddin and his seasoned legions should have returned yes? They will be among those we'll inform before the majority of our army will march out to meet them, and then with the full force of the Romanus Empire we will scour the entire Francian Kingdom as we look for our missing Empress."

"Sigh, such true love, it's almost like a story."

"Heh. Dont you dare go righting a romance novel about me Miri!"

"*giggle* I wouldn't dare your majesty. Just getting to witness the story is enough for any woman to swoon."

The rest of the session was played out like a gathering of friends as the advisoral court did not discuss business but rather were jovial and just interacted like friends who had not come together in a while.
