Chapter 251: 249
Home.
Following the act of a proper ruler as he was greeted by his subjected both within Nova Carthago and then The Eternal City itself, Julius's return was finally complete he was back to his palace.
When he exited from the carriage and started to climb the stone steps towards the palace entrance the crowd which had greet his entry to the city was now formed a the gates to the palace cheers of joy still reverberating through the air as they watched their king climbing to the heavens.
Ahead of him Julius could see rows upon rows of people waiting to also greet him, from palatial staff, to his advisors, generals, praetorian guads, and then lastly and those nearest to where he was heading, his vassals/retainers.
Zeff and Miri were among the leaders there, Zeff was pleased to see Julius return meanwhile Miri was beyond pleased for with his return her workload should lessen if only a little... right?
Her reason for wanting to lessen the load was apparent to Julius who at first almost stumbled on his steps, she was pregnant either that or the poor young woman had fallen to the vice of ample food within the kingdom mixed with poor exercise as a result of all her office work.
Julius meanwhile after getting over the initial shock could only crack a smile and laugh a bit in his head at the number of his retainers increasing yet again.
"We greet your Majesty!"
When he reached their level everyone assembled at the entrance spoke out almost as one, before taking a knee and bowing their heads.
Julius looked over the lines of his loyalists.
A few familiar faces were missing from the bunch but that was to be expected since Haddin, Bente and around half the veteran commanders were still serving in Greecia commanding over the first and second legions.
But even as he was overjoyed at the reunion with all his friends and those who formed his inner circle Julius couldn't help but keep a scowl on his face.
"Thank you everyone for your welcome, please return to work, Zeff, Miri, Elheat, Serena, ... ... please stay we need to discuss some things first."
The majority of those assembled did one last bow before getting up and returning to their duties while those whose names had been called out followed after the King and his Kingsguard into the throne room.
Each of them took their seats while the guards took up posts around the room.
"Welcome back your Majesty, congratulations on your successful war on the Greecian peninsula."
"Hmm..."
"And don't worry sir, we've got ever resource possible looking into Milady's disappearance and we wont stop for anything until she is found."
Elheat the old general was first to speak up, first to congratulate but that only deepened my scowl up he followed up with news I actually wanted.
"Thank you, Elheat this war showed me how weak Romanus truly is when our enemies are willing to go to any lengths in order to defeat us."
"It's despicable to target a leader like this, and of royal blood no less have they no honor?"
Next up was Miri but her words meant little to the rest of us in the room, she had never been and probably would never have to bear witness to the horror of man and what lengths we'd go to in order to survive or cause the fall of others.
Zeff seated next to her grabbed her hand before lightly shaking his head to get her line of speech to end.
"Now we need to get down to business, the war in Greecia against the holdouts of the Allied forces was progressing well before I left, by now it's possible the war is in its final stages already but even when it ends we'll need to leave at least the first if not both the first and second legions to police and occupy the area to prevent and further uprisings and allow the Spartan Kingship to assuming the role as the true occupier of the regions."
"Yes, that's what we saw from the reports as well, to think they had already resorted to throwing the lives of there people away all for the sake of their pride..."
"Well three of the nations have surrendered and their people have accepted this, only those who ran from us and then the Athenians who were the only ones to still retain completely unconquered territory were still in the fight, but the Athenian senate is sure to try making their people fight to the death."
...
...
"Now then as for the rest of the continent... well as you all are probably aware the Visigoth's to our North are aggressively expanding through military conquest, their war against the Herald Kingdom has finished with their total victory and with most of their armies in the region for the sake of the war it's not unlikely that they would try to expand even further, and in doing so cut off our own land routes to the Eastern regions through any means other than by sea."
"... I see so Heralds time has come just like Lunan... that means if they wanted to block us from the east only the Antiochia States, or that region calling themselves The Ancient State remained before those despicable Goth's could cut the continent in two?"
"That is correct Elheat, but it doesn't stop there... Other nations are also making their moves as well, following the movements of the volunteer Mercenary army we recruited the Germanians have launched an invasion of the People's State of Achae. Further north it seems the Celtica Tribal union has found themselves caught between the Brittanians and Francian who are using the Celtica territory as a battleground while offering up only token resistance against these major powers. And lastly the Slavic Union has started to make moves to consolidate the north since Brittania's attentions have been drawn south. At this point almost the entire world as we know it is involved in some war or another."
"The time of great strife is certainly upon us."
"Thank goodness we have your majesty to lead us!"
