Chapter 21: Space mission
Today was Friday, the weekend.
It was also the day a NASA representative came to give a lecture to the students during science class. In the classroom, the science teacher, Professor Hubert, was introducing the guest.
"I have something special for you today."
"My dear friend and former roommate is here."
"He came from the Johnson Space Center in Houston to talk to us about the space program."
"Yes, I know what you're thinking."
"Those guys were roommates."
"How could one of them become a fancy scientist at NASA?"
"And the other teaches science to first-year high school students at a public school."
Professor Hubert had a sad look on his face when he said the last part, and that's when a hand went up.
Alex, who had been quietly observing everything, had thought the same thing, but he wasn't going to ask.
Everyone looked at Sheldon, who had his hand raised.
"Yes, Sheldon?" Professor Hubert said.
"I was thinking that." Sheldon said, while Professor Hubert made a face like he'd eaten something sour, but as a teacher, he was patient and responded sarcastically with a smile.
"Thank you."
To defuse the awkwardness, Professor Hubert decided to call his friend to begin the talk.
"Alright, let's give a warm welcome to my good friend, Dr. Ronald Hodges."
At that moment, the short, chubby man stepped forward—it was his turn to speak.
"Hello, kids. I'm happy to be here."
"And Hubert, the answer to your question is: one of those roommates was busy studying, while the other was chasing high school girls."
Professor Hubert looked a bit embarrassed and could only laugh it off as a joke.
"Just to clarify, they were all over 18."
After saying that, Professor Hubert stepped aside.
"More or less…" Dr. Ronald said quietly, but everyone heard it.
Everyone in the classroom made a "what?" face. Alex just watched with amusement, present and watching through a screen with two different emotions.
"Now I think it would be fun to talk about what NASA plans to do beyond the space shuttle."
Dr. Ronald began speaking to grab everyone's attention, walking toward a board titled: PLANETARY MISSION EVOLUTION.
"Things like the first manned mission to Mars."
At that moment, in the back, Dr. Ronald noticed someone raising their hand and turned his attention.
Looking back, Alex saw it was Georgie Jr.
"Have you seen the movie Aliens?" Georgie asked.
Dr. Ronald didn't understand the question, but still answered.
"I have!"
"Did you like it?" Georgie asked.
Dr. Ronald was even more confused, wondering where this kid was going with it, looking to his friend Hubert for help.
But Hubert just tilted his head with a smile, not knowing what to do, and Ronald awkwardly replied.
"Sure, I liked it."
"Me too."
Dr. Ronald nodded after hearing that. As if reaching a conclusion, he asked:
"Football player, right?"
Georgie nodded and replied with a smile.
"Yes, sir."
Dr. Ronald rolled his eyes while laughing. To him, it all made sense, but he had to get back to the topic he came to talk about.
"Now, of course, before we prepare to explore the Solar System, we have a small problem to overcome."
"One of the most important is that every time we launch, it costs taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars."
At that moment, Sheldon raised his hand again, interrupting Dr. Ronald once more.
Alex, who was near Sheldon, saw Professor Hubert lower his head in embarrassment.
Dr. Ronald just gestured with his hand.
"Yes?"
After getting approval, Sheldon opened his mouth to speak.
"If you want to save money, why not land the booster rockets instead of letting them fall into the ocean?"
Dr. Ronald found the child's question amusing, but with years of experience, he thought it was impossible, so he decided to give a direct answer.
"It's a good idea, but it's not technically possible."
"Why not?" Sheldon asked before Ronald could continue.
Dr. Ronald found the question very difficult. After thinking for a moment, he said:
"Well, it's hard to explain. The calculations are quite complicated. And…"
"Maybe I can help." Sheldon interrupted.
To him, a genius with an IQ of 187, it didn't seem that hard to solve.
Alex, who was watching everything, had a smile on his face. Maybe even he hadn't noticed it.

Author's Note
To keep you updated — it must be annoying to read only one chapter.
Many things have been happening to me lately, and I haven't been able to write this novel.
I have difficulty creating dialogue in a novel.
I hope you'll be patient — I'm studying to improve this.
